Eurogamer: Don't Expect Another Deus Ex Game Anytime Soon, EM Working on New TR/GotG

What a shame. It was great franchise and once again buried by second game. Well let's hope for one more new reboot in distant future.
I'm a big fan of original game and kind of liked the new reboot. Too bad the story left us with cliffhanger.

*sigh*
I couldn't give less of a damn about crappy tomb raider and stupid marvel games while Deus Ex is one of my favorite franchises...
I had yet to play MD and now i have the means to but i know it has a "wait... that's how it ends?" ending, don't know if i should even bother at this point.

If it ultimately ends up with Deus Ex being handled by a more competent studio in the future, maybe it's for the best. Human Revolution was a prototypical example of a slightly wonky first game in a series (even though it technically wasn't), which could have been built upon and expanded into a truly amazing sequel. Instead they left all of the problems in place and made the rest of the game worse. Quite an achievement.

I hope this time around they don't do any disservice to the TB franchise like making another dumb deal.

I think the bad PR was so intense that it even bled through to MD and caused it to perform even worse than it already would, since it already was the continuation of a disappointing game.

Damn, I was hoping for more Deus Ex. Don't know what else I can do besides buying the game again, but I already own both PS4 and PC versions :(

I see a lot of posters are still commenting from a dimension where MD was a bad game and not one of the best of last year. That said, don't spend 5 years developing a game. They're lucky the studio wasn't shuttered entirely. Unless you're Rockstar or your game moves 20 million copies, you're not getting away with that shit in modern gaming.

Good project management might be the single most important thing in developing big, single player games these days. If you wind up with creep and your project spirals into some unfinishable mess, you've doomed your studio in many cases.

It's true. I'll have my own thing when I get to work.

You did this

I am well-aware and I realized that I don't like it. I would have no problem with this if Marvel had their own capable studios, but that's not Disney's strategy obviously - same for Star Wars. Instead they clog up already existing ones. But eh... Spiderman will probably be great. Telltale got stuff to do. EA swims in SW-money and now the CD studios get part of the pie. All fine and well, fans love it too. I think it is extra-ordinarily un-exciting.
The studios being chosen need the work too.

Insomniac didn't have anything big, we see here that Mankind Divided didn't do well so Edios need work, etc....

It was and it wasn't.

On one hand, I adore Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Not getting another one from the studio that "gets it" is very disappointing.

On the other, if they got Deus Ex, maybe they can get what made older Tomb Raider games so engaging. The previous two of the reboot are fine, but focusing on platforming and puzzle solving would be nice.

I don't care about Tomb Raider or Deus Ex, so this is excellent news!

We're having a renaissance in comic book games hopefully, can't let Rocksteady be the only studio pumping out quality titles in the genre.

Pretty disappointing. While the execution of MD deserved some flak, the level of vitriol heaped upon it here and elsewhere would imply that it's an awful game - which is unfair.

I just hope the dev team that worked on the MD and HR (Jonathan J-B et al ) don't scatter to the winds as a result of publisher meddling, they've gotten a lot right and who knows how MD would have turned out without SE's decision to cleave the game in two.

Probably wouldn't be out for another few years.

Deus Ex MD had fantastic gameplay, branching side quests and looked absolutelly stunning. And now they abandon it for another TR and Mahvel? Shame!

I never asked for this !

I doubt the low sales had anything to do with the game's story being left unfinished so I'm not gonna blame that for it. Mankind Divided is a very unique game in that there is nothing quite like it in terms of density. It was the most fun I had while exploring a game environment in years.

They are the only studio that "get" Deus Ex. I trust Arkane with the level design but I don't trust them when it comes to getting the feel of Deus Ex right. Plus Arkane hates ladders and Deus Ex has tons of it :p

Nope.

Credit where it's due, it's better than TR2013 but that ain't saying much
Fair enough. I think they can do some neat stuff with the sequel(s?), maybe expand more on that open level stuff. Had a good time with those games, but agreed, industry definitely does not need more games like it.

Which I fear TR/GOTG might be

I played MD for a bit then just stopped and forgot about it. It was pretty cool but I couldn't care about any of it. Controls were really bad too, worse than first game. The game didn't feel good to play and control.

.................huh, what is this about?

So, how is this going to work?
I mean, modern Eidos Montreal to work on a AAA third person action/Adventure game with state of the art graphic and animation... It's the antithesis to their Deus Ex

EM went in a too bold direction regarding content generation with the open world Prague hub. The open world environment was a brilliant achievement, and pushed the game to #1 in my personal GOTY list, but a critical mass of the fanbase wanted a larger emphasis on linear story content and "main missions". The game needed positive word of mouth and widespread critical acclaim to be successful, but too many people were disappointed for this to happen.

It is a shame that rebooted Deus Ex failed under these circumstances imo. They made an honorable gamble that led to an amazing game, but the project was shot down due to logical concessions that were necessary to focus resources on their idea of an open world immersive sim. The in app purchase stuff didn't help to sell the game, but it seemed extremely unfair with all the people who complained that the main quest was gutted, missing the last third, and so on, while completely glossing over the achievement of producing the massive Prague open world environment.

With the disaster that was Mankind Divided, I don't care at all.

MD was my most disappointing sequel in a looooooonng time.

Can we put a bullet in this franchise please? It's never been interesting.

^^And this is just embarrassing.

Not sure if you're talking about Deus Ex or TR, I'd rather they put a bullet in a Marvel game, unless they're doing it Rocksteady justice, then why bother IMO.

A shame for Deus Ex but hopefully Tomb Raider will benefit from a change of developer.

I think I'm pretty close to the end of the latest game and I'm trying to get through it but it's really bland and disappointing after the first game. I was really hoping that it would be given to another studio from about half way through so hopefully there will be a positive side to putting Deus Ex on hold for a while.

I don't think that deal affected PC sales of the game.
Also it looks like it's selling pretty good on PS4/Pro.

Based on what? I see no evidence to support that. Probably hasn't sold 3 million total yet in over a year. Not good for what is supposed to be a blockbuster IP.

Maybe flop isn't the right word, but it definitely didn't light up the charts. The fact that Square Enix handes it off to another studio in favor pf a licensed product shows it's not exactly a top priority any more. You won't see Naughty Dog making Thor over The Last Of Us 2.

The last Tomb Raider game was way more interesting and fun than the last Uncharted. If Eidos Montreal wants to add some of their Deus Ex design onto it, could be a great game
