Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Can't believe how many of you have already finished the game! I'm only on Ch. 7 and already have 40 hours clocked. And I only just started cabaret club.

Speaking of Ch. 7, I really do not like Majima.
Turning his back on Makoto and Lee like that, what a spineless shit.

Oh, is there anything missable in the game? Never been a fan of those, so if there is anything "you really need to keep an eye out for this, you don't want to miss it" type situations, would really appreciate it.

Finally got the problem with my ISP sorted out so I can now talk about the ending and the story!

[Yakuza 0 Ending Spoilers]
From the very beginning, you know it's not gonna happen cause Makoto is not in any of the other games, but good God, if that ending didn't play with my emotions. I mean, to not even know Majima's name? Come on, that's too cruel.

The finale was one of the strongest that I've ever seen in any game, period. When Sagawa grabs Majima's suit and he says that he'll kill him if he doesn't let go, man that was the "Oh my God, he finally snapped" moment. I really loved that. Though, I gotta admit that he was a little different from the Majima that I knew and expect. The Majima from past games felt like someone who have dropped many people and would drop anyone who would stand in his way. But this Majima.... he was too green. I at least expected him to kill the assassin, but nope.

And his personality change wasn't as good as I expected. Before it felt like he was legit crazy, but now it seems like he is just acting that way since it's more fun. But, I actually kinda like his new Yakuza 0 personality to him from past games, so I don't know what I'm actually complaining about.

Lastly, while Kiryu had a really big role in overall story and had some amazing moments, Yakuza 0 definitely felt like Majima's story in an amazing way. I really loved that about the game.
i really wish
Makoto would've recognized Majima and ditched that doctor sensei. lol

Has there been any public sales numbers for any Yakuza titles in the past for the western market?

here's the link:
edit: seems like vg chartz is blocked here. but you can go to the site and do a search for Yakuza in their game data base to see the sales numbers

i really hope Yakuza 0 is much bigger success than those numbers for previous games.

You mean
his refusal to kill another girl and have her face mutilated?
What a dick.

I don't think there's anything like that.

No substories are tied to the chapter, so you can do them whenever. There are substories that you can miss if you don't know where they start so you can consult a guide or do some good ol' fashioned exploring.

Only a bunch of trophies, but that's like any game ever. No missable sidecontents or stuff like that. There's even post-game to finish all the substories and minigames and whatnot after you're done with the story.

Yes, that's the source of your famous "Welcome to YakuzaGAF" gif :D
Hahaha, you know it's funny how no one ever asked why the hear bar in that gif is
red
while my combat overview specifically said
blue, yellow and pink colors for styles :p

i really wish

Screw the canon, they should've just done that lol

Hm, ok. Will need to look which trophies are missable. Not that trophies are super important to me, but I'd like to try and plat if it's reasonable enough.

But that's good nothing else is going to be missable.

here are the ******** search for yakuza sales in North America.

They're blocked because they pull all their numbers out of their ass, so it's anything but helpful in sales discussions.

Lol. Platting this game is in no way reasonable.

You need to play through the game twice (once in a regular difficulty, and second to unlock Legendary difficulty). And Legendary can ONLY be done with a fresh save.

You need to get 100% completion on the CP List as part of the trophy, which includes many hours of Shogi, Cee-Lo, Koi Koi, Mahjong, Bowling, Pool, Darts, Dancing, Substories, Side businesses (one for each character), Erotic videos, collecting phone cards, calling up loose women, Beating the shit out of people, fishing, poker, roulette, baccarat, blackjack, betting on catfights and
arena
.

Don't want you to be misled, the trophy for this game requires a LOT of time.

About the spoiler:

It will make more sense if we go through all events that led to that situation:

Tachibana lives in China with his mother and his sister
He joins the chinese mafia and abandons his family
He ends up in Japan
His mother passes away, which makes Makoto to go to Japan seeking her brother.
Oda tricks her and sells her to the Korean mafia.
Oda and Tachibana meet and eventually see the video of his mother and sister
Tachibana goes to Tokyo to search for Makoto
Makoto is recued by Lin and they end up in Osaka

That news, IIRC, must have been old footage of his family that was broadcasting on chinese news. Because by that time, Oda already sold Makoto and his mother should be already dead.

Ah okay, it was that last part that really threw me and got me confused initially.

where's the yakuza lifetime sales numbers someone posted? i think it was in the yakuza 0 a month left waiting thread but i wasn't sure where the sales numbers came from.

Ok, understood. Definitely not reasonable. lol

Oh well. Still will enjoy the game either way. :)

The missable trophies are all pretty easy to get, and a trophy guide will tell you which chapters they're in so you know when to keep an eye out for them.

The game is certainly fantastic, and just try to take everything at your own pace and give everything a try.

Just saying that the Platinum is REALLY time consuming and that you shouldn't worry yourself over it unless you're willing to make the time commitment.

Nah, I won't. I am by no means someone who works hard at trophies. I mean I try to get them done if I can. But to give you an idea, I have platted ONE game, ever. That's it.

So definitely will be playing this at my own pace.

Thanks so much for your help...again. lol

I have the NA sales.

Yakuza Dead Souls ~6k

Yo, by the way, is there any reason why the substory challenge were you try to break Ruka's OutRun high score (As well as the other girl's high score for Space Harrier.) is blocked from streaming? If you play these arcade games outside of that substory it's all fine, so I'm gonna guess it's just an oversight.

