Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

I've been waiting to start Yakuza for so long (but had heard about 1 and 2 HD, then had heard that THIS was the true beginning, then waited for localizations...), and I've just finished this.

It was everything I'd hoped for and more. I love it. The long wait for Kiwami begins.

0 also implements a lot of changes that make the game smoother. It still has some really obvious oversights ( why doesn't my health heal after coliseum fights), but the games have been improving over time.

Although I wouldn't say the combat is either better or worse. It's nice that you can change styles, but I found Akiyama was snappier and more responsive than Kiryu in Y0, also Kiryu seems to have more heat moves in Y4?

Well, that's Y0 finished. My first Yakuza. Just in time for Nioh too!

Overall it's a 7.5-8 for me. Great main story, great sidequests, fantastic localisation, but the combat gets a tad repetitive in the final third and there's a lot of filler to get through.

Definitely buying Kiwami day one though!

Y0 is a 9/10 for me but I must admit the random encounters are tiresome at the end, you don't get much reward for them.

The bosses and scenario encounters are still awesome, but I've had enough of people pretending I ran into them.

The cabaret club is more interesting than the real estate management. So at least I don't feel so bad about having to start a new management side quest, I guess.

Well, it all depends. I just found the cabaret gameplay extremely fun and progression can be achieved without much busy work.
The real estate quest involves more tedious tasks and some downtime, but has more interesting story lines though and is a nice way to explore the city and stumble upon acitivities, substories and new NPC's. I loved both, but the cabaret part a little more.
This game is just perfect. Do both!

I really got into the cabaret club, might go back and finish all the girls' sidequests but the money payout from it isn't much.

yeah I started wearing the sneaky shoes. Opening up new styles made me a bit more belligerent because I still need to practice the moves. But when you're at the point where 100 million is insignificant, 150k from some street punks is just...why

Started this up last night, although it was late and didn't get too far into it.

I learned how the fighting worked, met up with Nishiki, got a small tutorial on buying abilities and left off
being called in to talk to the lieutenants, which looks like is going to be about the murder of the guy I roughed up
.

This is my first Yakuza and enjoying the small amount I've played. I still have to nail the fighting down, still making mistakes. But it's easy to use so shouldn't take long.

Oh, tried karaoke and did AWFUL. Was labeled "Tone Deaf". lol That one is going to take a ‘lot' of practice if I ever get good at it.

But hopefully I will get some more play into tonight.

I know they are coming out with a remake of Yakuza 1 (Kiwami), I hope they continue with the rest of them. The Gamestop employee who sold me the game told me Yakuza 0 has been selling extremely well, so that's definitely promising.

I really like that there's two secret side-stories you're rewarded with for completing all of the rest for each character. Is this common in Yakuza?

You mean the
Amon
fights? If so - yes. Each game has them with variable requirements. Most games require you to complete all side stories to fight him, while 2 requires you to jump through multiple hoops (unlock all fighters in the arena and beat them all, discover all moves, perform all heat moves etc.) while 6 goes to far the other way and has that story unlock after you complete two specific boss fights in side stories.

Awesome, thanks!

Man, I kinda wish I didn't start with 0. I'm playing 4 and it feels like a real step back in terms of plot and side-quests.

Saejima's plot was mostly him running through sewers and collecting garbage. The cop was a very uninteresting character and his section played like a generic Hong Kong cop movie.

Thankfully Kiryu, Akiyama and Lily are keeping the game interesting.

Sub-stories are no-where near as funny as 0s either, but I feel this is partially due to localisation seeing as the writing for 0 was tongue in cheek (especially for Majima's sections).

Yeah its been weird seeing Yakuza fans in here saying it's their favorite in the series. Only downhill from here!

Exactly, I loved Y0 and I want more, but its kinda lame hearing that I've already played the peak of the series.

Hopefully Kiwami and 6 will sate my thirst

Edit: Oops double post

What's this game's size if purchased digitally? I kind of don't want to wait for Amazon to get more stock and don't really mind not owning it physical :p

It's the same size physically..........

I'm aware, it's just that my third world country Internet connection isn't the best so it could actually happen that waiting for the restock is the same as waiting for the download hahaha (waiting for that FFXV patch was hell... I was planning to play that same day D: )

I think 23 GBs is manageable though :D thanks!

Which one do you mean? I might've missed them.

If you finished all before story end, they should ping via your Pager making an odd noise sometime around end-game:
Jo and So Amon are two family members that challenge Kiryu and Majima to a fight respectively in a Bullfighting Arena. They're just a couple of extra boss fights
.

Yeah, kind of wondered that myself when buying Yakuza 0. Hearing it is ‘the best’ of series so far by a number of people and reading reviews, but that it’s also a great intro game to the series.

I hear Kiwami will have updated combat, similar to Yakuza 0, so that should help. And I’m really hoping they update the rest of the series as well, so there won’t be that “I just played the best (or best two) first” issue.

