Famitsu review scores (3/1/17) - Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets perfect score (40/40)

I'm happy, but the fact that they gave FF13 and its sequel a perfect score too, makes this score feel less important.

Poor fella, spends his days being angry at Zelda on GAF.

I can't speak for the poster or anyone else here, but I personally have a strong dislike for the Zelda series (just isn't my style) so when I see how good this game looks, I feel jealous more than anything.

I likely won't ever be playing this game, but I know what it's like to be stuck waiting years for a game ("Winter 2014"), so I really hope this game turns out to be as good as it's looking.

The game will be amazing. But there are alot of zeldas in that list. I wish reviews were useful and not means to justify purchases.

Good to see, wouldn't mind a copy of that issue for collection purposes. :)

Whilst I agree that famitsu seem to give out some unworthy 40/40s, can you guys actually name a better pet simulator than before Nintendogs?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Alright bro...we get it...
lol

I really don't get why you wanna spend so much time to downplay reviews on a obviously very good game. It would be different if the game would get lackluster scores and impression from every outlet but Famitsu.. But yeah... Kinda seems pointless.

I love how Famitsu review scores are used to validate or invalidate a game's quality before it's release. I don't recall any other outlet regularly producing this kind of division when it gives a perfect score.

We are all aware of Famitsu's history and reviewing flaws, but at this point we only have 1 other legitimate review published and we are starving for more. This is why this thread exists and why we will continue to talk about it even though 95/100 of us knows this magazine is baloney.

If all the other reviews give this game moderate to low score then famitsu review is meaningless as most this it is but if every review is high score then famitsu review should be considered meaningful.

On the other hand i want that cover as a poster

What amuses me about this whole thing is that I can't help but feel like a lot of the folks talking down the review itself would be firing off plenty of snarky jabs had BotW received anything less.

Four people who played the game for a magazine thought the game was really damn good and worth playing. That's what it means. That's all it means. Everyone else's opinions and experiences will be their own to draw regardless. Good for BotW, way more games don't receive 40's than do.

Good to know it's as good as Nintendogs.
Nintendogs was a mind blowing surprise of a score to the extent that this happened:

I think this is the closest to an explanation
There are a couple of those vandalised thread titles leftover if you search which is proof this actually happened.

This list loses a lot of credibility with Brawl being one of the perfect scores.
I thought it was the Jojo game that might as well have reviews that read "let's just say it moved me, TO A BIGGER HOUSE" especially when you compare to it's metacritic power level of 71.

Of course you can't equate credibility with falling in line with critics as there are bound to be variances but I believe that is one of the largest (I did check, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is power level 79; Nintendogs, MH Tri, Kid Icarus are all low to mid 80s). Brawl on the other hand is in the 90s.

I read through, over the course of several days, the preview thread, the impressions thread, and this thread. It is quite funny how easy peoples minds are influenced even when they claim they are not.

When the previews dropped, I could not imagine the hype levels for this game going any higher, but they smashed through that ceiling. The funny thing is the hype levels started to drop, not because of a video or something someone said, but because the community scared itself by fabricating scenarios and creating disappointment despite the glowing feed back. In regards of the positive feedback, the hype went from "hell yea," to "it's Zelda hype" rather quickly.

With people finally convincing themselves, and the Wii U version (seriously, the Wii U version as a basis of technical feedback...) having been leaked, it's almost like a self fulfilling prophecy: people feel justified in their negativity towards the game...based off the Wii U version.

Now another review comes in, a great review, and more negativity. The review should be taken with a grain of salt more or less is what I'm gathering. I also gather, after 200+ pages over several days, that Zelda will review great regardless...so it's like this site is already dismissing the great reviews because it's a given? In addition, apparently Neogaf is waiting for that one review that will tell it like it is, that 6/10 or 7/10. Why? Will that truly be a reflection of the game as a whole, or will the assumed consensus? Or can we just take each review as an opinion piece instead, as I'm sure even the 10/10's will have their beefs with the game. We all know that 10/10 games are not perfect games either. Just means the best it can get.

I do realize that not everyone thought like this, but there were a lot of people who were from hype to no hype just from being influenced by peoples impressions, based off of impressions. The threads, parallel to each other, kind of played out like a story. In the end, I would say chill. If the game looks fun to you then look forward to it. Not every game is going to please every gamer out there...hence the reason why even 10/10 games are not even considered perfect.

Check cleared.

Edit: LOL are people actually defending Famitsu?
The explaining away of the three high scores the game has received so far is great. Tomorrow sure is going to be a fun GAF day!
I have no doubt many outlets will give Breath of the Wild high or perfect scores. It looks like a fantastic game.

But that doesn't make Famitsu reviews any less laughable. Their reviews, as mentioned before, are basically four blurbs stuck together. They're a glorified advertising rag.

Famitsu reviews mean nothing.

This is coming from someone who thinks Breath of the Wild is going to be one of the greatest games ever created.

I dont think everyone is questioning how good this game is going to be reviewed. No one is salty over the perfect scores (well, maybe a couple). People are discussing the impact famitsu has over it's scores. While its great to see it get a 40/40, its pretty meaningless.

Don't doubt the game is going to be fantastic, but lol at Famitsu scores. I feel a lot of people in here aren't familiar with how Famitsu scores are normally treated.

Only the 24th game ever to get a 40, out of how many games they've reviewd?, thousands no doubt. But yeah means nothing.. :D

"Famitsu 40s are bought" doesn't mean "this game isn't that good!", it literally just means "Famitsu 40s are bought".

Because Famitsu 40s are bought.

Famitsu reviews are shallow as fuck; their scores generally inflated; especially for anything popular, and they may not be the publication with the highest journalistic integrity. But the claims that their reviews are downright bought always seems like bogus. Do you really think Sega spent a ton of cash for the Bayonetta-review and 428 while Square Enix can't afford to do it on most of their mainline FF and other flagship titles?

Getting individual 10s from Famitsu isn't surprising, as all of the games with 40s are getting at least some 10s from other publications. The games they actually align on is what is shocking most of the time.

What was Famitsu thinking with the FFXIII score? Lol

Not XIII, but XIII-2.

I guess when it's the right game, Famitsu scores suddenly become trustworthy. Zelda has good odds at gettings its 10s elsewhere. You are better than telling yourself and others to take a Famitsu score at face value.

I did state that it was not everyone, but in the preview/impressions threads there's a bunch of the same people who just go where the hype goes, good or bad. I'm not into remember names, as I'm not an active forum type of guy, it was just an observation.

I'll leave this alone, though, as I do not want to derail.

They gave JoJo's All Star Battle a 40/40...that should be telling you enough. Although it is a good fanservice for the fan of the series, it is a pretty bad fighting game.

Not saying that Zelda is not a awesome game, but people really shouldn't take Famitsu's scores seriously, be it high or low. It's mostly marketing.
