Mass Effect Andromeda Graphical Downgrade

I believe since The Order 1886 that I don't see as much concern on a game than in this one.

Even this is going to be a bad game or people have moved on from the franchise after 3 that they really want it to be bad.

As someone who loved ME3 I can't wait til tuesday and play Andromeda. If facial animation were so important to me I would have never played a single Biowere/Bethesda game in my entire life, I always thought ME characters were dead and never understood the appeal until I played it.

At the same time, looking back at the first half an hour of this and ME1, and I have to agree that all characters seem totally flat. The conversations seem so unorganic that there's no energy in the conversation.

Horizon wasn't very good either, same dead eye effect. It got worse the further you got away from the main missions. Good looking NPCs up until they opened their mouths

I completely disagree. I thought Horizon nailed the way eyes looked. I wish more games had eyes that looked that good and it elevated what would otherwise me not very good facial animation.

It's weird that it looks worse than Dragon Age Inquisition and that was cross gen.

I went super hard on Horizon's facial animations, but it looks next-gen compared to the bits I've seen of this.

Lol@ saying Horizon has bad eyes. Horizon, in fact, has one of the best eyes in games to date. Iffy facial animations? Fuck yeah but the models themselves and especially the eyes, are really fucking good and not just on open world standards.

But WHY do the faces look worse than dragon age? Is this just the slightly cartoonish physique, no I think it's shaders and detail in perplexion/wrinkles too... and it's only been a few months since I finished DAI, should be still fresh in my mind.
Maybe it's an overall style choice (that I so far don't agree with)? Can't believe it's purely for performance.

Okay your point? Like I said the Character models looked incredible, the animations didn't.

It looks better than Mass Effect, but it's still bad

You literally linked to the worst scene in the game, which is pretty much an anomoly due to the quality of the rest. And even within that scene, the animation is way better than Andromeda and it certainly doesn't suffer from dead eye.

It legitimately has some of the best eyes in gaming and the movement is pretty good to go along with them.

"good looking npcs up until they open their mouths" and yeah the dead eyes are noticeable in motion?

There's a massive difference in the quality. It's nowhere near similar. But having said that, I never once noticed any dead eyes on H:ZD. It's kind of impossible to ignore here since they appear to be non-reactive to light sources etc. It makes them pop in an awful way. I'd not deny the mouth movements could have been better in H:ZD, but they looks gens apart in other aspects.

I'm a bit disappointed that their animations have not improved from the previous games.

It actually got worse....a lot worse if you ask me.

I don't know how anyone who played Mass Effect 1-3 can say the facial animation in Andromeda looks just as good or even better.

To make sure I wasn't dreaming I actually start up Mass Effect 2 again on my PS3, and yeah, it definitely looks much more natural and detailed than the gifs we are seeing in this thread.

You're cherry picking. A side quest's animation work might not be to the same standard as main quests, and while that isn't something that I think should be the case, it is understandable. Furthermore, up until that point of the game, all cut scenes have been of a much higher caliber. Picking that video to underline a point you didn't even make, seen how you talked about dead eyes, is nothing but cherry picking to cover up a weak argument by making a different one.

You linked to the worst thing in the game though.

That represents 1% of the game, literally.

Mass Effect is like this permanently (and worse in fact).

Is it perfect ? No. Is it decent ? Yeah. Especially in terms of open worlds games. Plus the overall look of the characters is all wrong in Mass Effect, it's not just an animation problem.

edit :

You know what, you deserve it, come on, spin this :

I wonder what bioware peeps think if/when they see threads like this? Probably, oh well $$$.

As much as this thread has been fun, I kinda feel bad for the devs...
I'm still wondering how so much of this stuff is out there, actually in their game. Didn't they say they would take all the time they needed for it to come out good? I'm not saying the game is bad since I have yet to play it but some of the stuff is just too much... holding out hope for the day one patch.

That just looks like a change in lighting. seems more of a stylistic choice to me.

I don't doubt it's been downgraded, but that initial OP comparison seems like a bit of a strech.

Man. The presentation is really, really off. I actually went and rewatched the opening cutscene from the original Mass Effect and genuinely found myself thinking how much more competent it looked in terms of animation, camerawork, etc.

It seems like compromises had to be made to get the game out before the end of the fiscal year, and most of them came out of the cinematics.

Although, that doesn't really explain the variable VA quality and pretty wooden script; unless that was rushed too.
