I used to think Zelda sucked for a long time. It always seemed uninteresting to me and never understood the praise. In middle school I played Wind Waker and got far into it. (Beat the boss after the Tower of the Gods), but the whole time I just found the gameplay uninteresting and kinda boring. Over the years I'd see more and more gameplay of other Zelda games, see people freak out, and just wonder why lol. It legit kinda bothered me until like 8th or so grade where I really came to grasp that people enjoy different things, and things that I freak out about would have people looking at me in the same way I look at them when they freak out about Zelda.
I then played Twilight Princess in 11th grade and also found it boring. That was maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Now I'm playing WW HD again because I had a hunch I'd enjoy it more now than I did before, and I do. I knew my tastes have changed a bit, and when I look back on it, a big reason I found WW mediocre before is because games that I was used to playing around that age had a lot of RPG like progression where it came to stats, skills, and that kind of stuff. (Ratchet & Clank, Phantasy Star Universe, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy). So it was always off-putting to me that WW didn't have any of that.
I still think the combat is uninteresting most of the time, but I appreciate the other elements more than I did when I played it in 6th grade. I'm not crazy about it but I think it's a good game and worth playing.
The new Zelda game is the first one to really interest me.
