Nintendo Switch | Hardware Review Thread

Even when not docked it needs 15v. I would rather have something that does charge decently for when on the go instead of having to wait an hour or two of down time. Only charged 8% while playing after 1 hour doesn't cut it for me.
That's wrong. The officially licenced car charger has a rating of 5 V / 3 A.

no no, of course you want it. I wouldn't buy a Switch without it, because the JoyCon Grip thing looks completely insane. But the Pro controller is $70, $10 more than the (superior-looking imo) MSRP on PS4/Xbone, both of which routinely sell for $40. Both of which work on PC too fwiw.
Eh PS4 controller has terribad build quality and an awful battery. Xbox one controller needs a wireless adapter and uses batteries.

I don't like compromises.

Meh @ PS4 complaints, I think it's the best controller ever. Sure more battery would be better, but it's a nonfactor in my life.

Xbox One S controller no longer needs a wireless adapter. it's standard bluetooth, and great.

Correction: The current model of the Xbox One controller does not require a wireless adapter. It has built-in bluetooth.

Carry on.

Only way right now is if your tv supports Bluetooth audio out.

This is going to limit my Nintendo night-time gaming unless I buy wireless headphones or run a long cord to the receiver. I guess it's too much to ask for a headphone jack on a $70 Pro controller. Not a surprise though.

That's awfully reductive of you.

Meh @ your procontroller concerns, it has many more features (gyroscope and HD rumble) and a superior battery (the ps4 baterry is very poor).

Off set sticks are always a positive too.

Surprised at how much reviews seem to be making so little of the sync issue and (most importantly) the appalling games situation.

Talking about potential is all well and good but if you're going to review hardware, review what's going to be in front of consumers now, rather than what might be in front of them in a year or whatever.

No.

Maybe in the future, but not at launch.

It's a real shame how the Activity Log went from being one of my favourite features on the 3DS, to being massively downgraded on the Wii U, to being removed entirely on the 3DS.

I've never been of the opinion that Nintendo absolutely, 100% needs to implement an achievement system (though it would be nice), but the complete lack of any sort of system-level record of the games you've played is a real shame. I love being able to look back on stuff like that.

PS4 would have reviewed rather shit then.

That's wrong. The officially licenced car charger has a rating of 5 V / 3 A.

remember folks... for charging speed, A is more important than V.

Some seem to insist that 2.1A is sufficient to charge while playing.. but it seems to largely depend on the quality of the charger, as it would seem not all 2.1A chargers are equal (likely due to the 2.1A being max output.. not constant output)

officially, 3A seems guaranteed to charge while playing.

I don't think the "games situation" should be reflected in hardware reviews. Let the prospective buyers figure out for themselves if there are good enough games in enough quantity quickly enough. I mean, for one, none of the Switch launch games have even been officially reviewed themselves.

I also don't know why so many people focus on the launch lineup versus what's coming over the next 8 months. April gives us MK8D, Arms likely in May, Splatoon sometime this summer, then Mario Odyssey probably in November. That's a really solid lineup of exclusives, even if there is minimal 3rd party support outside of indies.

Yeah that's what I figured. Awesome my 16000mAh xiaomi is 3.6A. I figured as much because it fast charges my Galaxy s6.

I'm glad that reviewers didn't feel obligated to tell people to go out and buy one. I'm still on the fence. I like new shiny things but in reality I should wait for a better catalog.

Let's see if the reasonable side of me can override the gadget fiend.

I really wish it had a virtual console at launch

You just made me nostalgic for my old Suncoast Pictures.

man... Genesis games were like el chupacabras in fall 1989. Best Buy = nothing. Video rental stores = Nothing. Children's Palace = very limited. Software Etc = very limited. It was basically Toys R Us, Suncoast Pictures, and Children's Palace in the Milwaukee area.

Its funny that Nintendo is marketing this as home console first, handheld second, when everything I know and read about it makes it seem like its a better handheld than a home console.

- Joy cons seems more comfortable while attached, rather than on the grip which is a bit cramped, Pro controller is better for console mode (according to reviews)
- Joy cons actually charge on the system itself rather than on the accessory grip (unless you buy the charge grip)
- Can't wear headphones if you sit on a couch 8-10 feet back while in console mode, can wear headphones in handheld mode (even on the Wii U you could wear headphones while sitting on your couch, a step back for sure)
- Zelda has performance issues while in home console mode, handheld mode seems to run better with a smoother framerate, textures seems lackluster on a big screen and unnoticeable while playing a much smaller screen

I mean, I'm okay with this being a better handheld but I feel like Nintendo should be marketing it at that if it works better as that and most reviews I read say its more impressive as a handheld rather than a home console.

Okay, wait, so if I just want to play the Switch until it's close to dying, hook it up to a powerbank to recharge, play a different handheld or read a book while it charges, then play the Switch again, any old Usb C 5V/3A will do? Man, I have no idea how to decipher any of this lol. How many Switch charges will I get per fully charged powerbank?

They are marketing it like that because the 3DS still sells while the Wii U reached end of life and needs a product on the shelves to replace it. Also, current pricing.

It's just pure marketing.

Eventually the Switch line will replace both.

Well I can probably tell you by Saturday if you're still on the fence. But DF seems to imply it should just work, also while playing.

Have you played a game on a 4K set with HDR though? It's easy to be underwhelmed playing a game at 900p after you've experienced higher fidelity hardware.

Talking general here, but this mindset is kinda annoying of "if you care a lot about graphics, you're a shallow gamer or something" they greatly enhance the experience and adds to gameplay significantly. I play Nintendo games because they are fun, and I'm fine with having fun whether that's on the go or on the screen. But it's also easy for me to look at Switch graphical display and be underwhelmed after spending so much time on higher end machines, just the nature of tech...

