Nioh Review Thread

I don't know much about the game and decided to watch IGN plays live where they went through the tutorial.
Is it just me or does it look like an early PS3 game, graphics wise?

Graphics are definitely not the game's strongest suit, that's for sure. "Early PS3 game" is a tad hyperbolic though.

I would give it a lower score now based on the change too the Co-op mechanic from the last trial beta. Seems pointless now that 1 friend HAS to complete missions before doing it with a friend unlike in the last trial where both could go in Blind.

Graphics are fine, Gameplay top notch.

8 hours to complete the tutorial and first level? Are these guys for real?

I'm not one to mock people for being a little slow with games but 8h for the tutorial level seems excessive. There is hardly anything difficult in there.

Back when games™ reviewed Demon's Souls, they gave it 10/10 but opened by saying the first level had taken them 8 hours to finish. I mean, that's crazy. 2-3 hours is probably at the upper end, and I could maybe believe 4 hours perhaps, but 8 hours for one level?! They even admitted that running through it's probably 5 minutes end-to-end.

...What? 8 hours?

I'm only 6 hours in and I've completed... The 'Prologue' level, the tutorial, the 1st Level, the 2nd Level, 4 Sub-missions and half way through the 3rd level... and I've died a fair bit of times too and made sure to explore every corner... How could they take 8 hours to do not even half of that!?

Polygon either needs to hang it up, or they should consider hiring somebody that's actually good at games. It's not like there's a shortage of gamers who are also competent writers.

So i'm seeing the same case as Bloodborne in 2015. Early GOTY canditate, end of the year no one will remember it except GAF.

This will only happen if another, way more generic RPG with a good story and bad combat also releases this year.

;)

Yeah, Souls, Nioh and Dragon's Dogma are the holy grails of gameplay oriented RPGs. I love all of them. No need to discriminate. Dragon's Dogma has better ranged combat than some dedicated shooters out there.

I think from an outside perspective (aka, if your not a fan of the Souls game) people might be surprised to learn that a lot of people love those games for other reasons than just the combat.

It's why, having played Nioh and DD, it's easy to admit the combat in those games walks circles around a Souls title but at the same time but acknowledge that they falter in places where a Souls game succeeds in spades.

What four? Mass Effect is the only one I see with questionable combat. Horizon Zero Dawn will not falter in combat/controls, same for NieR Automata. Persona 5 is turned based so it's kind of in a different category.

I absolutely adore Mass Effect combat, if the MP is anything like ME3MP...hoo boy, so happy.

Horizon and Nier both look to have even better combat too...it truly is a great time to be an ARPG fan, am I right? :)

Zelda looks like it's going down the ARPG route too...

2016; the year of the shooter.
2017; the year of the ARPG.
2018; the year of grand strategy (I can dream).

I would agree with that. I think both of those games have better combat mechanics but Souls and Bloodborne have such unique enemy design and atmosphere that the other two don't do as well, IMO.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

You could also say that Nioh tells a much clearer easier to follow story as it plays things out mostly in cutscenes and the like. Its really just a matter of preference after a while as while I think the Soulsborne games have some really cool looking enemies, it does get a bit repetitive as they're basically milking Berserk dry in terms of inspiration.

Ok, to be fair, I looked at some boss fight video and it looks very impressive.
But, oi, that tutorial level looked rough. Character model looked like ninja garden vita to me.

I really really hope this isn't becoming the next Witcher III / Bloodborne situation.

Souls fans and Nioh fans need to get along, just sayin'. Mostly they share the same camp. :D
Witcher III and Bloodborne are kind of apples and oranges. I can definitely see that depending on priorities one would pick one over the other, and it gets doubly bad when people want to talk about which is the GOTY.

This is like apples and pears, or mandarins and oranges (maybe lemons and oranges). It's a slight preference thing at best and you can easily love both for similar reasons. That, and DSIII is just getting DLC this year so there shouldn't even be GOTY competition. We'd have that between Nioh and Zelda or Mass Effect if anything.

Cheat Codes Central should just avoid playing any games full stop imo.
Don't know what their NiOh review is, but their reviews have always been trash. Never understood why they moved beyond cheats, but I guess with cheats becoming less prevalent getting with the times meant doing it poorly.

If you think a site is clickbait and still want to click on it remember to put on adblock first before you do then remove afterwards protip

Dragons Dogma shouldn't be lumped with those two. Nioh is pretty much Souls, DD is closer to something like Witcher 3 than it is Souls or Nioh imo.

Not that I'm against more opinions aggregated, but if you need more of reason Metacritic is a joke, the amount of shit reviews they have for so many games that:

A) Have absolutely no editorial standard
B) Spoil the game
C) Don't even exist anymore due to a broken link

Or any combination above sure does make you make you wonder why it matters at all.

I know reviews are just opinions, but wow at that CCC review.

The game's grindy premise has been exhausted for what seems like decade and will leave you feeling more defeated than anything else. The combat mechanics are certainly worth noticing, but the environment restricts them, making it a wash. Do yourself a favor and pass on this compilation of recycled concepts and frustrating gameplay.

Yeah, I definitely don't agree with their review. It's a bit difficult to read, but it's an opinion among plenty of others that I agree with.
