Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that worldwide shipments of RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard (RESIDENT EVIL 7), the latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, for PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Windows PC have surpassed three million units.

The Resident Evil franchise features survival horror games in which players utilize a variety of weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations. Cumulative sales of the games in the series now total 76 million units* since the first title debuted in 1996. Support from the passionate fan base across the globe even today, more than 20 years later, makes it Capcom's flagship game series. (*As of February 10, 2017)

RESIDENT EVIL 7 is the latest installment, and builds upon the series' roots of fear, exploration and tense atmosphere. The full game is also available to play via the included optional PlayStation®VR Mode for the PS4 version. RESIDENT EVIL 7 is also an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game which allows play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 with shared saves, game add-ons, and achievements. In addition to utilizing the new proprietary RE ENGINE to push hardware specifications to their limits, the game's system underwent a dramatic shift from its previous third-person camera to a new first-person perspective in order to provide an overwhelming, deeply immersive horror experience. By incorporating broadly scoped innovations and refocusing on horror, the title earned numerous high-scoring reviews from around the globe and garnered attention from fans who also highly praised the game, leading it to exceed three million units shipped. Capcom will continue to expand interest and demand for the title by releasing additional downloadable content, as well as holding in-store PlayStation®VR demos throughout Japan with the aim of further promoting sales.

Furthermore, the newest Hollywood film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, has had a strong performance worldwide, pushing the film series' total global box-office to over one billion dollars. As a result, the Resident Evil film series boasts the all-time top box office gross of any film series based on a video game to date.

Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences.

They deserve all these sales and more. Game is quickly growing on me the more I think about it. Goes with some of my favorite entries in the series.

Well deserved!

Well, I thought RE7 was a great game so all I can say is congratulations, Capcom! Enjoy the well deserved success of RE7! Also,
please completely ignore the success of RE7 and it's first-person perspective, and give me an RE2 REmake with fixed camera angles, please.

It's a fantastic game, and I'm happy to see another AAA horror game on the market, especially one that actually delivers on the horror actually and atmosphere. It's definitely one of the horror greats.

I don't think RE7's success will effect RE2make. We already have REmake Remaster for that.

It'll effect RE8 tho, probably.

Still about a month a half to ship 1 more million to hit their target. Should be doable given how close we still are to launch.

Game hasn't dropped at all in price yet in the US which is also a positive sign

Well deserved... Vr mode is groundbreaking and revolutionary. Thanks Capcom for taking the chance, I hope more developers follows Capcom footsteps.

Yeah, and it hasn't been on sale yet, which will move units and trigger more shipments...

I'm fine with first-person for future mainline games. My only beef with the perspective personally is that I wish 7 had actual third-person cutscenes instead of just scripted events where you can't move anything but the camera (and that are also unskippable on repeat playthroughs) Wasn't a big fan of that. But, I'm actually a pretty big fan of all 3 styles of mainline RE, and would prefer to see fixed-camera angles, third-person, and first-person co-exist (perhaps through different sub-series) rather than have the series be homogenized in a first-person perspective. That's what happened with RE4 (all RE's after it had the same perspective for over a decade, save for a couple of rail shooters), so I can't help but feel a bit of concern, considering how well 7 has been received.

Deserves more than that really, didn't 6 sell like six million at launch?

6 has sold 6 million, Lifetime units. Well almost 7 now, 6.7 to be exact.

But no it didn't move 6 million at launch.

Edit - It shipped 4.9 million units in its first 6 months on sale. RE7 is tracking pretty favorably with it, depending on how legs go.

Fantastic game first resident evil for me and I had a blast being scared the entire time. Psvr killer app. Should be a bundle get it together Sony. Hope it sells whatever they hope it does

Honestly I won't be surprised if later down the line we see a PSVR / RE7 bundle. Maybe in time for Halloween. Its the first real Killer App for VR and it would be wise to put them together at some point

I hope this is followed by a Sony announcement that they've sold another 3 million PSVRs.

RE7 in VR is one of the most monumental, transformative gaming experiences ever.

I hope it falls short of Capcom's expectations and misses their targets. Not enough to make Capcom consider canning the series, but enough to make them stop with this horror stuff and just make RE action games again. I want to punch boulders and shoot shoot bang bang. Don't wanna be scared. Just want a good Chris/Leon/Jill/Claire shooter again like RE5. Big budget, big monsters, lots of big guns.

'Grats Capcom! I really hope this inspires them to stick to what made their franchises, and themselves, one of the GOAT

The odds of it missing targets at this point is extremely slim.

I kind of bet that you will get an action TPS RE still though. I'm betting Revelations 3 will be a thing as the first 2 were both considered successful for Capcom, and they probably will use that (and REmake2) to keep TPS RE fans happy while RE8 will continue the 1st person focus on horror / VR

The most horrifying part of anything related to Resident Evil is this post ^.

This game is pretty much impossible to buy in stores in New Zealand at the moment (I had to buy it on PSN), I think they're selling a lot more than initially expected. Has anyone else ran into trouble finding copies?

That's not how this works.

meh...Not a fan of that direction.

RE4 was great, but I think so many games have done what RE4 accomplished now. I think don't devs can stay passionate doing that over and over again. We've had Gears, Souls games, Dragon's Dogma, Dead Space, Uncharted, etc...

Sounds like you might just want to play some remasters though.

How many Digital Copies were sold? I bought mine digitally. Hopefully this convinces Capcom to keep Resident Evil a Survival Horror instead of a more action focused title like the past few iterations.

It's not a popular opinion around these parts since some people actually do seem to dig the horror aspect. It's certainly good for them, but I have to look out for my own interests too.

Sorry guys, but if Capcom wants to make a first person horror game with jump scares and not use any established RE characters and mythos for most of the setting, they should just do a new IP or something...

Fantastic. Hopefully means the resurgence of survival horror.

Survival horror never left, the AAA publishers just unanimously decided it wasn't what the public wanted because reasons. So glad indies have been filling these unnecessary genre gaps by big publishers last gen.

What other games can I do this in? Aside from RE5 & 6

Don't worry, you always have the sequel to Umbrella Corps to look forward to!

I want them to go back to the old gang, for sure. Ethan is the worst of the mainline RE protags. That being said, I love every version of RE's formula so I would be cool with whatever direction they took the franchise in. I do think there is a way to merge the horror with action in a good way. Something more like RE4, but a good bit scarier.

I wouldn't trust anyone but Mikami though. And even then, I'd give him five years development time.

Personally, I'd like to see RE8 continue the path RE7 started, Revelations 3 to continue the action-shooter path with returning characters, and RE2 Remake to bring back the fully classic style and lead to a remake of RE3 and perhaps more.

That's a lot to ask for, but RE is one of Capcom's more prosperous series right now, so...

"GODDAMMIT."

Although I hope action RE continues in some form. Some people call them generic, but there's something unmistakably RE about the way they play. The movement, the way they use melee. Even in games that are markedly different like RE6 or Revelations you know what you're playing can only be Resident Evil. I'd hate for that to go to waste.

We really just need a Mercenaries All Stars game, and I'll be happy.
