Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Just like my
Brazza
hehe

Feeling kinda lost. I'm at the point in chapter 5 where
the old man who you're supposed to help by the bowling alley tells you to wait while he cleans the office. The game tells you to wander around but nothing happened yet and I lost the house.

Also, I feel like such a weeb for ling the song Judgement from karaoke ( ._.)
Judgement is fucking amazing.

Now Yakuza 5 had some stuff that makes you feel like a weeb for liking.

you can see a bit of crazy in ROUUUUGE OF LOOOOOOOOOOVE, YHAHHYAHAHHA LALA
Not good enough.

This is what Majima needed to be in the plot

I was slightly hoping they got some Chinese-speaking voice actors to voice the Chinese scenes, hearing someone who clearly can't speak the language mess up all the intonations and pronunciations really irked me.
I was actually slightly relieved in that one scene when Oda told Chen to speak Japanese in Kiryu's presence or when Makoto said she forgot the language so I don't have to listen to badly spoken Chinese. Tachibana's one line in Chinese is delivered surprisingly decently tho.

when i heard tachibana's line, i was fairly sure it was another voice entirely.

There is one thing about this game that I don't like.

Majima isn't crazy enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM3d266_QWw

complained about this earlier, & now, having finished, i still have somewhat mixed feelings. replayed yakuza 1 maybe a year back, &, man,
the majima that first shows up in that game definitely went through a few changes between the still pretty calm/warm version at the end of this game & then :) ...

Random question for anyone who knows. I'm currently finishing off the side missions in chapter 2, I'm doing the circuit racing ones. But i haven't got the right components and they're 10 mil a part now. Can I come back to this later? Or do i lose out if they're not done in chapter 2??

You can take your time.

Oh yeah, I never look up the pager.

I didn't play too much of 4 but he did seem more unhinged there. However there's a story reason for that here.
In 1 and 2, he goes fucking bonkers.

In 3, several families are too afraid of making a move in fear of pissing him off
as well as fearing Kiryus return as chairman would meant that Majima would automatically offer him support

Fair thing to remember in the first game Majima
almost gouged someone's eye out for disrespecting Kiryu.

Guy was a honourable psycho in his early days.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I never played 2, 3, or most of 1 but I loved Majima in 0. He's my favorite protagonist in a long time.

He's a good and noble guy, but manages to be shady and off-kilter at the same time. The substory where
he decides to forge a necklace for the guy's girlfriend and then gets mad at him for spilling the beans at the end describes him pretty well.

I've only seen videos of his crazier self, but I can only imagine that's Majima as viewed through Kiryu's eyes. You don't see any of the introspection you get with him in this game, and his relationship with Kiryu seems sort of like "older brother who still loves you but likes to mess with you". Certain people only see certain sides of other people.

He didn't get the title
mad dog of Shimano
for nothing!

And unlike Kiryu who was raised by Kazama and then had a
naturalised Dojima meaning he didn't need to get his hands as dirty
, Majima's boss was Shimano who we've seen in 0 is
a complete bastard, I think it's fair to assume he got Majima to do some shit considering he is Shimano's lieutenant :p

I feel like something is wrong with me. I'm at Chapter 3, and this game still hasn't really clicked with me.

I don't find the combat to be very fun - actually, pretty tedious - and I've never really been someone who plays mini games in titles. If I wanted to play a game of pool, I'd just find a standalone pool game. If I wanted to play Outrun, I'd play Outrun somewhere else.

I think the story is good, and I'm digging both characters, but I'm not finding the game interesting enough mechanically to keep me hooked.

Is this game just not for me? Or am I just not far enough for the game to really click? I've always been a mechanics over story person (though a game with a really good story, like Soma, can absolutely keep me on board), and this game just doesn't seem mechanically interesting.

You newcomers saw Majima on his first step to craziness.

Yakuza: Kiwami has him already having earned a damn PhD in insanity.

You can just skip all the optional activities and focus exclusively on the main story. The main story is pretty well done, with a lot of terrific characters and depth. My suggestion would be to try to keep going to see if the story starts to get it's hooks into you. Most people I knew were hooked by the start of Chap 3 with Majima's introduction.

I'll try that. I read a few reviews that said the game was great because of the side content, but I haven't really dug a lot of it. I really like Majima, so I'll see chapter 3 through.

Will I be at much of a disadvantage down the road if I skip the side stuff?

Edit: good avatar quote, haha

Very busy week at work so I only made it into early Chapter 2 so far. I'm actually going out of town this weekend on a ski trip with friends and we're all pretty excited, but when I turned the game off last night I was genuinely a little bummed I wouldn't play anymore until Sunday.

Also it turns out I don't remember anything about how to effectively play Mahjong.

I'm so happy that we actually have Yakuza back in the west again.

