GI.Biz: Indies on Nintendo: “We've been treated like royalty”

Nintendo needs the indies support more than ever because despite the number of "big" publishers signed up, I haven't seen anything BIG from any of them, ie a new Ridge Racer re-boot exclusively for the Switch, or Mass Effect Andromeda/the next Tekken, etc...

Yeah, Zeboyd not having heard back from Nintendo kinda sucks. Hope they fix that fast.
Looks like they're philosophy currently is to have fewer devs and support them really well. If they gave out a ton of devkits, support would have bee stretched thin. Sucks for those who didn't get selected, but it ensures a consistent high quality library on the e shop.

I'm ALL for a little curation to avoid the platform to go the Steam and Appstore route, but if this curation is preventing content like Cosmic Star Heroine from reaching Switch players, then fuck that.

Ok, this is pretty interesting to read for me as someone not convinced on buying a Switch. Having them court good indie devs, getting access to portable versions of new and exciting games, that is an enticing concept.

I guess Damon Baker got the message regarding Cosmic Star Heroine from all the replies to his latest tweet about that specific game. :)

Dunno much about Zeboyd Games, but why is Nintendo's support of indies being shat on because they failed to support this one developer? Or has it happened to other devs as well?

To be fair, hopefully this is just a temporary measure and they just want to spread releases a little better and give a bigger spotlight to devs who worked with them in the past (loyalty is important too).

That being said, it's so frustrating to see big companies like this still giving canned responses. Giving the same negative response, but in a more personal, considerate way goes a long way to build good relations with your consumers and partners.

Let's hope so! I indeed thought about suggesting people with twitter to start perstering him, haha.

Strap on your hooker ...
Obligatory post I'll make in basically every thread about Switch and indies:

Nintendo should treat those indies to support for getting their games physical releases. I'll happily buy games digitally eventually if it comes down to it (Snipperclips is a good example), but I'm much more likely to be there to support them sooner if the games that feel like fits for the Nintendo platform (like Fast RMX, Shovel Knight, Yooka-Laylee, etc.) get a premium physical release like Nintendo's own games do.

Especially true now that Switch is portable and I expect that my wife and I will own two to make the experience much more convenient. I don't want to have to rebuy games digitally to share them.
I'm tempted to counter this by saying that wide releases of indie games tend to be shelf warmers at most retailers, but given the pitiful amount of releases filling Switch shelves for the forseeable future, maybe that's exactly what they need. Having the appearance of a broad library that fills out some decent real estate at retail is an important prognosticator for the future health of your system, and at the rate we're going with third-party support, Switch games ain't gonna come close to filling up a sizable chunk of a case at retailers by the holidays unless they're double and triple-facing games.

I hope people at Nintendo would be able to google Zeboyd Games and see Cosmic Star Heroine, a game completely at odds with everything you said.
Eh, I like their games and I wish Zeboyd, as with any passionate indie developer, all the luck in the world... But Zeboyd's assets and artwork are distinctly on the amateurish side, even by indie standards.

If they cant get third parties on the system, reach a different market. They certainly are playing the best hand they can. I'm excited to see what local coop experiences they can get. Snipperclips was amazing.

Maybe their previous efforts, but they stepped up their game big time with Cosmic Star Heroine.

Good on ya Nintendo. I think I'm gonna double dip on some of the indies I haven't finished. I'd love to have a lot of the Indies I have on the go.

I'm ALL for a little curation to avoid the platform to go the Steam and Appstore route, but if this curation is preventing content like Cosmic Star Heroine from reaching Switch players, then fuck that.

The curation that's going on is probably looking to see if the game has sold well.

Probably the equivalent of port begging. Lots of indies aren't slated for a switch release. I'm not gonna claim Toby Fox is getting ignored by Nintendo cuz Undertale isn't coming to the Switch.

But then real trash like Vroom in the Night Sky makes it over? I am not quite sure what their curation standards are.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Baker talks about their philosophy on the latest IGN NVC.

Seems they want fewer higher quality titles. Felt they kinda got burned on the Wii U with some cheap terrible shovelware. Also wants to try and get games coming out on the PC, PS4, and Bone at the same time on the Switch vs 6 months after the usual platforms.

