Middle-earth: Shadow of War: First Gameplay Video

I don't know what tech they use for lip syncing, but just like the first game, it's incredible. I'd personally put it as some of the best in the industry.

Even though they had the executions turned on the combat seems the same but with more dismemberment and looks more satisfying, Im really happy for that.

Cant wait.

That's the impression I got at the end of the video, too, when it zoomed out and we saw the smaller 'encampments'.

Let's hope it's the case. Having an army-on-army battle in the countryside would be awesome.

Brad Schumaker on the GB video definitely confirmed the open world aspect being present and bigger than ever, and the individual zoned hierarchies, although my own assumption would be maybe more pocketed? Like the numerous regions adding up to way more than the two maps in the first game, but maybe each one not reaching the size of a map from the original. He also seemed unclear though in terms of some of the stuff that looked canned how much was cutscene or just how much you couldn't see the player activating due to a stripped off HUD for the presentation.

Having your army would be super cool out in the world, but I could see you just calling them in for a siege, and normal minute to minute gameplay being somewhat similar to the first game.

Looks like it could be fun, I enjoyed the first one, although it did get a tad bit too repetitive, so I hope there's more to this game than just base assault.

The world is said to be much larger so it's not strictly mission-based. I think what we've seen are missions / side activities you can do. That or to save you time from travelling from stronghold to stronghold (even fast travelling), they have included a carousel feature that allows to cycle through the the in-game strongholds to take over.

Yes, there is a fortress for each region. We will still have an open world, with missions, building an army and of course the story.

Impressive improvements made to the nemesis system. It was always the greatest highlight of the original game and it seems to be the case here as well. We'll see how intuitive it really is in a not incredibly scripted demo.

However, I can't say I found the combat all that captivating. It was basically just watching Talion one shot every single enemy with a kill animation with a rather silly looking boss fight. Even riding the drake looked a bit...stiff, for a lack of better words. But of course, alpha game play in a demo so we'll just have to see.

Pretty much my reaction too. What they showed looked AMAZING, but they have to include explorable locations too. If the game is just one siege after another... I'm not interested in that.

They made a big point of saying they were focusing more on the RPG aspects though, with armour that can be found and equipped. Hopefully there are a lot of solo locations, natural environments and ancient ruins to explore without an army at your back, that have treasure hunts and boss fights for new weapons, armour, skills etc. I don't need a big open world, but I need more than just siege events. Dragon Age Inquisition's approach of separated world spaces would be great to follow (though they don't need to be as large as the Hinterlands...)

For folks not scrolling up:

It is open world. There is a huge open world split into zones now which you travel between from the large map we see. Each zone has story missions, side missions, lore etc. and plays similar to the original game. Each zone also has it's own nemesis hierarchy. What we're seeing in the gameplay reveal is the cumulation of actions in a zone where you initiate a fotress siege mission to take control of the overall region. Think liberating an area of a normal map by climbing the tower - but much more indepth.
Or similar to the multiple take out the war chief objectives in the first game but blown up.

So the gameplay reveal was 10 minutes of cutaways to characters shouting things, plus a couple minutes of completely unchallenging combat and a janky-looking dragon ride.

The upgraded Nemesis system looks neat, but I am not really feeling this at this point.

Revealing a full gameplay clip just 5 months before launch? ,,, I love this Fallout 4 effect

Not a huge improvement on the combat + graphics sides but everything else is a noticeable upgrade from the first

I hoped some dev copy the nemesis system but it's great we gotta see it so improved again like this, hope the game gains some attention this time.

I'd like to see what they would be able to do with a wider colour palette.
This is just brown brown brown...

Gameplay looks amazing though. Balls to the wall 3rd person action RPG.

So looks like it's not really open world anymore and more mission based.

Or it's open world much like the first as you build up your army and attack each fort, in a build then attack, then rebuild and attack again series.

Looks like your army isn't exactly going to be a static thing with how quickly they were dropping named characters in an alpha demo with difficulty set to zero.

Looks completely nuts, which after Shadow of Mordor is exactly what I wanted. Fly completely off the rails to bring me that Orc trainer war game Monolith.

Gotta admit the part about riding the dragon had me hyped. It all seems rather scripted so I wonder how much of that stuff will be emergent in the final game. The initial trailer left me a little cold but this video restored my faith some more.

Thank you =D

No bother man, by the sounds of it, the game will huge. Only down side is it seems more ripe for dlc haha.

Another thing they told GB was that one could actually attempt a siege at any time when you arrive in the area, but it would be much much hard. This video is the cumulative of a bunch of actions eh sending the spy in, building up a team of guys with different skill sets and so on.

I wonder if you'll be able to ride the dragon across the entire world map or if that's just for battles.

The first game was one of the biggest surprises this gen for me. This looks to improve on it in pretty much every way. Visually it doesn't look up there with some other games in terms of fidelity, but they have expanded the scope significantly, so it is understandable.

If that DLC takes us to Minas Tirith I'm okay paying through the roof =D That would be one hell of a siege opportunity...

I think my only issue with this game will be the main character. He still looks dull and perpetually bored, even when he's staring into the eyes of a nemesis when they lock swords. I bet he's got earbuds in under that long hair, and he's probably listening to Coldplay.

Man when his follower snipes the Orc leader when he engaged in combat with him, I got hyped. I wish there was more of a graphical improvement over the first.

Why didn't Tolkien write WW1 flamethrowers into Lord of the Rings himself I wonder!

It may just be due to demo purposes, but the cutscene to completely unchallenging gameplay certainly seems to be fair out of whack.

Having said that a random thought occurred to me: The NEMESIS system is something Halo games absolutely should have developed into themselves and their sandbox gameplay.
The Halo games?

How would the nemesis system work with Halo?

This looks super interesting with the cinematics and dynamic stories but the gameplay shown looks overly simple in between the cutscenes.

I only played about 3 hrs of Shadow of Mordor and wasnt a huge fan of the gameplay in that either but at least that seemed a bit more strategic in the monent to moment gameplay. I know the player was probably playing on god mode for demo purposes but it didnt look like there was ever any risk of failing at anything.

This seems really, really exciting, but I am hoping to get some more variety in the environments from the first game. I know the focus is on the combat, nemesis system, and now army building, but I would love if they could incorporate a bit more of the world of Middle-Earth into the game to make exploration somewhat interesting as well. The two maps in the original game weren't terribly interesting, and the fortress seen in this trailer doesn't look too terribly different from them. I know the game is set in Mordor, which is not a terribly diverse or interesting place, but hopefully this entire thing being essentially fanfiction they could do a little more with it.

Well, looks like more of the same plus capturing castles and fortresses. I wonder if the game will be all about that + killing orcs the entire game again and if it is... I don't know if that's a good Idea at all. I mean, there must be something a lot more to this game and way beyond just capturing castles and fortresses + killing orks or else... it's just basically the same game + couple of new mechanics which don't change much... well, in my eyes at least. Also, can't say that the game looks better than the first one at all and it not impressed me visualy and in terms of art too.

Overall, meh.

I'm loving the idea of the Nemsis system being much deeper, even in terms of relationships with your orcs. Like they mentioned you could become actual friends with some of them, the one Orc showing up and sniping that captain for you, and the idea you could be in battle and one of them just betray you which they mentioned sounds awesome.

Really the systems in this sound really damn sweet.

The MC seems a tad bit OP...

It's kind of one of the themes of these games is how uber powered you are. By the end of Shadow of Mordor you could practically become a god laying waste to anything you fought. Some will like that, others not so much
