Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

god, i wish kiwami - or at least 6 - would finally sort out the saving screens. it's always felt archaic that the game has to save, then the system file has to save as well, each time. if it's gotta be like that, can we at least do em simultaneously?

6 sorts that out. It just auto saves all the damn time instead which is a blessing and a curse in equal measures (make sure you manual save before playing Mah Jong in case you lose a whole stack of cash as the game auto saves right after a match!)

Thanks for your replies guys.Ok reading those impressions makes me happier.
I got my hopes up again xD.

Btw does the story have a resolution for other important characters too or it's only Kiryu?
What about Akiyama for example xD?

Yeah, that answer is a bit spoilery, so I'll try and be as vague as possible:

Haruka - gets resolution to her story.
Date - kinda gets a bit of resolution?
Akiyama - Sort of I guess?
Anyone else? Nope. It'll be very interesting to see just what direction they choose to take with the next game.

So, how bad does the game run on base PS4? Is the framerate as bad as the Yakuza 5's chase scenes?

How bad was 5's chase scenes? I never remember having frame rate issues with them (beyond the fact that chase scenes still existed, if it weren't for Mack then nothing good came from that terrible gameplay element).

From what I've seen of the base game though, it runs the same as Yakuza 5 normally, perhaps with a couple more drops. 5 didn't exactly run amazingly well when exploring either for whatever reason. Its just the extra tearing that really could be annoying depending how tolerant you are to that sort of thing. Glad I have a PS4 Pro myself as it'd have driven me mad!

At times some of them would go as low as 15-20fps.

Man, if the game runs even worse than Y5, then it's gonna be really annoying on base PS4. I can tolerate screen tearing but frame drops are super annoying.

Fairly certain 6 is an inconsistent 30FPS on base PS4. Certainly not 15-20 FPS from what I've seen/heard. That said, I really don't remember 5 having issues like that, I just remember odd drops here and there (then again, I have blocked out most chase scenes from my mind for sanity's sake!)

The level of inconsistency will be the question then. Cause I'm okay with Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 3 level of frame drops. Hopefully, it'll be similar to those titles.

Same here. Yakuza 5 was the first time the performance really affected the play, often had to change the camera angle in fights to stabilize the FPS.

Hopefully the base PS4 version runs well, else I'll just have to play on my brother's Pro.

I'm in the same situation. The only difference is that my brother has a base PS4 as well, so I'm screwed if it doesn't run well on that.

If you have a decent computer you can emulate the first game. I played it through that way a couple of years back thinking they'd never do an HD update of it (then the day I finished it they announced 1&2 HD for PS3!). Or you could just get the PS3 HD update, which basically feels just like playing the game on the PC (in that the load times before fights is eliminated and its in HD, only now you also get a few little improvements like item management through phone booths which was absent until Kenzan).

Thanks for the input. I will definitely try a PS2 emulator if I can find a good deal. I sill have a copy of the first edition Ryu ga Gotoku 1 for PS2. $50 (or $30 on ebay) is kinda pricy for me.

As for the performance of 6, the second (or third) patch boosted the performance slightly on Pro. I guess it did it on amateur as well

Yakuza: Dead Souls, but that's a non-canonical zombie spinoff.

After that... I seem to recall he appears the most in Yakuza 2, probably followed by Yakuza 1 and 3. Relatively minor role in 4 and 5.
Calling his role in Yakuza 5 relatively minor is being extremely generous. That game made him an absolute chump. That's actually one of the reasons that Yakuza 5 is my least favorite entry in the series.

On the otherhand,
his fight was my favourite in the series and that music was amazing.

Not that it bothered me, it irked me more that Kiryu and Saejima are on the same power level, but the previous game Kiryu can wipe the floor with
Tanimura and Akiyama
. Ah well, c'est la vie.

Maybe they dance around it slightly, but Kiryu is still the most OP guy around.

He's basically taking on an army by the end his chapter in 5!

Saejima is too boring dumb to even register on the scale.

It's funny and kinda sad to say this but Ishin is the best. It captured Majima in the original very well.

And how cool Mine is in Ishin.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. Majima basically steals every scene he's in in Ishin. I remember him being awesome in Kenzan as well.
And yes,
Mine rocks in Ishin. I was concerned they would have him turn out to be a villain by the end of the game like in 3, but they didn't go down this route, and made him a badass to the very end.

Great minds think alike ;)

yeah, it's different from Mad dog Majima but he got a good role in Kenzan.

I like how Mine turned out to be too. Mine as Hijikata Toshizo does something with Kiryu as Saito Hajime aka (real) Sakamoto Ryoma cooperatively and Kiryu as Saito Hajime aka (real) Sakamoto Ryoma fight against (fake) Sakamoto Ryoma, it's complicated but mind blowing.
Small inputs of the story here, Sakamoto Ryoma (Kiryu) is a representative of revolutionist side. And Hijikata Toshizo (Mine) is a representative of Edo Shogunate. So they are in the different camps and it isn't possible to do somehing as partners. But unlike the real history, Kiryu got another role as Saito Hajime in Ishin and Saito Hajime is a member of Hijikata's clan...this is a very catchy plot for the history fans. And more interesting stuff is Sakamoto Ryoma was assassinated by unknown killer but it is said that the killer was Saito Hajime. RGG studio did a good job to make a fiction based on the history.

Yeah, the plot was ace. I'd not delved into the history at all before playing Ishin but between Ishin's plot, and the actual history of the time period, I found it really fascinating. Makes me wonder if there are any other really good periods of time in Japan's history to do another spin off down the line...

