I don't believe it. An obviously poisoned olive branch.
Give your base something 'unpopular' to fight against, then go to bat for them.

Like I said in the other thread, I would have been really surprised if Trump meddled with or rolled back any current pro-LGBT policies. I really didn't believe the "news" of that proposed EO anyway.

So this confirmation isn't all that surprising for me, at least.

If it's true, he's ahead of knuckle-dragging Republicans on this issue. The gay rights thing has been an unforced error that's killing the party with younger voters.

It seems like Trump is pivoting to more aggressive evangelical signalling on abortion at the same time as totally dropping the clearly lost gay rights obstruction.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the EO "leak" was a way of testing waters. The only thing that can help this country is how much he cares what people think of him. Keep letting him know what is bullshit because I'm sure he wants unbelievable approval ratings, the best.

This kind of thing is very common with authoritarian regimes, they constantly test the public to see how far they can go with their actions. I believe the same thing happened with the Mexican tariff proposal last week. You're going to see more tests.

The Mexican tax shit was actually communicated by the White House press secretary.

To be fair, trail balloons like that are very common in our own non-authoritarian government most of the time, too. Well, not like the Mexican tariff because usually you don't get the white house press secretary to literally say it. You leak it.

This. They may keep this, then do the unconstitutional "Religious Freedom Act" bullshit at the same time, and always side with the latter.

#LGBTopposestrump #fuckofforangeasshole #notfallingforit

Exactly what I said....it's shifting the goal posts so it looks like they aren't outright attacking the LGBT community all while accomplishing what they want.

Pence and more importantly Bannon are in Trump's ear and people really think he'll play his position and be still on this...? LOL ok...

He'll move on this after his SCOTUS pick gets through.
Seems probable. Rolling back protections or making a "religious freedom" EO before the justice gets nominated/confirmed would only put more of a spotlight on the justice's views and would cause people to fight back harder. There's like no chance they nominate a LGBT-friendly guy if they want an anti-choice scalia-esque justice as they've previously expressed.

Yeah, I don't believe this for a hot second.

He may be leaving it alone for now, but there are too many indicators (re: cabinet picks) for me to believe they won't go after it in the future.

I mean, the fact that there has to be a press release for something like this is already problematic. Tomorrow we are heading into another shitstorm with the Supreme Court nominee, specially since it's given that they will be anti Roe vs Wade.

yup, he doesnt seem to care all that much about social issues.

This is good news, but also essentially meaningless for a few reasons: 1) he never campaigned on an anti-LGBT agenda so this shouldn't be a surprise and 2) he bullshits so much, I won't trust this until he's out of office.

People saying he is "shook" or "starting to bend" are delusional.

Yes, trial balloons are not a marker of authoritarianism.

yes i guess it's more likely that the trump squad staged this 'leak' , than it's likely that the media made up the story because they figured fuck it people will believe it's legit and hell it's a coin flip whether he'll do it or not anyway....objectivity works both ways brosefs...

he's been supportive throughout his campaign, people love digging up straw men to induce more needless hate

He wasn't all that supportive, in my opinion. Sure, he held up a flag. He also got Pence to run as his Vice President, and put Bannon into power, among others. And don't forget how he hijacked the Orlando terrorist attack to stroke his own ego.

Trump's admin is shook by this week. It's working.

how? He has been supportive of lbgt rights. i'm sure the people around him will try to push him the other way. he's clearly not a homophobe, obviously his party tries to push him on their shitty agendas but its never seemed like he's made it a focal point to really push that fuckery

he uses everything to stroke his own ego so i didn't see a reason to consider that a red flag imo

Do you have any proof?

His Vice President is extremely anti gay rights so there is reason to not fully believe this.

"Whitehouse announces that white will, for now, remain white and obama is still black."

There is so much urgent evil shit to analyze why let them redirect discussion to one of the infinity of bad things they have not yet done? It is like that "we aren't going to change any EPA grants" announcement. what do they want congratulations ?

i would cite you know the many times he's said it but clearly his words have no weight on this forum. i always say actions speak louder than words, so time will tell, but jumping the gun about it at this point seems like people wanting to find another reason to pick a fight. like all the immigration shit is of no surprise, it's been a huge focal point and rallying call of his since day 1.

The people are picking a fight...that's rich, considering Trump goes out of his way to pick fights every single day. Fuck him and fuck this administration. They don't get the benefit of a doubt anymore.

The problem is that actions do speak louder than words, especially in this case, where he's surrounded himself with people who hold anti-LGBT views. Words have weight on this forum, as do actions.

All this means is that Trump decided not to do something terrible for a moment. He didn't make anything better, he just decided to not fuck with more people for now. Let's see what his record will be on LGBTQ issues going forward, what legislation he signs, who he nominates for the SC, and what more EOs he will sign.
