Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Characters and Stages Roster Discussion Thread

Just for fun to keep the thread going in this time of no news, what kind of crossover parings could you see really work for hypothetical story purposes (story mode cutscene, arcade ending, etc)?

Dante and Ghost Rider going demon hunting.
She-Hulk and Phoenix Wright forming a joint layer firm before plot ensues.

-Cloak and Dagger would work like a Jojo's character stand.

That doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Seems like picking the mechanic first and then trying to find a character to fit it.

If anything, it makes more sense for Dagger to be the primary fighter and have Cloak pop in from nowhere for things like a teleport movement ability, super attacks that involve both characters, and maybe as part of her guard animation. Having him be some kind of summonable fighter a la the Stands doesn't really work well for me.

Niitsuma is an odd one, because while he and his team came up with some great, out-there gameplay twists for some characters, and made PHOENIX WRIGHT work, he turns right around and can't figure out how to make Blade play mechanically different from Deadpool or Dante. His thought process doesn't always make sense.

It's important to remember that the MvC team is really big on gameplay diversity, with each fighter belonging to one of four broad archetypes. It's not that Niitsuma can't personally figure out a way to make Blade different from Deadpool or Dante (or Vergil) -- it's that all of those characters are sword-based speed types, and so it makes more sense to go with a completely unique character with an unrepresented fighting style. Blade is cool, but it's easy to see why Doctor Strange, Rocket Raccoon, Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Nova, and Hawkeye made the cut for UMvC3 over him.

Plus, Niitsuma isn't Sakurai. He doesn't personally decide on each character and how they play.

I'm sure these thoughts are just first impression ideas. The design process is always iterative and the character changes significantly from conception. These were cut for what are seemingly dumb reasons--but when you have a choice of thousands of potential characters, there needs to be a way to pare the list down.

Niitsuma Tweeted some more characters who were shot down for MvC3:

Blade
Spider-Woman
Psylocke
Spiral
Cloak & Dagger
Multiple Man

Man Spiral was considered for MvC3? Such a shame she didn't make it, though I feel like she would have to be overhauled a lot. MvC2 Spiral doesn't really work with how Spiral is in the comics.

The real question is if MODOK will return.

I think he's one of the ones who are potentially on the chopping block, but with Doom, Skrull, Magneto and Sentinel gone, he might stick around solely to keep the villain count up a little. He's also really unique from a gameplay standpoint.
And, being used by Marvel as a sort of silly mascot for some of their non-comic media (he is basically the star of their Adult Swim-esque "What the?!" series on Youtube), and Marvel seems to like pushing him in just about all the games since MvC3 originally, so I think his chances are pretty good to come back.

Modock ain't going nowhere. The've set up AIM in the MCU for too long

So can we take it for fact as akuma is going to be in this game? They say the vs legacy will not be forgotten. If anyone is MR VS and the father of this shit, its akuma

I'm honestly hoping he's a no-show.

In other news with all the Breath of Fire talk in this thread I went and downloaded Breath of Fire IV on PSN (why the eff is BoF3 not up on PS1 Classics?). Now I too can be a fan of a series that will never see the light of day again.

He's likely, but I don't think it's a definite he makes base roster. After all, the reason Akuma ended up in COTA was due to an in-joke among the staff that he was technically an "X" man too, thanks to his first appearance being in SSF2X (Super Turbo).

Maybe they could save him along with Wolverine for DLC, in order to keep the joke-I mean, legacy intact.

Akuma's chances are high for returning, though it's not impossible for him to be left out. He didn't make a playable appearance in TvC--though admittedly, that's not Marvel, it's still a versus title.

Where did you hear that?

It's an oft-repeated bit of trivia about Children of the Atom. It's hard to definitively prove that was the motivation behind Akuma's inclusion in the game since we're not exactly swimming in developer interviews from 1994, but it makes a lot of sense.

All I can find is this:
Wikipedia said:
Capcom's contract with Marvel stipulated that Capcom include a character from the Street Fighter franchise in the game, so the developers included Akuma as a secret character.

I always just assumed Akuma was chosen because he was new and incredibly popular in 1994.

MODOK or Akuma?

Akuma wasn't in MvC1 regardless of Ryu's Akuma transformation (not Evil Ryu because he just literally became Akuma in Ryu Sprite).

