Her fault for lipsyncing some parts.

Their fault for not fixing her ear peice she could hear herself ( that's why some parts there was nothing and she did not sing because she would sound like a dying goat )
Hmmm. I guess we may never know what really happened here. People seem too quick to throw Mariah under the bus because of her 'Diva' persona but we don't know the full story.

Why do people think she was trying to lip sync? I don't hear any vocals except for the one high pitched part, and her mic is working. That's not how people lip sync.

The primary lip sync vocal track was missing.

For the second song they played it straight off of the album/CD.

They played the wrong track, without the vocals, which is what caused the issue, and yes when you lip sync the mic still works for audience interaction.

All the people bitching about lip sync, did you even watch? The first song her monitor wasn't working, so for the second one they used the version with vocals on it so there would at least be a song. She even says "this next song is the album version" before it starts, and then makes no attempt to convince anyone she's really singing.

Thats a shame

Its not like she cant sing... I know a ton of event planners opt for this option over letting them do it for real but still

I suppose after seeing how trashed she was they opted to just have it as a lip sync performance?

Id almost rather see this trend just die completely

If it doesnt make sense to have then do a live real performance then dont do it at all or change the venue and scope

How can someone earn millions of dollars for lipsyncing...?! Ill never understand that... she def is no "iconic popstar" if she just lipsyncs like everybody else..

Wow. Here is a thought. Just sing, surely you know the words, right? It might not be as good as singing in a studio, but don't just stand there looking confused at your own song.

Heh, a lot of people would be devastated when they found out how often lip syncing is used in public events such as this one.

This is what I was thinking after going through a lot of this thread. Do people really think Katy Perry, Beyonce, etc. are up there dancing their asses off while still managing to sing perfectly? I'm not saying they always lip sync but if they're doing a dance number you can pretty much bank on it.

ITT: Nobody really understands how live sound monitoring or sound reinforcement works whatsoever.

I have a very good understanding. She was still going to fake many of the notes (as evidenced by their appearance in the backing tracks). Scummy and unprofessional. Not sure why so much of modern popular music is faked and lip-synced when I can see smaller artists in smaller venues pull way more challenging shit off without faking (and they make way less money).

Or harmonize.

I have had my time as an AV tech...
I feel bad for the techs who were in charge of the monitors... They will be (were) ripped to shreds from both sides.

Shit happens, even tested tech breaks down/ malfunctions.

She should have asked to stop the music immediately and gone A Capella like a Boss, or asked for new monitors, Seacrest could have explained later that due to ambiant sound level you have to be able to hear yourself.

I know lots of pop artists do it, but I can't believe it's still a thing post-Milli Vanilli. It's like wrestling, the fans just accept the hokiness of it.

The Milli Vanilli thing was a big deal because they NEVER sang. Ever. They weren't the singers on the album. They just started to get exposed when their lip sync track got fucked up in a live performance.

Only the high pitched part was to be lipsynced, the rest was supposed to be live. But since she couldn't hear herself after her ear peice died she decided to remain quiest than to try to sing over thousands of people screeming and have her next headline in the news "Matiah can't sing anymore"

Oh my, oh no...

How dare his POP (boooo hiss gag) star, one of the most talented pop vocalists of all time, with over 13 number 1 hits, countless awards, and a voice that literally gets studied at the graduate level...

How DARE she attempt to lip sync some of her classics now that she's in her late 40s?

Such a phony...

the monitors were clearly working, if she is indeed a singer, she could have just sang the damn song. it makes me wonder if there were other factors at work. maybe she was under contract that stipulated only lip syncing and no real singing, and that if she sang she would have broken it.

then again that's still a huge bs situation. a pop singer contracted to specifically NOT SING. lol. no wonder the music industry is crap.

Tina Turner was still blowing the roof off places back in 2009 in her 70s. No excuses. She should get a vocal coach.

i like how the defense here is the singer made no attempt to convince anyone that she's singing. that's kind of the point lol.

Auto-tune broked.

I find it hard to believe she's been singing for decades and doesn't know how to get over "monitors not working" and other technical issues that pop up.

Guess that's the difference between an artist and a performer. Artist would take the monitor out and do their best to sing accurately, performer just flounders on stage walking around like a drunk.

The music from the stage speakers bounces off the buildings and makes it impossible to have proper timing. That's the whole point of the monitor.

I don't understand what's going on....

in the first track she just refused to sing... anyone knows why?

in the 2nd one she just didn't care.. or what the hell happened?