Yes I have a Samsung KS8000 and a PS4 Pro. It's not going to make me want to play BotW handheld just because I've played many other games in 4K or at least in resolutions above 1080p. The bottom line is I want to get the best possible experience for the particular game I am playing. To me, a 6 inch screen is not the best way to play. But I mean it's whatever, if people enjoy it that way then that's fine.

Did I miss the shitstorm? I figured people would overreact, but the reviews I'm reading seem mostly positive, despite the obvious flaws we're all familiar with, with the console. I'm so excited. Gonna attend the midnight launch tomorrow. 😊

My Xbox controller cost me £40 + £15 for rechargeable batteries plus £20 for a Bluetooth adapter. £75 overall. It's the hidden costs that take the piss, the Pro is overpriced too at £60 but at least once I have it then it's complete. My PS4 controller feels like a £15 one that cost £40, the build quality of that is laughable (as well as the battery) and I find that one way more overpriced than the other two.

About powerbanks I guess we'll have to wait for real tests with extended hardware or just try with your own and see if you need a bigger/newer powerbank

I still believe this is one of the biggest step forward for a Nintendo handled, no more worries on the go !

This is going to happen in a year or two.

60$ each, 110$ for the pair, 35$ charing grip

There wouldn't be a need for the grip if they just attach together ;)

I really hope the JoyCon sync issue is fixed with a firmware update. If not then I hope Nintendo replaces JoyCons.

If we don't hear anything by Wednesday and this issue is widespread I will have to cancel my preorder

I just saw the hardware at the Unity booth at GDC. It's fucking TINY, and oh-so-gorgeous. Legit shook at how small and attractive it is in person.

Seems to me with all the cancelling of preorders, it just might be possible to walk into a store Friday morning and be able to purchase one.

Oh? I did not know that. Never saw the info on it since it seems to have disappeared from existence.

It's right here, the description gives the 5V/3A output.

I saw that Blunty posted a video recommending 15V/2.6A chargers like the Razer for the Switch, I'm guessing that's where the confusion today is coming from. I like the guy's previous videos about the Switch but, while I haven't watched this one yet, I feel like it's misleading too many people based on speculation. I'm guessing that he came to that conclusion but we've seen that the back of the Switch specified 15V/2.6A input, but you gotta understand that's the MAXIMUM the Switch can take. It's entirely possible the Switch will charge faster with 15V, but at this point there's evidence that 5V chargers DO work to charge while playing games (albeit slowly) from both Rarez and Digital Foundry, as well as a handful of anecdotal reports over the past few days from previews. There's really only one or two reports of the Switch having issues with battery banks, and those are anecdotal and lacking much actual details. I'd rather take the word of the Rarez video and Digital Foundry article which both clearly state they were using a 5V3A USB-C port and got a charge while playing out of it.

Fortunately, it won't be much longer before all this confusion clears up. When I pickup my Switch tomorrow night I'll test it out with my 5V RAVpower battery bank right away to see if it charges the battery while playing Zelda and will report back about it.

Both consoles had a more desireable lineup of games and both consoles had their online up and working.

Listen I'm getting the Switch and I'm hyped as hell to play Zelda but this thing was rushed and is half baked. It doesn't even have the basic barebones features of the Wii U, no VC, the only desirable game is Zelda.

Quite frankly this should have launched in the Summer closer to Splatoon 2.

What where these lineups? I had Killzone (lol) for launch and nothing else. And for One I can't even remember. Here we have BOTW which surely will remembered for years to come and I also think that there are a lot of nice Indies with Snipperclips, Fast RMX and Steamworld and day one. Despite that I am a sucker for Bomberman^^

Im sorry for my lateness. But what exactly is this joycon issue? Is this only when playing motion reading games or just wide spread across anything you play? Like if I play Zelda with the two joycons seperate (one in each hand method, non portable mode) is this still an issue? Also is this only some joycons or is it known to be an issue with all of them?

This is very concerning. Always feels like first day consumers are guinea pigs for the hardware.

You know, the GC controller Joy-Con idea does plant the seed that custom controllers could be a thing for this for specific/niche games down the road. Different form factors, different layouts, possibly different buttons, etc.

My wallet doesn't like that prospect but my mind is already wandering.

Thanks! I knew info was sparse on other sites and some even removed it from their website. Forgot to check Amazon.

I am not saying a 5V won't work, but that it will charge a lot slower. I would prefer something that would charge normal rate while playing. The main thing people need to make sure is USB C to USB C as well as 2.6A or greater. They can do USB A to USB C, but it will reduce charge time even more. Also, I believe a lower A rating will cause issues down the road.

I do look forward to real world results on powerbanks, wall chargers, etc. for charging. I have held off on buying anything because of this. For now, my plans are an additional Nintendo wall adapter for home. For mobile use, I could get a USB C 5V / 3A, but worry the slow charge while playing will not be good enough for me. It might be good enough for others though.

Also, can someone explain to me (it was either in IGN or The Verge's review) why when playing the Switch docked with battery at 100%, it will drain the battery down to as low as 88%? When the battery is already as weak as it is, losing 12% when you wanna take your game with you is a large amount of your short battery life. Why does it do this? When it's docked and fully charged, why is it using the battery for anything?
Because lithium ion batteries shouldn't be kept at 100% charge. If anything, they should be kept between 30% and 80% at all times.

Our review is here. Honestly I'm pretty happy with the Switch. Someone telling you that you can play Zelda on the go and actually doing it for yourself are two completely different things.

http://press-start.com.au/reviews/n.../02/nintendo-switch-review-must-have-console/

It's going to take me a while to get it that I can take the system away from the dock and still use it because I'm so used to the Wii U. The console is actually the controller, it's what Wii U should have been they just tried to make it four years too early.
