1. Reigns ; distilled mobile gameplay. Easy, fun to play, and deep.
2. Rodeo Stampede ; fun gameplay, persistent world hub. I love this combination. Abuses a bit the incentivized ad monetization, but still perfectly playable without spending anything.
3. Train conductor world ; has the same elements that hooked me from Rodeo Stampede, and a train related theme that I loved. It's not at number 2 because it doesn't have iCloud save backups, and I lost all my progress when I had to change my device.
4. Battle of Polytopia ; the perfect Civilization for mobile. Very swift game, generous with the contents it offers for free.
5. Really bad chess ; very clever premise.
6. Human resource machine ; maybe my least favourite game from the World of Goo devs, but cool game nonetheless. Got stuck at a later level, and didn't manage to finish it.
7. Perchang ; one of the coolest physics-based games I've played.
8. Chameleon run ; I don't like platformers on mobile much, but this one managed to hold my attention for quite a while.
9. Egg Inc. ; nice clicker/idle game.
10. Super Mario Run ; probably one of the best platformers on iOS, but I don't think it has a proper monetization design. As usual, I think Nintendo's gonna Nintendo. They tend to think they can pull up something just because they're Nintendo, and I feel this harms their games.

1. Super Mario Run; polish and feel of a Nintendo game on my phone, even as a runner it 'feels' very Mario. Lots of replayability and added modes.

2. Reigns; perfect type of mobile game; fun writing and addictive gameplay.

3. Love You To Bits; absolutely love the art style and general enviornment. fun puzzles.

4. Battle of Polytopia; good mobile Civ type game.
5. Severed; challenging, great style, great transition to mobile platform.
6. Pokemon Go; addictive, became a force of nature for a while there like nothing I've ever seen.

Other games worth mentioning:
x. Lumines (i mean, it's lumines)
x. Rodeo Stampede; fun game mechanic, easy to play and works well with pick up and go style

My top 7 in order

1 Football Manager 2017 (Brilliant port of a fantastic game, my most played title by a mile)
2 Steamworld Heist (A lovely take on turn based strategy, charming and interesting)
3 Rome Total War (A brilliant title faithfully ported to the Ipad)
4 Banner Saga 2 (Did not wow me quite as much as the first but still very impressive)
5 Guild of Dungeoneering (Charming little title that really draws you in to its world)
6 Space Marshals 2 (Rare to have an action game with such good controls)
7 Deus Ex Go (A good puzzle title that is faithful to the Universe)

1. Sorcery 4 ; The epic complex sprawling conclusion to Inkle's fantasy saga is everything I hoped for, and somehome continued to expand on the already grand scope of 2 and 3
2. Imbroglio ; Michael Brough's newest game is a simple-on-the-surface, yet surprisingly-deep hybrid of card game, board game, and roguelike
3. Samorost 3 ; Gorgeous, charming, and playful, this just might be Amanita Design's best work
4. RYB ; I've seen RYB described as "Hexcells meets The Witness", and that's an apt description for this vibrant logical puzzler that teaches through experimentation and puzzle design
5. Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven ; A huge work of interactive fiction to rival even Inkle's work, with an extensive RPG component including stats to manage, items and gear to use, and myriad paths to take.
6. Bullet Hell Monday ; A frenetic kaleidoscopic adrenaline rush of shmup, with perfectly bite-sized stages and a plethora of game-changing unlocks and secrets to unlock
7. Snakebird ; Don't be fooled by Snakebird's colorful cute facade. It's one of the most challenging and rewarding puzzle games on mobile (or anywhere for that matter)
8. Reigns ; Reigns' clever card-based design presents an ever-expanding game of kingdom management in a very mobile-friendly package
9. Demon's Rise 2 ; A massive and challenging strategy RPG with large-scale ruthless battles and a dark fantasy twist with unique classes
10. Love You To Bits ; This sci-fi successor to Tiny Thief is just as charming and even more inventive

Honorable Mentions
x. Fallen London
x. Leap of Fate
x. Teeny Titans
x. Circa Infinity
x. Yankai's Triangle
x. Mini Metro

1. Pokemon Go
2. Super Mario Run

Sorry, feel almost like thread hijacking cos I don't normally game on my mobile, but these games were so good they made it onto my proper GOTY list so felt the need to bump up their position here.
Edit just read the guidelines more thoroughly, ah well! Genuinely only played 2 mobile games, frickin love Pokemon GO for all the criticism it gets for lack of depth, it got me out the house more and got my daughter into Pokemon.
Mario works amazingly as a 1 handed mobile game.
Might get more into mobile games so I have a vote that counts next year.

1. Teeny Titans - solidly built collecting RPG based on the Teen Titans GO! show. Even though I am not a fan of the show, I played this game to completion. It was really nice and addicting! They could have also easily made this a "hey kids, spend $5 to get Darkseid's figure!" but fortunately it is a one time payment game with no microtransaction nonsense.

2. Pokemon GO - This game got me active for the first time in a while. Its the first time I met a complete stranger and had a conversation with them, hung out with them for a few hours, went our separate our ways, and realized I didn't even know his name. A once in a lifetime phenomena experiencing the rush of people in the city, all connected through this game.

3. Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ - A pretty addicting gacha style game set in the world of the Kingdom Hearts.