It wasnt' that long ago that many of us begged and rallied over the official Yakuza forum at SEGA. Right around after Yakuza 3 was released back in 2009-2010. Those were dark times.

I love it.

It's crazy to think that we waited, what, 3-4 years for Yakuza 5 and now we're getting three Yakuza games in about a year's time. (Y0, Kiwami in summer, and Y6 early 2018)

Hell yeah.

Top 10 Crazy Majima Moments in the series:

Casting Mark Hamill as him was pretty good in Yakuza 1 (for the only time in the series there was an English dub). Will be interesting to experience Yakuza 1 this time without the English dub like back in the day, haha.

Mainly if you skip the businesses for the characters, and you'll be at a disadvantage for the businesses if you skip the substories lol. It's a vicious cycle.

But if you "git gud" at the basic gameplay (just use the crowd control styles for multiple enemies and use quickdash against bosses) you should be fine.

The battle mechanics work, but they are locked in the beginning of the game.
Doing the side stories gives you a considerable amount of cash which can be used to upgrade your fighting styles. There's also a equipment that allows you to change styles much faster (IIRC, you buy it in the CP Shrine).

I would say stick to it until you reach chapter 6 or something like that. You open real estate and get the initial upgrades quite fast so the battle system should open up more.

Them references to Yakuza 3:

It would have been cool had they used some Shonen Knife songs in the game, especially karaoke. By the late 80's they were getting well-known even in the western underground scene. I guess they didn't have enough budget to license real songs though.

(For those that don't know, Shonen Knife was a punk-pop band from Osaka, kind of Ramones mixed with surf rock and 60's girl groups. They got well-known in the west when Nirvana took them on tour with them in 1992. This is their first album Burning Farm from 1983: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAYST2XNBdU)

Fair thing to remember in the first game Majima
almost gouged someone's eye out for disrespecting Kiryu.

Guy was a honourable psycho in his early days.

Not to mention (lite Yakuza 1&2 spoilers)

Brutally beating one of his goons for NOT laughing, when Majima gets hit in the head with a baseball.

Shortly there after, again brutally beating one of his goons for trying to stab Kiryu (Majima shields Kiryu from harm).

Then there is the whole bomb difusal thing in Yakuza 2 which still cracks me up to this day.

What the shit?

(Real Estate spoilers)
So, I did the Electronics King's Outrun challenge, and was supposed to beat 1 million points. I did 4 million points, and it somehow counted me as losing the challenge. What?!

Did typing in my favorite 3-digit name I use at arcades, "FUK" invalidate my score or something?

It's 5 million points you need. Luka's initial challenge that is 1 million, not Electronics King's.

Really crazed dog Majima is a pleasure to watch.

I just unlocked the cabaret minigame, and when combined with the real estate content I don't think I'm ever going to actually complete this game...

I took down Club Mars, making about 5 million more yen than they did (it's still so early in this minigame that I can't tell if that was a close victory or not). I'm also finding it harder to judge when it's a good idea to challenge a rival club to a battle compared to the rather obvious progression in real estate.

Yakuza 5
had that as part of the main story.

lmao, I'm looking forward to that then, just beat 0 and I'll start 5 tonight.

I've actually only played 1 back when it was released then 2 through 4 in anticipation for 0 last month. The plan was to beat 5 before 0 but I changed my mind right after beating 4, since I just wanted to see more of Majima at that point.

I'm in Chapter 11 now and just unlocked
the underground fighting racket. I am so happy to find out they got Lenne Hardt (aka the Crazy Pride Lady) to do the fighter introductions!

Met little Master Daigo. I honestly thought at one point I'd get to fight him.I love these little cameos.

Finished Property at last. I'm still working on all S ranks but that's just a matter of time rather than real work.

Befriended Mama from Serena. Am I right in thinking Mama is a transvestite? I remember from Y-1-5 a TV character that hung around in Earth Angel, maybe called Mitsuko(?), that always had a sub-story with Kiryu but I think she must have been a different character. Then there's the TV who coaches Haruka in Y5. They're all treated in a really straightforward manner iirc and them being TV or TS isn't focused on. As has been mentioned before the Yakuza series is really cool with how it doesn't judge anyone. Even some of the nastier 'bad guys' have had understandable motivations when you hear their whole story. I think the group who get taken the piss out of most is otaku and even then there are sympathetic moments. It's got a big heart for a game with some of the most brutal combat around.

Still a few more bits to do before I move on with the story (S ranks, levelling styles, etc). It's been the best Yakuza so far as far as the story goes (and I know I've got some huge twists to go from past experiences) and the Caberet minigame is without doubt my favourite of all the minigames so far in the series. It's definitely up there with 1&2 for my favourite Yakuza game.