It is VERY good. My advice would be to print the guide if possible (pdf is available on the website) and use that as it'll save you a lot of back-and-forth if you use your phone.

Game is completely playable and you can definitely understand the story, it's not so complicated. Substories are also translated so you never feel lost. I'm currently playing through it myself with no issues, and a lot of people in this thread have already finished it and all enjoyed it.

All-in-all, it's an amazing game and I highly recommend it, even with the guide.

Here's the guide in question: http://www.khhsubs.com/projectsrggishin.html

You'll be fine just following the guide. It covers all the bits you need to understand to get the most out of things story wise, and gameplay is your standard Yakuza stuff so you should be able to get on with it without any issues.

Basically if you've got nothing against using a guide to read through the story points you'll be fine. Its certainly an excellent game with some brilliant set pieces and tons of content. I strongly believe it'll never get officially translated unless the series sees an even greater surge of interest with Kiwami/6 (especially if we don't get a new game in the series for a few years).
I'd like to believe that greater interest in the series as a whole would cause the team to go ahead with HD remasters of the other mainline games to get them all onto the PS4, I see that as a far more likely option compared to Ishin getting translated.

Dr. Minamida should come back with a new version of his Inner Fighter machine but this one allows the user to travel through different places in time so we can go to prehistoric times and punch out sabertooth tigers or to the future so we can have a proper team up with Dan Marshall and fight Hollow children(and not be in the multiplayer for the JP version)

Also as for playing games in Japanese, I never found it so daunting that I couldn't play anything, not only the RGG games but games as well, all it takes is some patience(guides can help a lot if you are depending on them), of course that really varies with the person as some people even when something is in a language that they can understand and on the screen or being said to them they still don't know anything.

yeah, this sounds neat since i hate checking back & forth as you said - just how many pages are we talking for the KHH guide though?

Yeah, the IF stuff still has a lot of possibilities. They could definitely use it to have you travel back in time (to previous games even) to relive famous fights/moments in the series (I'd love for that to happen)

Heck, before Shenmue 3 actually ended up being real I kinda wanted them (especially for Yakuza 0) to have some sort of side story/mission where you got to go up against the Chi You Men. Not sure if even Kiryu would have the skill to go toe to toe with Lan Di but it'd have been cool as an extra to fight him if a Shenmue sequel never happened.

*edit* Also, just had to comment on how awesome Yakuza 4's soundtrack is. Listening to it again now, and loving it - especially the final boss themes and Majima's remix.

Yes, definitely. There are plenty of stuff they can use and cook for RGG history spin-off. I'm sure they can find tons of good materials even in the same periods of Ishin & Kenzan.

First time posting.....
Played 3 a while back (one of my first ps3 games IIRC), enjoyed it.
4 free via psn but haven't touched it.
5 gonna pick up down the road.
0 was beated last week
6 and Isshin just came in via amazon.

If you buy the official Ryu ga Gotoku 0 80s greatest hits album, you can unlock a walkman (portable audio device) as an item in 0. You can listen to the music in this album when you equip the item in 0. I don't have this CD and don't know how this works though.

What the FUCK!?!?!?

This a thing?! Holy Shit Im buyin it now!
I FUCKIN LOVE Heartbreak Mermaid and Koi no Disco Queen!!

Was thinking about printing out the Ishin khhsubs walkthrough. Turns out it's 403 pages long. That's gonna be expensive.

Oh I know that its not the actual OST.
I just though that because I liked those two songs that I now want to actually look up japanese 80s music is all.
Sorry for the confusion

I'm torn between Kenzan and 0 for my next Yakuza game but those pics are making me consider picking up a copy of 0 and going through that.

Love these pictures. Shows off both how nice the graphical bump in 6 are, and also shows the changes to Kamuracho over the years. I do love how much Theatre Square has changed.

They spot on the difference of the street lights. The lighting are dimmer but warmer in 0. They are brighter & sharper but kinda cold in 6 (due to the transition from filament lamps to LED lamps?)

Oh I know that its not the actual OST.

I think that album got overpriced. You can find similar compilation albums (80s Japanese pop) at a cheaper price and playlists on spotify.

btw, Heartbreak Mermaid is a parody of this song (Sabishii Nettaigyo)

Oh god...I forgot that PS2 games look awful on HD TVs. I need to fix this.

Edit: Ok, Yakuza 2 feels good. Going from Kiwami to 2 should be easy. I'm not gonna play it until I beat Kiwami.

So far from what I've gathered in Ishin, is that Ryoma is the biggest badass that ever existed? Is that about right?

The story of Ishin is entirely a "what-if?" story. The beginning where they raid the place?

Real life Ryoma was supposed to have been assassinated there. But instead, he's one of the assailants!

So needless to say, they take a lot of liberties but it's still an absolute blast to play through.

Hey YakuzaGAF - just wanted to say my goodbyes...I'm leaving the family to going to go start an orphanage or maybe drive a taxi, but it's been awesome getting Yakuza 0 launched with you all and having Kiwami and 6 announced for western releases.

Don't fret over charts - Yakuza 0 was incredible, and the outpouring of community support here was truly a wonder to behold.

Special shoutouts to everyone in the community, especially Irishninja and Son of Sparda for spreading the good word of Kamurocho around. Couldn't have done it without you all, kyodai.

May your heat gauge be forever filled!
