Mass Effect: Andromeda is the 3rd biggest UK launch of the year

I'm not going to downplay the decline in sales, but ME was never a juggernaut, the decline isn't as steep as many would think.
Dead Space was never a huge seller either, the second game sold somewhere in between 2 and 3 million?
Then Dead Space 3 came out and underperformed (or didn't overperform DS2 significantly depending on the PoV) that. We know what happened.
For EA, Andromeda is the lowest selling Mass Effect yet as they didn't pay for the development or initial publishing of ME1.

It's also worth noting, in Mass Effects defense, that most people I know are tapped out games wise by this point. The last few months have seen an unbelievable number of amazing games be released, plus the launch of a new console. I think most people I know have already spent quite a bit of cash on games, and whilst they would normally have bought Mass Effect they are putting it off for now because they still have a huge backlog of terrific games and the initial impressions weren't great.

This was not by any means a good launch window for a game that EA clearly weren't confident in. They should have pushed it back a couple of months, simply to give it time and distance from the January / Feb cascade of releases.

Despite critical acclaim, ME has actually not been a sales juggernaut. Even if you limit it to RPG's.

Dragon Age is the bigger franchise iirc.

Neither are that big. They're just critically acclaimed games that appeal to the people that discuss video games only (like Dark Souls for example).

Holy shit, this is savage!

Yeah, Andromeda certainly suffered coming out following all these good games. There was a certain subset of people on Twitter hyping it up that I noticed, but on the whole it seems to have been lost in the noise of Switch, Zelda, Horizon, even Nier, and it's doesn't have the mass appeal for more casual audiences.

ME3 sold rather a lot on its first week, the hype for the conclusion of the series was huge and the reviews were excellent. Not sure why anyone would expect ME:A to beat it even if it had got great reviews.

It still could be the second biggest launch including Digital since Digital is much bigger today but it's not a great result.

Horizon had a better launch than any Mass effect except maybe 3

How did it do relative to previous titles? That's probably a better indicator.

I'd be surprised if it bested ME3 tbh

Edit:

3rd best?

K, that doesn't sound great when you consider how the market has grown, and that ME1 launched on 1 platform and ME2 launched on 2 vs this being on 3

I'm assuming the week 1's are:
ME3
ME2
MEA
ME1
?

It looks even worse when you consider that Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 launch weeks only include X360 and PC sales because those games released later on PS3.

So the fact that Andromeda failed to beat one of those (probably ME2) while releasing on 3 platforms instead of 2 makes it look even worse.

Question. Did Horizon have a bigger marketing campaign than Mass Effect?

Any AAA game released in the last 6 months had a bigger marketing campaign than Andromeda. EA really cut their losses early on this.

Marketing campaign was nowhere near what they did for ME3 or ME2 for example, where you had TV ads running for 2 weeks.

I think they'll be lucky to get 2 million initial sales, including digital. Do you have a link to where they said that?

While discussing third-quarter financial results yesterday, Electronic Arts executive Blake Jorgensen revealed that the company is expecting the upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda to shift three million units in its first week. Jorgensen bases this number on the six million copies Mass Effect 3 sold in total, though he did not give exact details on the math behind the new figures.

Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Wildlands - which just came out a week or so ago - is currently 30% off on UK PSN and at retail. As a comparison.

Dead Space 3 completely bombed, while that might be true for Andromeda as well, we'll have to wait on that and see how much down from ME2 it was.

Although, "good news for the game" reminded me of the Last guardian thread, where the poster said something like "well something positive" in reference to the game performing better than past two ueda games despite getting outselled by Dead Rising 4. Mods took good care of that thread,The title change was hillarious.

Anecdotally I've held off purchasing because of the reviews and opinions from those on here. A single player purchase has to be excellent for me to consider it, and I'll wait until a patch/price drop before I pick this up.

I still haven't bought Horizon which looks excellent, and this is behind it in the queue.

Agree that we'll have to wait and see at least until we have the first week data from the US, but with the 3 Million first week sales they expected, I doubt that Andromeda's sales performance will satisfy the EA execs.

It will most likely underperform, I agree. But the severity of the underperformance is still unclear. Being below HZD and GR:W are not good indicators since they debuted higher than the vast majority of AAA games.

Bruno, did For Honor do over 100K its first week? I guess based on the ME:A news the answer would be no but figured it was worth asking.

It's just a poorly made game, which will always translate to lacking sales. Of course some core ME fans will let the glitches and animations slide, but most won't.

For the fans or for EA.

Both. Unless you are one of the people that would prefer the IP to go into indefinite hiatus.
It's EA, from still rather recent experience they do have a tendency to kill underperforming IPs rather than trying again with a new entry that tries to fix the critisized points from the predecessor.

Well, to be fair, EA did release a Dragon Age 3, but to be fair DA2 did sell better than DA1 did, at least in the first week. But DA2 also released 2 years earlier than Dead Space 3 and they had a change in leadership (including the CEO) in between, with the current leadership having been the one that killed Dead Space off.