Plus if you are a port Nintendo hopes you at least try and leverage the system's strengths in some sort of way like for local MP or HD rumble.

Worth a watch/listen for people who haven't.

Well let's get going then! Where's Gungeon? You don't have to open the floodgates, but can you crack them open just a little?

I definitely think there's gotta be a balance between curated and letting the floodgates open, but solid indie devs like Thomas Happ need to be able to release their games on it.

I also think that Nintendo is concerned about the first wave of indies (the one in the last Nintendo direct) to sell before going bigger.

That's great, and they definitely deserve it. The indie lineup will be the backbone of software I purchase for my Switch this year.

I think CSH slipping through the cracks is easily explained simply because Zeboyd is a small outfit even by indie standards and Nintendo has no pre-existing relationship with them.

It's still a shame but I don't think it's anything malicious or arrogant as some people have been putting it.

Independent games are becoming a huge source of value for console makers. The amount of independent games vs AAA games is just too great to ignore. You can have a couple of AAA games a year on your console, but it's those independent sources that keep the console fresh and alive throughout all the year.

Offering great deals to those developers with great support and contracts is what any console maker must do right now.

IMO Nintendo is doing great in that aspect (as we saw in the Nindies "direct" with even some exclusives).

Only words until Nintendo tackles the big ones like Rocket League and The Witness.
Niddohg WILL be big if launched on the Switch, you can write that down.

I've thought for a while that this is an avenue that Nintendo ought to explore more; their offering fundamentally isn't positioned to offer high-profile AAA third-parties what they want, but they're ideally situated to court smaller developers and indies, if they handle it with care. I did notice in the Nindies showcase last week that they had a surprising number of indie games with timed - or in some cases, full - console exclusivity, which hasn't really been a thing for indies in the past.

Whether it works is certainly up for question - there's a proportion of the traditional gaming audience who wouldn't consider such titles who they're effectively sidelining by doing this - but I think it's something absolutely worth experimenting with.

One of the reasons I'm interested in buying a Switch is defenitly to use it as an indie machine. It seems perfect for it since you can enjoy the games on your TV or on portable mode if they fit that better. Bring all the indies Nintendo!

Cosmic Star Heroine has a pretty unpolished look to it imo. No surprise Nintendo doesn't want it as a showcase game.

Playstation did this in the beginning too, seems to have toned down a bit though...

maybe good for the launch of your system and then ROI starts to dry up when the market is flooded with so many games.

I think Sony should really make PSP2, that's b/c with Vita/PSP of course, seems like the handheld market really is here to stay.

Switch should get all the multiplayer indies to really sell the joycon local multiplayer (better than 1,2 Switch).

Gang Beasts
Mount your Friends
Overcooked - it's coming
Ultimate Chicken Horse - it's coming

Don't leave those indies behind.

Why no Kororinpa HD Rumble announcement yet??? Do it already!

I'm personally hella keen on cool singleplayer indies coming like Thumper as well. I'd rather play that on the switch in handheld mode than on my PC. I've been tempted to buy an Nvidia Shield tablet with some bluetooth controllers with a space for the tablet so I can chill in bed and play but I'm worried about input lag.

Uh, what? How did you get to that conclusion?

I made a topic about the other side of the coin where their initial stated plans were for a heavily curated experience, which was seemingly to only go for titles that already have a publisher, when the ideal scenario is to allow self-published titles.

This new article is much more reassuring in that regard.

It's really a great way to get good will with up and coming developers as well as a way to cement over any gaps in big third party support.

Agreed. Not to downplay others enjoyment of it but for all the praise it gets around here, it really doesn't look the part. Is there a demo?

Exactly, the high profile indie games like inside and the witness are missing. You only see the "Nintendo-like" ones being announced, the games that would resonate with Nintendo fans but not the more "serious" indie games.

Serious indie games like ...Rocket League? I feel like Rocket League would really, really resonate with Nintendo fans. I love Nintendo games, but Rocket League is one of my favourite games of the past few years. I would love a Switch version.

The Witness seems like a good fit too. I think a lot of us like puzzle solving.

Let them know on social media. I'm sure they would happy to know others want their games.
