Nintendo Switch Joy-Con $80, Pro Controller $70

Wait, so you guys are saying the grip included with the system isnt able to charge your Joycons? It's just an empty shell that you cant plug anything into?

I promised this thing to my kid as I refused to buy the WiiU and now I'm gagging a little. I envisioned having the neighborhood munchkins over for some local multiplayer and thought I'd pick up a few extra controllers........yeah, not so much. They can fuck right off with that pricing structure.

I'm just catching up on stuff this morning, but what technology is even in the pro controller to warrant that price?

It's wireless, has the HD Rumble in it, accelerometer and gyroscope, NFC, and the IR Camera.

Not saying that justifies the price, but it's basically two JoyCons permanently welded together. Someone else please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

I think the 2-pack of Joy-Cons for $80 is fair but $70 for the Pro Controller is ridiculous.

That's what i thought too but then realised Joy-con grips and wriststrap shells are sold separately (Wii-remote covers are included ffs). And you're going to need a separate charger (or even Switch) to get more than 2 Joy-cons ready for a session.

They supposedly learned from WiiU/3ds pricing but here we are. Console is priced the same as WiiU basic and higher than 3ds, handheld game prices are out (also 60$ for ARMS? Really?!), peripherals are the most expensive they've ever been (and we all know Nintendo controllers never go down in price).

I'll wait it out for a year. Hopefully they'll change things or reduce prices (and hopefully cancel the online subscription).

Edit: Ok, so it seems Joy-cons do come with the wrist straps. The presentation said that different coloured straps will be sold separately so I assumed the worst (no included charger though).

Havent even thought about this. I hope we will get some reviews befor the switch lounches. There is still so much stuff we dont know.

Nintendo knows that them small ass controllers are gonna get misplaced and lost. That's why they selling left and right ones separately as an option. lol. $50 though? Ouch
The Neon Switch only comes with one of each color. What if you want a fully blue or red console? That's the actual reason they're selling them separately. Or, y'know, if one breaks cause you didn't wear a wrist strap and wound up throwing it into your TV screen.

The prices are ridiculous IMO but c'mon dude.

Edit: why the hell are people saying handheld games are out. For one thing they've barely announced any games at all and for another the launch title Snipperclips is 100% a low budget handheld-esque title.

Where did you see that it was sold separately? It's showing on the box of 2 Joy-cons

Quick Edt: the Straps, not the grip -- I know about that

I assume wiiU pros and other old controllers wont be usuable

I have to imagine youll be able to use the gamecube adapter for smash though

The one positive side to all this at the very least is for the switch you can get a controller replacement unlike the Wii U where finding a second Gamepad was pretty much next to impossible. So if it gets broken you might as well toss the entire system into the garbage because it wont function without it.

Listen, maybe if you only want to feel 2 ice cubes, then it could be cheaper, but personally, I want to differentiate between up to 3 ice cubes. Sorry you don't see the value in that.

Ugh. And the pro controller is basically mandatory for me because the Joy-cons + grip look uncomfortable as fuck.

$370 for a console with only Zelda at launch and an online fee. Not a good look.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Weren't Wiimotes $40 at Wii's launch?

Really just wondering how many games will support the pro controller. Noticed them specifically name check it during splatoon 2 last night, but nothing else. Not sure if it's worth picking up yet. Does anyone know if it works with zelda?

It'll work with pretty much everything (save for titles like 1 2 Switch).

More likely thr grip itself will be something you gotta keep charged/batteried up - unless its wired only....

I would guess that it'll work with anything that doesn't require motion controls.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I still can't wrap my head around the fact that this:

by itself, is $50. What the fuck. It's utter lunacy.

WTF Nintendo?? $10 price difference from the Pro controller to the DS4/XB1 controller? Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. I want to want this so bad but god damn they are making it hard.

Initially $40, and to add an analog stick and two more buttons to it cost an additional $20.

