Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

So is it just a Jaguar or not?

It sounds like there has been customization, but I don't see details on the exact specifics. I'd like to hear more about those details.

"So, eight cores, organised as two clusters with a total of 4MB of L2 cache. These are unique customised CPUs for Scorpio running at 2.3GHz. Alluding back to the goals, we wanted to maintain 100 per cent backwards compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox One S while also pushing the performance envelope," says Nick Baker.

The new x86 cores in Scorpio are 31 per cent faster than Xbox One's, with extensive customisation to reduce latency in order to keep the processor occupied more fully, while CPU/GPU coherency also gets a performance uplift.

I think the issue with calling it "just Jaguar" reduces the significance of the work they seem to have done around the CPU (some of which directly to the CPU, and in other areas that offload CPU tasks/reduce commands to the CPU to reduce overall CPU load).

I don't think it's misleading to mention these things. But I do understand your point about how people can become confused - although I'm not sure that is DF's fault really. Nor do I think they're doing it purposefully to mislead or give MS free advertising.

This stuff is rather complicated, especially since it's very early and no one has a system to break apart yet.

It's pretty simple to follow the CPU upgrades. Actual footage below -

Links? I want to see lots.

I'm absolutely not bothering to link to any of the various rabid Xbox fanboy sites out there mixed in with the misterxmedia's and the crap gamer's or the game faqs of the world...you can look back through the past few years of nonsense on Twitter, or YouTube comments, or wherever else you want to look if you would like

CPU is still Jaguar but a bit modified. MS mentioned something about DX12 commands included in CPU. Still i3 performance?

GPU and RAM is OK but CPU slowdowns the console. Its exactly the same as with PS4 Pro. Now's the time for Sony to release PS5 for 2019.

The digital foundry article has a few paragraphs on this exact topic. It discusses the "extensive customization" and additional hardware to offset CPU demand and improve CPU performance over the CPU in those consoles.

The "extensive customization" they described is just the command processor every modern GPU has. PS4 had two of them. This also marks the third time MS has claimed they're solving the draw call overhead problem on Xbox One or are we forgetting the revolutions the "mono driver" and DX12 SDK were supposed to bring?

It also follows the same script as the Xbox One hardware disclosures where they tried to create the impression that standard GPU component were some kind of "secret sauce". This would be OK if DF didn't fall into the same trap of blindly repeating everything they're told because they don't actually understand the tech well enough to challenge the Microsoft narrative and provide important context.

Long story short, Scorpio is an Xbox One Pro with Jaguar and Polaris level architectures that Microsoft is desperate to package as something more interesting because they managed expectations so poorly.

As a bunch of folks that are very interested in console gaming, I don't understand how we can't all be excited about this info. The machine looks to be a beast from a console point of view and even DF, one of our primary sources of tech evals, believes in it as well.

I'm super thrilled by this thing and will purchase day one. Can't wait to see how both old and new games take advantage of the tech. Also, can't wait to see more about the console.

The skepticism, accusations against DF, and general fanboy bullshit are disappointing. If you prefer PlayStation that is fine; the pro is a great machine with great games. No need to shit on Scorpio because of that.

I hope they can speed up the os more with all that ram and stuff. Switch been spoiling people (yes I know the switch has less is features as of now but it's still a lot faster than the other consoles navigation wise).

i'm pretty hyped for scorpio. pro owner here. but hope the price point is very competitive.
being without a 360 anymore, i wouldn't mind looking back at the 360 titles and suped up x1 titles.

I keep thinking of getting another X360. I have an original model that is super loud even after cleaning it out. I need a way to play Ninja Gaiden dammit.

when the majority of one of the videos = MS says this MS says that. MS says, MS reckons

I'd say obviously the exclusivity has affected how Richard is covering this. Eurogamer/DF might be covering this but almost everything we're hearing is MS PR.

At least it's being attributed to a source, so you're free to be skeptical if you'd like, rather than being presented as objective, witnessed with ones' own senses fact.

Anyone worked out the dimensions from the render? Hard to exactly tell but it does seem similar sizing to the S model.

Well, that's all they have. They don't have a machine to breakdown or games to test and compare. They have a small amount of information that MS gave them and they are giving it to us. I for one am happy we are getting anything at all. The alternative is sporadic leaks with no verification. I'll take MS PR for now.

So why didn't leadbetter ask if this Jaguar is more than just an upclock, which would inherently improve process latencies and such anyway?

Like how he absolutely asked how Albert and his fellow suddenly found double the bandwidth available from ESRAM?

Very very very dissapointed with the cpu being again the jaguar "evolved" lol. For the rest looks very good but i would prefer to be more powerful and pay 600$ for the console like i did for the ps3. Looking at the specs is easily 450-500$ at the end of the year but df says 500$. Well, if the console would have a better cpu the price can go to 550$ or 600$ that i would pay very happy. I'm going to buy scorpio for 500$ but i prefer to pay more with a better cpu :/

Bruh, do you expect df to grab the og vhdl and pore through CPU Sims they run themselves?

Agreed. How can a group be so threatened when they are enjoying Horizon and Persona 5? Or Nier?

I guess it is not enough that Sony succeeds, MS must fail.

At $600 it better be next gen

So after having stepped away from the hype train and slept for a good 8 hours, I'm getting kind of skeptical of this reveal. Particularly the Forza screenshot. Why is a screenshot of the starting line of a racing game w/ an FPS counter their only evidence of performance? How hard is it to record a 20-30 second clip of gameplay? The screenshot is just... weird.

Frankly, there's really no reason to believe they are any more customized than what is in PS4 Pro. Technically Jaguar is a 28nm design, so just shrinking and clocking them higher on a new APU is "customization".

Lol I cant believe we are arguing about the integrity of good-but-nothing-amazing advances that can be made in a year. With maybe a bit of extra effort gone in on top.

I'm pretty sure that one of MS's goals will have been to right the wrongs of the XB1 and actually make a decent system again. Just like the first two consoles.

Hopefully we'll get that soon. DF saw it running and stuck to 4k60 from 55% to 88% gpu utilization.

But yeah, I want to see vids too.

did you just read what you're saying?

So much awesome information today and people arguing about DF being bias. DF isn't the one who built the console in collaboration with AMD, Microsoft did. So DF of course has to take Microsoft's word for it on customizations and changes they made to their own hardware, as well as whatever process they went through to get there. Also it isn't like it isn't stuff that can't be easily verified by developers that DF talks with.

The proof is in the pudding, and it's starting to look like Microsoft may just end up doing things with Scorpio that people never thought possible without them going for even bigger hardware upgrades.

Went to EG and oh boy... i felt like i stepped inside MS's church (specially their "Scorpio made simple" article) surely they got paid?... but anywho. So it basically pretty much confirms what was hinted at correct?, can't say that i'm surprised at all (neither in a positive/negative way) we'll see what they have in store for E3.