1. Pokémon Go ; This was a great combination of name recognition, nostalgia and the popularization of ARG games that got people out and about. A legitimate phenomenon. Personally, it meant even more to me. I spent 2-3 months of last year away from home for family medical reasons (related: Fuck Cancer), with no practical console or PC gaming available. This game landed at just the perfect time for me to be both a distraction and a wonderful, cute and fun mobile game. Pokémon Go got me out in the sunshine and green grass and fresh air at a time when I otherwise would not have forced myself to go enjoy the world around me.
2. Super Mario Run ; A lot of the coverage for this game seemed to go from super excited pre-launch right to disappointed, but I had the opposite arc. I was skeptical of some garbage 'virtual button' nonsense ruining what could have been a good Mario mobile game, and instead I think what Nintendo pulled off is a simple control hiding some complexity that is very well done and enjoyable. I'm in no rush and taking my time with it, I have all my pink coins and just a few purple so far.
3. WoW Legion Companion ; While I'm unsure if this is eligible, it's part of a daily game and the app functionality is very well done.
4. MARVEL Avengers Academy ; I got really into this for a while. It has fantastic graphics and voice work and great special events, but ultimately the actual gameplay and the dependency on the free to play and microtransaction models is what drove me away. It's not that I dislike spending money on a good game, it's that I dislike the model where things are time-locked and the feeling of nickle-and-dime-to-death. If this game were a flat $10 like Super Mario Run, or probably even more, I would have purchased it in the blink of an eye and still be playing it.
5. Mini Metro ; A great, addictive train and subway building game.
6. Severed ; fun swiping action, I'm not far into it.
7. Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 ; Pretty good turn-based brawler, plus I'm a sucker for Marvel properties.
8. Uncharted: Fortune Hunter ; A good little puzzler that I had some fun with
9. Miitomo ; I didn't enjoy the questions or much of the Mii customization, but the drop games are pretty fun.
10. Deus Ex GO ; I'll be honest, I'm just rounding out a top 10 here. I enjoyed what I have played of this, but it felt very 'samey'.

Shout out to Carcasonne and Battleheart.
RIP Spirit Stones. Gone but never forgotten.

1. Clash Royale ; Wow...I got hooked on a mobile F2P game. This game deserves the spot of my overall GOTY even though there are admittedly some pay 2 win elements in this game and the progression is tied to typical mobile game timers. The underlying gameplay is just so good and has surprisingly much depth to it. The fast matchmaking paired with great latency free quick matches have an addicting "one more game" character.
Unfortunately, the community is toxic and the developers are too slow to adapt to any balance issues. Still, it is one of the best multiplayer games I have played.

2. twofold inc. ; Good little puzzler from the developers of rymdkapsel. The mechanics are easy but can get quite challenging and the art style and music are nice.

3. Reigns ; I did not like this game much but I had to include at least three games for my vote to count. The underlying idea was great but the game gets very repetitive.

4. Assassin's Creed: Identity ; Well, I also added Reigns to the list so AC: Identity also deserves to get mentioned because it did sometimes feel like a real AC game. These moments were short lived though and overall, it was another poor attempt to get a big console series on mobile. Probably would have been better just to port Liberation over. The MFI support was ok.

5. Inks ; Only played a bit of it. The game did not feel very engaging but it did look nice.

1. Blackbox ; the thinking man's Wario Ware - wish I had created this concept
2. Zip-Zap ; gorgeous, minimal, focussed physics puzzler
3. Reigns ; inventive take on RPG
4. Snakebird ; superb puzzler with amazing level design
5. One More Jump ; great one button twitch/action game with great level design
6. Rush Rally 2 ; amazing one-man achievement - best racer I've played on iOS
7. Mekorama ; amazing one-man achievement - great platform puzzler, still hungry for more fiendish levels
8. Super Mario Run ; typically great work from Nintendo, sorry to have had to put up with the moaining freemium crowd
9. Frantic Architect ; great little one button reaction/action game
10. FlyGuy ; great to see the return of one of my old favourites from the dawn of the web game

Honorable Mentions

x. Inks ;
x. Flappy Golf 2 ;
x. PinOut!
x. Super Stickman Golf 3 ;

Pretty disappointed in the amount of F2P garbage on a lot of these lists.

Lots of fantastic premium games released in 2016. Seems there is a reason why so many devs go F2P: nobody buys them.

2)Severed
3)Crashlands
4)Solitairica
5)Tomb of the Mask

Honorable Mention:
Steamworld Heist
Neon Chrome
Super Cat Tales

Leap Day
Space Marshalls 2
Snakebird

Crypt of the Necrodancer
The Banner Saga 2
Invisible, Inc
Twilight Struggle

1. Clash Royale ; I was already a high level Boom Beach player and then Supercell released this. A fantastic 1 vs 1 online card action game. Compelling, played daily. Really fun game. I'm Level 10 and at 4250 trophies.

2. Super Mario Run ; Oh I love this game. It's so polished and fun. And there's so much technique in a game that seems so simplistic at first glance. Nintendo did an absolutely fantastic job with this.

3. Miitomo ; Not sure if this counts but i put a lot of hours into Miitomo. Me and my friends did. And I collected tons of different outfits and read & answered many, many questions.