Seriously the most misleading thing about any Yakuza game's trophy list. The rest of the trophies are just like "do some things" while the one trophy is just casually sitting there with "do everything in the game."

Most likely an oversight yes. The original JP version actually didn't allow for recording in the entire game which of course they changed for the western release.

Ishin also has a similar recording block for (almost) the entire game.

Seriously, if you guys want to thank the SEGA/Atlus people then let them know.

There's a survey that you can take for the game in order to give them some info, you can find it on the PSN dashboard for the game.

Also tweet to people like Scott strichart and John Hardin (atlusprime) and let them know that you liked the game and would like to see more of this :)

There was way too dark a period when it seemed like Yakuza 5 might even have been the last Yakuza game to get localized when they announced 0, and then almost out of the blue announced the localization for Kiwami and 6. So we need to keep this going to the point where they'll even prioritize porting new games Day-1 with Japan/Asia.

I reckon 0 will do what the first series did.

Yakuza 0 did get a mainstream boost from prominent youtuber like AngryJoe or RadBrad but if you notice, the viewed numbers are just lower than most of their reviews and let's play. I think the latter even stop let's play of the game.

Ultimately, it's a very niche series in the West and the target audience was simply people who are open to Japanese games. Like before, I feel that most of the people that like Japanese games seemingly turned a blind eye to this series for one reason or another.

Also, this OT pages now exceed Gravity Rush 2 is about to double Yakuza 5, the game every yakuza fans beg to localise.

You can normally tell something big is about to happen when you get a "are you sure you want to carry on" type prompt.

i think you're right, as I just completed chapter 2 with that bossfight with the real estate henchman.

fuckin finally, I've been wanting to kick his ass for a while. and then you hand his ass to him and he's still being an arrogant fuck.

so I finished chapter 2, the cutscene for the casino shit started and i'm like what am I watching, who's the dude with the shiny shoes and then when it was revealed to me
Majima
I was like, "OHHHHHHHHHHHH!" (in a quiet voice though, since i'm at work remote playing this shit

Just want to point out Neptunia has managed over 2 million sales in the West, to stress how small Yakuza's fanbase was in the West (Yeah Neptunia has more releases but it's still pretty amazing Neptunia, which feels more niche, accumlated so much sales) it really was the niche of the niche series in the West.

Personally though I'm still expecting Yakuza 0 will manage 150,000 to 200,000 sales LTD in the West. That's an improvement over 5 and all I ask for.

jesus, wow. So anything over 100k would pretty much be a massive success by the standards of the series. Hope it does well for them. I'm really looking forward to Kiwami and 6 now.

Man, expanding to steam really helped Neptunia.

Maybe Sega should do the same for this too.

Just so you can understand how utterly niche this series has been in NA. (this is from before Yakuza 5's release)

here's a short list of games that have sold better than any yakuza title:

gravity rush
tearaway
resistance: burning skies
the wonderful 101
zombi u
ghost recon shadow wars
any phoenix wright game for the ds
eternal sonata
dark sector
untold legends: dark kingdom
viva piñata trouble in paradise
ogre battle 64
earthworm jim 3d
bubsy 3d
resident evil 3 for dreamcast

I really don't get it though, sure, the series can be a bit quirky, but especially looking at Son of Sparda's list, it's baffling how bad the series' sales are over here.

Just reached 100 hours of play time according to in-game timer, and my completion is at 62%

...I'm still at chapter 7, about to challenge 2nd cabaret club.

Edit: Oh, seems that the in-game timer keeps counting even when you're in PS4's main menu. That might drop my actual play time to 70-80-ish hours.
Still though, there's so much side-content to get lost on...

It helped but the series still has over a million sales on the Playstation platform.

But unlike Neptunia, Sony actively supports the franchise, so I doubt Sega is in a place to try and push the series to the PC market.

I think it's understandable. It's a Japanese game that has

No waifu / Bishōnen husbando, no anime-like aesthetics, no fantasy/sci-fi worlds.

I just ordered a copy of Yakuza 0 even though I've only tried one on PS3 way back and didn't stick with it. I'm looking forward to diving into it some this weekend.

Edit: Went with BestBuy as Amazon was sold out.

Holy shit @ Dead Souls. Just fucking wow.

I liked that game. :(

0 has to be by far the best selling game in the series with such abysmal figures. Thank you, gaming press, for getting the word out. Finally.

Hostess/cabaret clubs? :p
Still though, I think the more realistic art style is a definite factor, since it doesn't appeal to the fan of anime Japanese games and doesn't appeal to the Western game fans either, so it sits in the mid tier group that is incredibly niche nowadays.

Same here. I mean I would've have agreed with what Usobuko said, if only we didn't have numerous Mosou games and other Japanese titles that don't have the stuff that he listed either and they still do way better than any Yakuza title.

I mean, the series even has a semi Waifu thing going on for it with hostess clubs and yet people who are into those stuff still give this game a pass...

It's a small thing, but my favourite aspect about Brawler is that as you upgrade it you can see how it will eventually become the fighting style of Kiryu's later games. Like, I'm referring to the [][][][][]/\/\ combo that ends in the same classic wheel kick Finishing Blow from the old [][][][]/\/\ combo of Yakuza 3 onwards, or how the Heat Move from a standing grab is Kiryu's traditional punch-punch-headbutt combo. I love spotting little callbacks in fighting moves like that.
