Theresa May will put plans to pull out of the European Court of Human Rights (EHCR) at the heart of her campaign for the 2020 general election campaign, after ministers conceded that reform plans have been delayed by Brexit.

The Prime Minister is understood to be backing plans to “lift and shift” human rights enshrined in the European Convention and write them into UK law.

Mrs May’s plans go further than those drawn up by her predecessor David Cameron because they will give the Supreme Court the final say over how the rights are applied.

However, sources said she has decided that she cannot start that fight with the prospect of negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union set to dominate Parliament over the next few years.

A senior Government source said: “We would have been looking at having a huge row with a Parliament to get through the Cameron plan and we might even have failed.

“A clean break is by far the best option and, if we put it in the manifesto, even those Tory MPs who are squeamish about the idea will have to get behind it.

“A manifesto pledge also means the Lords will have to let it through eventually. All the signs are that the Prime Minister is up for this.”

Britain to be like Belarus in the "European countries not signing up to the ECHR" league table if this comes to pass. Even Russia is a signatory. I'm definitely not comfortable with the idea of removing an impartial layer of protection for citizens' rights.

The worrying thing is everyone will look at brexit as an example of basically nothing going wrong as the effects of brexit potentially won't have even kicked in yet

I'd actually thought she'd backed down on that prior to putting her name forward as a candidate for prime minister. While I'm not surprised that she'd want to do it - the ECHR has long been a target of hers - I am surprised that it's suddenly back on the table.

Unfortunately, the Conservatives could announce that strangling nurses is now official party policy and still expect a large majority in the next parliament. Hyperbole, sure, but not to the point that I'd like it to be.

Well it's easier to make "adjustments" if there is no comparison to the EHCR but only the UK law

It's a shame but i think there won't be many labour party wins all over europe in the next 5-10 years.

If it's the UK, Germany or France or other EU countries most of them are a disaster at the moment
