Ryan Penagos: Spider-Man releasing in 2017 on PS4 [Insomniac insists no timeframe]

Marvel pointed out that they were not trying to release the game the same year as the movie just to have that double promotion and synergy. If Spider-Man releases this year, it is because Insomniac put in work as usual.

Year 2017 ... brace yourself
Not a spidey fan but is that in game footage? Or the movie

Spider-man is not coming out this year. The Insomniac dev who posts on here alluded to it being quite early in development just last year. It has also barely been shown at all.

Detroit: Become Human and Days Gone are maybes. That said, I doubt any Sony first party games besides Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Gran Turismo Sport, and Knack 2 will come out this year. Third parties will carry the Fall.

KH3 is going to come after FFVII Episode 1. I will be shocked if it appears before 2019.

I dunno man, while this year is pretty laughable to hope for, I don't think there's any chance the game misses 2018. They've got a lot of the tech in a good place as evidenced by 0.2 - it's just about what crazy level of polish Nomura wants to shoot for / if they're going to let him do the entire 100 hour main story thing he was going on about a couple years back.

A lot of the (brilliant) core gameplay mechanics from Sunset Overdrive should transfer to Spider Man. I'm sure as soon as they finished SO they probably started working on Spider Man.

I'm not really a fan of comics but I'm looking forward to seeing Spider Man just for the graphics.

My skeptical mind says that that's some kind of target render.

But then again, not a single Sony exclusive as of yet has released pre-release footage that completely blows away the eventual released game. And even something looking close to that... My god.

Just like Sunset Overdrive but it had a short announce/release period as noted in the OP.

I knew it! I believed in you, Insomniac! Hyyyppe!

So you think Detroit, Dreams, Days Gone, God of War, Spider Man will all miss this year? And they will presumably have new games to announce for next year.

I would bet Dreams and Detorit at least have internal 2017 release dates, hence why they were put in that 2017 promo video.

honestly the trailer looks really good but not so good that it's unbelievable

I used to think of how the big games I'm prioritizing this year are all around March (Nioh, Horizon, NieR, Mass Effect) and how the rest of the year wasn't that big for me. But then this might happen, and according to Christopher Judge's Twitter bio, so will God of War. If these two turn out to be right, then holy hell, am I glad to be wrong about the rest of my year.

Whew. 2017 is shaping to be a fucking amazing year for gaming.

Yes. Lost Legacy, Gran Turismo, Knack and the remasters could be the line up for the rest of the year

But what if it does?

Anything's possible, but it is extremely unlikely.

Correct, yeah. Maybe Dreams will come out but I couldn't care less about that game. It'll flop hard too.

Like I said, Detroit is a 'maybe' too but I doubt it.

Uncharted: Lost Legacy, GT Sport, and Knack 2. Honestly, that's plenty since Red Dead 2, Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, and COD will be carrying the Fall.

During the height of a console cycle, Insomniac has always targeted to have a major release at least once a year, with few exceptions. So it always seemed like 2017 was a possible release window for this game, considering they're not talking about anything else at this time.

ITT: I think Spiderman will come out in 2030 because I want it to.

There's this weird thinking that there won't be any big Sony exclusives coming out later this year, third-parties don't have the sole purpose of selling a single console brand.

I believe either Spiderman or God of War will release later this year.

Why would they do that? We'll get RDR2, Battlefront 2, Destiny 2, COD WW2, some Ubisoft games like AC, a Bethesda game,... this fall.
Sony and Insomniac should just wait for Q1 2018 like they did this year with their major releases, the game will get more media coverage and overall mind-share.
Spidey is ofcourse pretty big, but there's no reason why it should release in holiday season. Sony also will have the marketing deal for pretty much all previously mentioned games.

Gran Turismo is a big exclusive

Marvel originally approached Sony in 2014, I doubt a whole year or more went by before Insomniac had gotten to work on the game, so they probably had solid portion of 2015 to work on this. Last year they offered a trailer with in-game footage that already looked a lot more refined and complete than games that did release last year. If it were to release this year having barely been shown at all up this point, that would hardly be unusual *coughs* Destiny 2 *coughs*.

Don't see Spidey happening this year, seems like too short a dev cycle of like what 2 years?
I'd love to be wrong of course.

Just like other posters have said, Uncharted LL, GT Sport and maybe Knack 2 are more than enough to carry things during the holiday.

?????

Still hoping they change up that logo on his suit.

It's coming out 2017, until the inevitable and obligatory delay announcement of course which sees it pushed into 2018. But otherwise it's coming out 2017.

Sony would love it though.

They definitely would, but I think they've seen the benefits of letting games cook until they're actually finished. Uncharted 4 was delayed, and has since won the majority of GotY awards and is the best selling game in the franchise. Horizon was delayed and its sold 2.6m in two weeks and has received critical acclaim. And while GT Sport isn't out, the beta is already showing benefits of its delay as last year there were reports of framerate drops and screen tearing, but now it's locked at 60fps.

Marvel is looking to turn their image around as far as gaming goes. At least in recent years the only really relevant Marvel gaming property is MvC. The Spider-Man games have been mediocre at best. So, in part Marvel signed with Sony because they want the IP to be treated like one of Sony's own. They're definitely expecting this game to have a Metacritic that's similar to the Arkham games. Which means that it'll cook as long as needed.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
I mean he is not acting like a insider , he already said where he works and is actively posted in the Spiderman threads. I think he will be alright.

I highly doubt he would be "alright" if he comes in here and confirms anything that isn't officially announced yet.

I think it is great that they are maybe aiming at late 2017, but I would not be suprised if it slips to Q1 2018. I honestly did not even expect the game would land in 2017.

That is a bit too much for one year lol

Nah. We had awesome Q1, but Q2 and Q3 will be slower.

There is nothing wrong with Sony [at last] placing few of their exclusives into Q4, especially if they want to provide some competition to Scorpio [which is only a mid-gen refresh, it should not change much in the overall landscape].

It's coming out 2017, until the inevitable and obligatory delay announcement of course which sees it pushed into 2018. But otherwise it's coming out 2017.
It's not coming out in 2017 until it is officially confirmed to be out in 2017. Let's wait until E3 to see what will happen.

Ryan held a meeting about Spider-Man a few days ago...

Which makes yesterdays pronouncement all the more credible.

I won't complain if we get it earlier, but I really hope they're not being rushed by any kind of marketing plan or whatevs.

After Sunset Overdrive I'm convinced Insomniac can nail the movement system in a Spiderman openworld, if they don't get caught in an impossible schedule.