Now take into account that the JoyCon is both smaller, and includes more impressive (relative term) technology, for $10 more that the Wii Remote alone.

So it's actually $10 less than the equivalent Wii Remote and Nunchuck combo, while having more complex technology inside.

Again, not saying it's an ideal price, but some of the reactions in this thread are a little crazy. $80 for two is a hard pill to swallow indeed but that's also the price of two Wii Remotes but with better tech inside and analog sticks standard.

I don't think you'll ever find me saying that considering all of the technology in the Joy Cons that their price is unreasonable. But what I'm going to be saying a lot is that I think that in light of that price all of that technology is a mistake.

I agree to be honest. I think the HD Rumble is really cool, and I'm excited to se it used (I like the idea of the Rabbids or, hopefully, Pikmin "infesting" the controllers) but the IR camera, IMO, is utterly worthless. It's really cool technology for sure but I can't imagine any practical gameplay uses for it outside of minigames, and I'm all but positive 3rd party devs will almost never use it, and Nintendo themselves didn't even demo any uses for it. Complete waste of tech that will jack up the price and never be used. If they had gotten rid of that and shaved off an additional $10 from the price that would have been really nice. I think it's the first time I've ever seen Nintendo introduce new controller tech that I've immediately been like "What's the benefit of this and how will they even use it?"

And to add to my previous point, I cannot believe that Nunchucks are still $20. An analog stick, two buttons, and an accelerometer in a plastic shell for $20. They should have dropped to $10 a long, LONG time ago considering they came out ten years ago.

I'd argue that anyone expecting the "technology" inside the joycons to justify the price tag to the public at large is certainly in for a shock. It doesn't matter how fancy the technology is when, for the most part, it is functionally just a very small gamepad that will be uncomfortably cramped for many people. It's also not a very compelling argument to positively compare the tech to the wiimote given that the wiimote is a 10 year old piece of hardware.

For example, A mom or dad looking to buy something for their kid sees what looks like a little piece of plastic for $50 and nope'ing the fuck out (especially if they are in a video game aisle and see that the PS4 or Xbone controllers are cheaper) is probably more likely than that same parent considering the specific technological innovations in said piece of plastic and considering it a reasonable purchase.

didn't the wii u have a front facing camera for video chatting? pretty sure that thing never got used thanks to their terrible online system.

ps4 controller is 60 for a lot of features nintendo is advertising.

Wii U pro controller may as well not have rumble. It's the shittest rumble implementation ever. So weak/

And the Gamepad feels like it's going to rumble out of my hands. It's like a damn earthquake.

Can't wait to feel the HD rumble, even if it's an unnecessary upgrade for the controller over Wii U's controllers.

After getting the Pro (normal) controller you are in PS4 Pro price range... and it comes with a normal controller. The Switch might be the worst system reveal I have ever seen.

And when you factor in that DS4/XB1 controllers routinely get discounted to $35-40, and Nintendo historically keeps its accessory and game prices close to MSRP for much of their lives...

It was crazy working at Best Buy when the Wii came out and having to explain all the various controllers/parts for the Wii. This is the same thing, just more expensive.

In a year or two no one will care.

...A lot of the features Nintendo is advertising in a single Joy-con.

I think part of the problem for me, and I'm sure others, is that it's a real hard sell to even consider a single joycon as a complete, individual controller package due to size and just overall button sparseness. Especially given that the grip with a pair of joycons hooked in does actually look like a proper controller. A single joycon looks like half a controller, and optics certainly matter.

At first I didn't think a console-only iteration of the Switch without handheld capabilities seemed like a viable idea, but I'm at the point where I wish they'd just make that already. Give me my Tegra box with a pro controller for $150-$200 and I'd get it in a heartbeat. The joy-cons continue to look cool as fuck, but I'm not sure how worth it they are.

I think that's definitely the disconnect. There's a psychological response that it seems like half a control even though it's technologically closer to a next-gen Wii Remote.
