Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

No, and no again. I'm still reading everything. Where does it confirm that it's Polaris, and not Vega? I have no problem admitting as much, but please show me where it has been confirmed. Not too difficult a request. :)

Oh wow, then I stand corrected if so. Link plz :D

Project Scorpio specs GPU:
  • 16nm Polaris-derived GPU 40 Compute Units at 1172MHz Memory:
  • 12GB GDDR5 memory
  • CPU: 8-core "evolved" Jaguar CPU at 2.3GHz

Yea, like you, I know some of those words too
Ahah even thought I don't know exactly how their API works I have some knowledge on this matter. I know how taxing it can be computing on the CPU and then send it to the GPU so doing this is well thought. I think so anyway.

That would be amazing and I'd be in day 1. :)

Yeah didn't DF say they expected $500? Would make sense for it to be $400 for the PR win, they wouldn't let DF lowball the price. Honestly I'm not seeing anything that would put the costs far above $400

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Didn't need to be E3 levels obviously. But they didn't even show what we can expect games to look like on this new hardware. Look at how Sony showed off the Pro. The Forza screenshot was nice, but give us some footage of it and compare it to the XBone version. at least give us a time when we can see them.

Definitely would have liked more examples and stuff side-by-side. I know it is coming, but it still would have been nice to see here.

I assumed as much haha. I just had fun trying to understand exactly what was being said from a non tech perspective.

Would be cheaper than I expected. I'm still saying it's $500. People always lowball estimates and end up disappointed.

You seem upset.

He spreads misinformation in the previous threads and makes bets like it's gospel.

And comes into the thread and doesn't watch any of the videos posted before hand then assumes he's still correct?

Sheeet just finally getting to go through all the stuff. I wasn't expecting this many articles. I literally did as I said I would and CTRL + F to check for zen lol. Alas not in there, but so far sounding like a complete beast. Mandatory options for all gamers regardless of, I believe, TV etc is also a positive thing.

I'm loving all the detail. Seems like they really did a lot of work on this thing. That GPU is almost certainly sounding like it could be Vega (although not done reading everything), but so far I'm surprised I see no dig down on that info. I'm guessing they can't give us more on that till Vega is actually out or something?

Can't wait to get my hands on this thing!

BTW I made bets with folks. So PM me with what the terms of those bets were, and I will make good today. I don't go back on my word. That's my Ninja Way! :) Links would make it easier

Didn't you have an insider that was claiming Zen? I could have sworn that that was one of the reasons why you were so confident.

Explain this to me like I'm 5.

It's a good hardware. That's gonna make native 4k and 60fps in some games (such as Forza 6) and can greatly improve everything else. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it will downsample higher resolution to 1080p, so your 1080p screen can still notice IQ improvement (but this downsampling thing someone else has to confirm, cause I don't understand much about it).

I reality Yes.. for Native 4k No.

Scorpio isn't going to have issues hitting native 4k resolution on Xbox One games with the same settings.

I expect quite a few native 4k games. People are thinking of this as PC Ultra settings at 4k, when consoles don't run games with Ultra settings.

Sure there will also be lots of games that aren't native 4k but it isn't going to be super rare

So is 6TF Good?

On a pc is 6TF good?

All a matter of perspective and opinion.

My opinion would be that 6TF on a console in 2017 is fantastic.

On a PC, that'd be equivalent to the ~$240 RX 480.

Nvidia's latest offering is 11.3TF for $700.

What's good on PC and what isn't is largely a function of how deep your wallet is...

Explain this to me like I'm 5.

The Scorpio is like Pikachu compared to PC GPUs being Raichu: it is inferior in raw power compared to the top-of-the-line PC GPUs, but the love poured into Pikachu's training makes him capable of beating the Raichu!
Beating top PC GPUs to some degree, at least

Of course Sony may mention new hardware "in the works" at this year's E3 but they aren't going to give it a name, features, price, eta..

If anyone thinks Sony is going to come out and say "Playstation 5! blah blah blah" this year or maybe even next are kidding themselves.

Sony made their play with the Pro, now it's Microsoft's turn.

You gotta keep in mind that even though Sony and MS both will have released their mid gen consoles by the end of this year, they are BOTH most likely working on PS5/XB2 alongside the development of Pro/Scorp and will not allow each other to beat them to the starting line for true next gen.

So no, Sony is not going to have anything major to counter the scorpio until the true next gen hits whenever that may be.. it's just going to be the way it is for several years to come.

Let's solve this the old fashioned way, avatar bets :p

Leeh and/or hanspampel, would you care to participate in an avatar bet? If it's zen, you pick my avatar for the next two months. And If it's not I'll pick yours.

Also Senjutsu

I know this wasn't directed to me but is this still up? Because I want in.

Ready to honor that bet Chobels. Which game do you want? Will literally grab it now.

Quoting for those who didn't read all articles:

From what I've seen so far, there is some evidence that Scorpio's true 4K performance could pose a challenge to the likes of Nvidia's GTX 1070 and AMD's Fury X-class hardware. I've seen Microsoft's new console running a Forza Motorsport 6-level experience locked to 4K60 on the equivalent to PC's ultra settings - cranking up the quality presets to obscene levels was one of the first things developer Turn 10 did when confronted with the sheer amount of headroom it had left after a straight Xbox One port. Out of interest, we tested Forza 6 Apex with similar settings at 4K on GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080. Frames were dropped on GTX 1060 (and a lot of them when wet weather conditions kicked in), while GTX 1070 held firm with only the most intense wet weather conditions causing performance dips. Only GTX 1080 held completely solid in all test cases. It's only one data point, and the extent to which the code is comparable at all is debatable, but it certainly doesn't harm Scorpio's credentials: Forza 6 Apex received plenty of praise for the quality of its PC port.

Yeah, it's just on one game, but that game was a stress test with higher settings than the Forza 6 Apex PC release, but on that test Scorpio delivered the performance of a 1080.

It's supremely impressive what Ms achieve there.

No they won't mention anything for another gen I can 100% guarantee that. They will show the redesigned slim PS4PRO or whatever it is there is a patent for that had it's own thread a while back could be another PS4 slim, but I think someone said it was more than likely redesigned pro.

downsampling on the pro makes everything look crisp and without jaggies. everything feels like a CGi movie because there is no shimmering, no rough edges, it's so clean that you will want to make love to the tv screen.

i bought a 4k tv a month after buying my pro and tbh the downsampling was more impressive to me than the 4k resolution.

Are these really impressive specs compared to the ps4pro when its coming out a tear after... Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like maybe 20-25% improvement over the ps4 pro.

So is 6TF Good?

On a pc is 6TF good?
That depends, exclusives can tailor their games to the hardware.....However, don't expect all games to be at 4k or that there wont be framerate dips or that all games will automatically have 16xAF.....Don't expect a huge boost over PRO by and large.....over XB1, certainly.....

For the love of God can anyone clarify whether or not 6tf is good?

It is. 6 TF is enough raw power to easily bump 1080p titles to native 4K, and due to the magic Microsoft has poured into Scorpio's architecture, they might even be able to promote 900p titles to native 4K. It is a significant improvement over the OG Xbox One (more than 4.5 times in raw power specs, and is several times more powerful than the OG PS4 as well (almost 3.5 times).
