A E S T H E T I C

monolith soft should hire me as character designer, i could supply them with #iconic designs all day

Excuse me, that is not xeno x 2 girl, that is my oc naruha chan and how dare you insult my work? How could you not tell them apart by their memorable facial characteristics? You gotta get your eyes checked dude

Oh, well in that case please forgive me for taking your earlier post at face value:
If my un artistic ass can almost perfectly replicate your game's characters and their boring, dull, unmemorable faces, you got a problem.

Of course, lovely as your naruha chan is, I'm not sure why she's relevant unless you meant to point out what a coincidence their appearances are.

welllllll...
in a Mass Effect game. Token Asian dude who you can bond with, probably has a mysterious past as an ex-Army soldier, bitter over how his wife and daughter are DEAD. Will win "best party member" awards from fangirls due to the lingering camera pan of his butt during his intro.

Fixed that for ya :p

Your assessment of sword girl sounds pretty accurate though.

This sounds dumb but so less obvious that you know you're making it up by this point. Honestly, duckroll's assessment of "Naruha-chan" is probably dead on and I don't think he even had to try :p

I doubt this is coming out this year like they say, but this will definitely be one of the games that'll make me get a Switch down the line. Not sure how I feel about this art style, but if the game is fun and plays well I can deal with it.

Thank you, perhaps you aren't as uncultured a lout as I originally surmised. Idk if I can go into this, but
naruha chan is actually the secret clone of xenoblade chronicles 2 girl that was created by the nefarious Villain San. She carries out her duties with the precision of an S Rank swordmaido, but deep down all she secretly wants is Villain San's approval, which he has been unfortunately unable to provide, preoccupied as he is with the apprehension of Meinkarakta to sacrifice to Shin Ebiru, demon-gentleman of the abyss

Lmao

I'll be honest I don't really care much about the designs cause I play these games for the rpg mechanics/exploration/monster hunting, but the people trying to defend these designs are in some deep denial. They are bland/featureless and very disproportionate.

I can definitely see where the complaints are coming from. XB1 and XCX both shot for an anime/realistic middle ground art style. This one has gone full LN as duckroll said.

Oh well as long as they give us a big world to explore and plenty of unique monsters to kill I'll have lots of fun with the game

My feelings exactly. This

xenoblade-chronicles-x-good-face.jpg

is preferable to

Its completely generic and uninspired, flat, featureless and doll like. You might as well draw some big googly eyes, a period for a nose, and a small straight line for a mouth. Trash.

There is nothing less generic about the first one, you just prefer it.

The anime facial features aren't that big of a deal to me, but going for a flatter anime look will certainly make the game look and age better on the Switch's more-limited hardware.

For a game with this kind of aesthetic, character design is largely going to revolve around hair style and costumes. Every female character will probably have the exact same face.

The guy actually has a nose and lips, dorsn't have googly eyes, has stubble which is a facial characteristic, and his face isn't the generic heart shape that is the hallmark of many shitty uninspired animes.

You were saying?

Like i said, reject media.vision characters by Tony Taka

I don't have an issue with those types of designs at all. but coming from Xenoblade's original art style and even Xenoblade X, it feels so uninspired.

I don't understand why they changed the entire character art style and got rid of the original illustrator.

I would say that anime has been pretty ingrained into the Xeno meta-series' DNA since its inception. As per your comparison, it's just "older anime tough guy" versus "anime waifu." I don't think either face design is more or less generic than the other.

This looks like a supporting party member in a Mass Effect game. Token Asian dude who you can bond with, probably has a mysterious past as an ex-space Yakuza, bitter over how he fell out with his younger brother and made him join a rival gang or something. Will never win "best party member" awards from anyone, and might get picked for the party because he does a lot of good damage. Otherwise uninspired design.

This looks like a token "main" heroine in an anime based on a popular Light Novel with designs from an illustrator who has a background in porn. She is probably a fish out of water given how she isn't really human, but takes a liking to the main character immediately. He protects her when other party members warn him about how she will bring trouble, but in the end she will sacrifice herself to save everyone. Fans will fight tooth and nail with each other to vote her or the other heroine competing for the hero's heart as "best girl" in various pointless internet awards.

Wrong. Lao wins best party member in my books
for as long as you have him

Holy hell if stupid anime doodles in my school notebooks could get me a job...

Well I could have gotten a job 10 years ago

Don't tell me. Or maybe I should really try and apply somewhere, good as I am.

I'm not sure I'd call them that, T2's style is immediately recognizable after all, while this game's design are as "generic LN" as they can get. But yeah, they're certainly in the same "family".

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
So after sonic and Zelda now also xeno has its official cycle
Everytime the character design cant catch a break

You mean like most "realistic" Final fantasy characters since FFVIII, right ? Or most western games characters who look like Poser basic dolls ?

Didn't like the realistic approach and the brown haired, rough and tough male model western characters too. My problem with XBC2's current is that it looks similar to the slight 'moe' style that has been used in anime in the past decade.

That generic how to draw an anime girls face looks almost identical to the Monado waifu. I preferred the style where it took a lot of influence from anime, and not straight up look like characters very low budget animes that have to use the same style.

I enjyed the first game because I enjoyed all the characters and the world around them. I want to enjoy this because everything but the character's looks are appealing to me. Hopefully this game uses another British cast instead of what they used in X

Terrible character designs aside, hoping the story is good
You have anime girls turning into swords, how do you think this is going turn out on the scale from Neptunia to Steins;Gate?

That's ok because power of friendship will triumph! This is going to end Tales of Graces F, Xenoblade edition but worse, isn't it?

You know, I don't mind the anime visuals, if only because Monolith are finally providing half decent character models. Having said that, it would have been really nice if they could have just translated this:

Into in-game graphics.

I haven't completely played either of the past two games (even though I own copies/2 copies of the first game) and trying again to get in the first one right now since I have 2 preordered. I've noticed that I find myself enjoying the game a lot more after I realized it has Japanese voices in it too.

There's more than one Blade.

Yeah, but Blade Trinity wasn't very good.
<- this is a joke, but still... spoilers (I think)

...holy shit this is so spot on 💯👌

I'd still take generic Mass Effect character though

All these posts about Xenoblade suddenly becoming anime make me laugh. Have you guys even played the first game? Or any other Xeno game?

I kinda get the complaints about the characters looking generic here, but also, I feel like Shulk is pretty darn generic looking too.

And before anyone points out that that's not what he looks like in-game,
He looks like a finger-puppet in an Alolan-Dugtrio wig in Xenoblade.

I agree with you all on this one. Character design in the first Xenoblade looked very unique and detailed. I think that it was a big part of the game's appeal personally. It was a type of visual design that's been missing from many JRPGs for the last decade or so. Immediately recognizable and unique characters, even with the ability to swap armors in and out.