That's like saying Ocarina of Time is the best in the series, it's only downhill from here :p

Even if the successive games don't match the height of the precious games, they're still great games (And Yakuza 6 comes with Virtua Fighter 5 and Puyo so there's that!)

For everybody worried about the series going downhill from 0, don't. Literally all of them are legit great, it's just some of the stories told in the games are better than the others.

I plan on only playing 0, Kiwami and 6 anyway. No interest in playing PS3 at this point, haha...

Playing Y0 at 60fps and then Y4 at 30fps is a pain on the eyes...

I'm still enjoying Y4, the story is good, it's just not as well told. Fuck Saejima and his sewer antics.

Saejima's sewer tactics are not great..

But I loved Akiyama's chapter. It provided a real noir feeling that I've never gotten before from the series.

Also Tanimura is awesome and anybody who says otherwise is a fool. Saejima can go jump off a cliff though.

Why does Majima look OLDER in the flashbacks? I guess because Sega was too cheap to redo them and just reused the ones from previous games (can't remember if it was 4 or 5 or both)?

Jokes on you. Seijima wouldn't even been scratched if he jumps off a cliff ;) Seriously, he's one of my favourite characters in the series, I really want him to show up again in a larger presence in a new game.

Also, in terms of best Yakuza games, everyone should hope for some sort of PS4 release of Yakuza 2 - since your all missing out on Ryuuji Goda!

So far Akiyama's has been my favourite, and I wouldn't have minded if the whole game was about him and Sky Finance antics.

Tanimura's section I can't gel with because I've seen the "need to find my father's killer" plot done before, with something like Yakuza 0 I'd like some sort of edge to it that makes it unique. Feels like a standard Hong Kong cop thriller movie.

The sub-quest with the chinese cop was more interesting.

Regarding Saejima, I actually do like the character. It's just his section in the game was shit. Running around sewers and collecting garbage is the worst. It's just... it's the worst.

Oh I'm hoping they'll remake Yakuza 2, and then possibly do a remaster of 3,4,5 and Dead Souls. The latter probably won't happen but hey, a fan can dream!

Edit: also, Saejima is a beast no matter what anyone says. I love him as a character, and when he sings Bakamitai (it's so good btw).

You and I share the same opinion on Yakuza 4 lol. I hated saejima until 5 honestly. Tanimura was awesome, and seeing his backstory resolved through the substories was great.

Also, every Yakuza game is worth playing. Obviously 0 is great because there's a much better focus on 2 characters and there's a ton of quality of life/system additions compared to the past games (shocker). But every game has a story worth telling, except maybe 5. Even then, it's still a great experience.

Fair enough. Saejima is a beast, that I can't deny.

He really did grow on me though, but I initially disliked him. It just rubbed me the wrong way when they tried to pass him off as having a similar power level to Kiryu. Though if I'm being entirely honest, I'm just not a fan of his overly slow and lumbering playstyle. Though the ability to pick up traffic signs and poles and whip them around in Y5 certainly helped ease the pain :D

Is the story in 5 weak? :(

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
My god .. the final chapter is so fucking HYPE. haven't felt that FUCK YEAH LETS DO THIS feeling in a while.

Kiryu and Nishki's double team heat actions are straight out of Fast and Furious 6.

Yakuza 4/5 should've been one game that blended in Kiryu's angsty taxi driver story better.

They're all great but the dev definitely hit some roadblock in finding ways to develop Kiryu story further.

Yeah what was that about?

I eventually decided that Kiryu probably got soft because he spent the last few years in an orphanage. Meanwhile Saejima is in prison getting into fights.

I believe in Kiryu's chapter he does mention that his power level has gone down.

Just started Chapter 9, and from what little I played I'm going to have a fun fun time navigating Kamurocho without advancing the main story. I'll need a cowcatcher to get through the hordes of dudes keeping me from putting in my offers IN CASH.

I did manage to recruit all non-platinum hostesses back in Chapter 7, so once I get back to Sotenbori I'll have plenty to do.

Kiryu
freaking wrecks both Tanimura and Akiyama single handedly lol
, so maybe that's not the case but who knows.

And in regards to your previous post, most people seem to agree that Y5 has the weakest story. It goes
so broad and so vast that it doesn't know how to rein it all in and tie everything effectively.

I personally think Y3's story was worse (it was just BATSHIT) but it gets some points from me for the orphanage part at the beginning and the general Kiryu in a Hawaiian shirt stuff.

Though Yakuza 5's story was worth it just for Shinada's chapter alone IMO. Great minigames, great substories and is a REAL farcry from the paragons we usually play as in Yakuza games.

Is this game a good test for 60fps perception?

The gameplay is 60fps but when it gets to fancy cutscene time it drops to 30fps instead.
Either that or my TV is freaking out.

Ok, so the game is indeed picking up. I'm finally running into side stories and discovering some of the sweet little mini games. Pocket Circuit is fucking deep enough to be its own game.

Liking it a lot more now.

That's cause cutscenes are 30 fps lol. It's generally stable but there can be some dips and some screen tearing here and there.

PS4 Pro's Boost mode seems to be a perfect experience though.
