RUMOR: Leaked art work suggest COD 2017 will be called ‘Call of Duty: WWII

If Treyarch is Black Ops & Sledgehammer historical CoD, then IW should make...

Having a hard time feeling any excitement over this whatsoever, but I guess now more than ever we need a game where we can shoot fucking nazis.

I'd like a campaign as the Germans or Italians with the same faux pas accents like they did with the old Russian campaigns of Cod 1 and 2.

Come on.. let me play as the other side for a change.

The inverse of my previous point: Do we really need a game right now where we empathize with fucking nazis?

How does a game featuring a playable Landser imply empathizing with the Nazis? Might it not, I dunno, present a raw look at the horrors perpetrated by that regime? A campaign from a German's point of view would allow the developers to explore the moral conflict a soldier might face between fighting, perhaps unwillingly, for family and homeland and serving under an evil despot.

It might. I could see that. But it also might not. I could see some people playing it for the wrong reasons and, more commonly, getting the wrong message.

I'm not saying there isn't room for that storytelling (I welcome it!). But in a world where a global Neo Nazi movement is burgeoning more than ever in subtle and not-so-subtle ways (in high level politics, no less), I'm not sure a game where you play a cog in fascist regime mowing down democratic Allies is needed right now. Unless that narrative sees you rising up against that regime. Which I doubt.

I'm not devoid of empathy for the foot soldiers who were swept up in the whims of a vile, carnivorous regime, fighting a war that they had no interest in. But that is a very delicate story to tell that I don't think a game where you are a voiceless avatar holding the gun is very likely to pull off respectfully in this current sociopolitical climate.

EDIT:

And besides, if the stuff in the OP is legit, it's all soldiers storming a beach. I'm no history buff, but I'm willing to bet you don't star as the guy those guys are aiming at.

Some people are saying its stills from saving private ryan. Can anyone confirm this? I hope its not a fake.

Even if they are, it could still be real.
concept style things sometimes pull stuff like that. Since they're never meant to go past internal viewing.

You're crazy if you really think they've been developing this game for 3 years.

Do you think CoD's are developed in a year? There's three separate teams making separate games.

Edit: I also wouldn't be surprised if this is fake. I do see them going back to WWII, but I doubt that's the title of the game.

You know.. I thought I was ready to go back to old wars games.. Bought Battlefield 1 excited for it.

In the end, I realised that I don't really care for it anymore. Don't like the weapons, vehicles, nothing.

So, if this ends up being true, it'll be a hard pass for me.

Traditional combat? No more exosuit jump dashing and crouch sliding bullshit?

Fuck yeah I'm back in baby!

Still hope they're planning on

Old, Modern, and Future. That way they can keep up the changes. Was getting old when we basically had three future-esque games back to back

Feels like CoDs are developed in a year 1/2 with how the games are always missing features.

Actually not. MWR was built on AW's engine since it's graphically the most impressive COD engine out of three studios.

And, no offense but artistically? IW looks alright but it's probably the least inspired looking out of the last three.

Erm just because MWR was built using that engine does not make it the best lol. It just means IW's engine was being developed alongside the game while AW's engine was already available to be used by a different studio.
In terms of tech Advanced Warfare is below both Black Ops 3 and Infinite Warfare (though Black Ops 3 looks the worst because its artstyle was a misfire), the latter two games are doing far more impressive things graphically with Infinite Warfare coming out on top because it does all of that while having a stable framerate and running at higher resolution than Black Ops 3 does. Some examples of impressive tech that you see in IW but not in AW per object motion blur everywhere, volumetric lighting, higher geometric density and larger levels, and it achieves much of that seamlessly without loading and does so at a good framerate/resolution...that is what makes it technically impressive.

And least inspiring? It has some of the most fantasy based locations out of all three games and you call it least inspiring.

You're crazy if you really think they've been developing this game for 3 years.

So you think Sledgehammer did nothing but slack off for 2 years ? lol ok

I'm kind of excited. I really loved the first Call of Duty and its expansion pack. I remember jump proning around the maps, until they nerfed it. Silliest shit ever. Got kind of tired of the generic future stuff. Future can be cool but not the way they were doing it.

If the developers want to grab headlines, there should a portion of the campaign dedicated to playing as a soldier in the Wehrmacht (not SS) in the Eastern Front...

I cant believe we're honestly at the point where people actually want WW2 again. It's like everyone forgot why we moved away from that setting in the first place.

I give it a decade or so before people start begging for modern/futuristic setting shooters to return.

A lot of COD players didn't like the futuristic setting and Activision possibly wanted to move towards a more familiar setting, but at the same time is "new" . During the last gen, a lot of people wanted COD to do something different and with movement abilities being popular during this gen, it made sense for Activision to jump to the futuristic setting.

However, with the diversity of shooters nowadays when it comes to gameplay we'll see if the sales are down because of the sci-fi setting and mishandling of some aspects or it is something else.

Won't be a decade, maybe 3 or 4 years max although cod will probably switch between various wars and someone will do modern warfare 4 as well

I don't know what features they're always missing. They seem to include a good number of modes, that increase over time.

Keep in mind the different teams have their own sets of features.

Marketing. They usually don't do more complicated stories similar to that due to appeal. It would also require a different story telling that is different than what the COD developers ever done. It is much easier( especially for COD) to play as a western centric character( usually a white American or British soldier) fighting in these cinematic levels against a clear cut bad guy. I wouldn't be surprised if your important characters die one-by-one like it happens in every other WW2 game.

I agree it would be interesting and could, but it would be a big departure for the COD developers.

During the air raids in England you transport yourself to the future after walking through a magical wardrobe. Lazers.

COD2 had a great campaign.

Like that shit suppose to be impressive to me?

It's still going to be filled with weapon lootboxes and 3 lane map designs. No matter what time period this game is their mp philosophy is awful. I think gaf is out of the loop on this one if they think it will actually be back to its roots.

That different paint job ain't going to cut it

It's too bad that most of the people that made Call of Duty 2 and its campaign so special are now no longer working within the Call of Duty universe and have joined Zampella at Titanfall (shows in their excellent campaign and multiplayer).

I'm cautiously optimistic but I don't think they'll nail the classic tone of WW2 Films/Games.

It isnt always May...
Maybe they reveal it next month

It's always the last weeks in April or first weeks in May, every since MW2.

Modern Warfare 2- Teaser in March, Full trailer in May
Black ops - April 30
Modern Warfare 3 - May 13
Black ops 2 - May 1
Ghosts- Teaser May 1, full trailer at Xbone reveal later in May
Advanced Warfare- May 1
Black Ops 3 - April 26
Infinite Warfare - May 2

I'm torn. I want this to be true - I'm not a fan of shooters per se but I love the setting.

I hope this is true - might be the first CoD game I buy for myself in years.

How this reads to me:

Publisher:"We're out of ideas, where do we go from here?"
COD dev:"Battlefield made a World War I game and it was really successful, why don't we do that?"
Pub:"We can't do that! We'll just look like we're copying them! Make it another world war!"
Dev:"So...World War II?"
Pub:"Sure, whatever, fine. Get to work!"

Who cares what the theme is, it will be 60$ game with full of dlc and p2w micro transactions.

No buy until proven otherwise.
