GI.biz Op-Ed: Titanfall 2 a "commercial failure," "a victim of chest-beating pride."

Didn't everyone blame the lack of the first games success on console exclusivity? More platforms same results? Honestly this game needed to come out 2 months ago.

Weren't most of Titanfalls sales once the price went down a bit? Sure it had a good launch but it was a new Shooter IP that had average reviews due to lacking SP(or whatever) during times where the new gen machine were strived for games.
I don't know it might have been a big launch but it was around spring/early summer.
I'm sure with good discounts and some promotion Titanfall 2 could do well in the holidays.

In terms of commercial failure unless we know how much was invested - we can't really speculate on the numbers. I'm sure a lot of people might look at Titanfalls overall sales but the games could be bought for $5 on PC in less than 6 months of launch. I don't know where the expectations of Titanfall being able to rival franchises with dedicated fans came from - the launch date still makes sense for me unless they really sank a lot of money into the game. Simply put if your first game sold at a lower price but you were happy with this model releasing the second game before the holidays - discounting it 50% might be a more financially viable strategy.

Given the state of the multiplayer, it should have come out next March or April. They had NO time to strip back the multiplayer to the former perfection of Titanfall 1.

The game looks the most interesting to me compared to BF1 and IW. I just won't be picking it up until later this holiday season when I get more funds.

The MP was fine from what I played from the beta, but that's the problem. It plays like COD with Mechs. We already get one of those every year, no one wants another. So in order for this game to stand out it needed something more. A better engine for starters that would have really pushed the visuals would have helped. Also the timing is completely off. This is still a relatively new franchise, it's not going to be able to compete directly with Call of Duty or Battlefield to put it so close to them is absolutely ridiculous. It needed to come out either way before or way after.

The biggest killer for this game was the release date.

I maintain that the beta and the release date killed this game.

After the feedback from the first beta weekend they should've pushed release and fixed the stuff they got feedback on.
They would've gotten some positive response from players because they'd've shown they were listening to the audience' and they would've gotten out of the Battlefield & CoD window.

Personally not a fan of the MP.

I realize I enjoy more team focused games like overwatch or R6 over just run around and get the kills.

SP was fantastic though, and if another titanfall game does happen, the SP will be my reason to pick it up.

Also, from commercials and advertising it is clear EA put their focus on Battlefield. I still see commercials for it whenever I go on twitch, I haven't even seen a single titanfall ad or commercial.

I just hope Respawn doesn't give up on this game. They can still carve out an audience if they continue to improve it. It's a shame that egos got in the way.

So now that Titanfall 2 did well in November do we still think it's a commercial failure or the franchise now saved?

Well they halved the price after a few weeks on the market. Chart position doesn't always equal success

They did the same with Titanfall - that's why I outlined that the launch date actually might make sense for them and people were overreacting. Simply put there were heavy discounts for the original game and that model might have played a role here.

That's true, but this definitely seems like a move to bring more people in, rather about how much it's going to make, I think.

Now that it's coming out on ps4 , it makes sense to expand the audience as much as they can. I think tf3 is when we will see if it really was a failure.

But bringing people in doesn't mean a ton if you aren't selling a season pass or have aggressive micro transactions. Totanfall 3 likely isn't coming out anytime soon so if that was their goal that's kind of a waste

We don't actually know how well it did though. Everything below Pokemon moon could be lackluster for all we know. We need numbers for context.

How well did it do? It was discounted too...

Not really. Titanfall 1 did almost a million opening month and the second month was the 360 launch which also did well. They didn't drop the price $30 that fast. They put it on sale after it already died for the most part

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
The beta and release date worked against it, but the game had good word of mouth especially for the campaign.

In terms of the overall package with a good campaign and MP, it might be the best FPS this year.

A global discount of 50% across the board.

It'll need to sell 5x more than what it did in October for me (personally) to consider it successful.

We actually know that it was the top three games that underperformed compared to past years. Titanfall generated more money than NBA 2K17, Madden NFL 17, Watch Dogs 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and FIFA 17 during November. I think people aren't being realistic about it's performance and how heavy discounts for a newly released game like TF2 might actually be a net positive long term. Especially in a month where people are looking for "deals" in the end I think this effort worked out better for Titanfall than a lot of people anticipated.

Hopefully the Star Wars game they are working on is great and the studio isn't impacted too much from TF2 launch.

EA needs to look at themselves here.

Nah, not at all. Player count on PS4 & X1 are still abysmally low, despite the game being picked up after a heavy global 50% discount in its first 30 days on the market.

Like, if TF2 hadn't picked up as much as it didn't even after such an aggressive price slashing, then TF2 would've been absolutely just dead. The only way the long-term argument works is if those players are going in & playing the game online long enough to purchase microtransactions. Judging by the online player counts, which haven't gone up, that means most people are picking it up, playing the lauded campaign (which is probably why they're picking it up in the first place), finishing it then putting it down.