From really bad google translation
-Blade too similar to Dante
-Spider-woman's flight and venom blasts might have made her too similar to Trish
-Cloak and Dagger would work like a Jojo's character stand.
-Thai Rock (Psylocke?): Something about Hiryu being enough ninja-type characters?
-Multiple Man: some joke about how it would lessen workload
-Nothing about the Spiral one seems like a reason for her absence?
-Squirrel Girl was also mentioned as a alternate choice instead of Rocket Raccoon,
-Doctor Strange was pushed heavily into inclusion by Marvel
-Nova was a request specifically from Marvel.
(might have been because Nova was originally supposed to be in GOTG1 before being cut to make Star Lord the only Earthling? I think that's right.)
-Ghost Rider was a very popular choice. And maybe something about the Motorcycle aspect being tricky

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yeah, but I doubt they're going to actually put a character as ridiculous-looking as M.O.D.O.K. in the MCU... right?

Eh, I mean vision is in the MCU and I have always thought Vision looks stupid. You could probably make the modock concept look a lot more scary and gross. And even then the MCU isn't afraid to embrace stupidity. Remember The guardians are a thing.

I was playing mvc2 in the last couple days and man, Captain Commando its so fun to look and play as. I really wish he is in this game.

Batsu
Hayato
Captain Commando
Jin Saotome

Those would be so great choices of characters in my opinion.

I'd be happy if they all got in. That's four reps, from four different series.

I guess this is reinforcing how good I thought the MvC3 roster was on the Capcom side, because I never really cared for any of those.

how much was UMvC3 going to be again? or is on PSN I guess (im waiting for steam)

25 or 30? for some reason I want to say 25 but 30 is more likely.

I think what most people like about the mvc series its how crazy it is. And those characters are stupidly crazy. Well, maybe not Batsu, but he was great in TvC.

$25 for the digital version, $30 for the physical version that's coming in March.

Not being in the movies probably hurt her chances. She was so good in the crossover games at the start of the series though!
Considering that Marvel isn't really big on promoting the Fox films, I doubt that they were criteria for inclusion in (U)MvC3.

Also, if you don't know who Captain Marvel is, check out The Mighty Captain Marvel #0. It's a pretty good primer for Carol (& a nice start towards fixing Carol after Bendis did her dirty in Civil War II).

I love MODOK, have done since the 80s where his ridiculous design really stood out to me.
I hope he makes it back in, and I really hope he makes in into the MCU, and not some weird concept design similar in name only like Zola, I want the giant floating sinister head!

I was scared of MODOK when I first saw him.

I actually felt sorry for him when I saw what happened to him in a classic Cap issue.

His return would be perfectly fine with me.

Capcom's usually pretty good about their physical releases of digital-first games as of late (DMC4:SE aside), so there's reason to be hopeful.
Not even current gen Capcom would be dumb enough to do a code in box release for a 5-6 year old game that'll already have been out for a few months on current gen platforms.

It'll definitely be on disc.

Modok falls into a weird spot for me

I don't like the chacter or his design at all, I hate using him and fighting against him in umvc3

BUT

He's super unique design wise and has a very unique move set compared to the rest of the mvc franchise characters.

I'm not rooting for him to be back in any capacity, but I see his value on the roster.

I do wonder if MODOK was a character that Marvel wanted to be included in MVC3's roster, or it was Capcom who pushed for that Jack Kirby creation to be added.

IIRC, Capcom was looking to implement a uniquely functioning Marvel character, to which someone from Marvel suggested MODOK (Forgot the guy's name, but he was defintely someone prominent during MvC3's promotion at events)

Niitsuma said that M.O.D.O.K. was suggested by Marvel after the team wanted to include someone unconventional/nonhumanoid.

Man, I really would like to see how Juggernaut would look in the current graphics. He was so ridiculously huge and awesome looking in the old games. I think he'd look great here. Guess we'll see if DLC will allow him to make the roster someday.

I'm glad. He's the best abomination that Kirby created, he's so endearingly ugly--kinda like male poodles.

Juggs has very little chance, even as DLC, but I get what you're saying. He'd look pretty friggen cool.

They could replace him with Rhino, or maybe Luke Cage. Though, Luke has more potential than being a Juggs clone though.

Yeah, I could see Cage being a bit similar to Colossus, though not as slow. He could even have an armor power-up hyper to show off his trademark Power Man durability.

So Psylocke was considered after all... so sad hahah. I kept some hope even if she appeared on the DoFP stage's poster.

So, she should be top priority now, right? Right?
