Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

I am liking what I am reading about the scorpio however it comes back to the games and not so much the hardware. I am aslo wondering how long each console cycle will last if Sony and MS follow the mobile phone manufacturers (and other appliance makers)

I am not meaning to single you out but is it really hilarious to have a hampster on a wheel going so fast it flings the poor animal out after many high speed rotations?

I'm no PETA supporter but that gif looks rather cruel..perhaps we can have a gif of a toddler on a treadmill trying to run at high speed and being flung off for shits & giggles too.

Most of the biggest and/or best games are multiplatform anyway. You could almost view Scorpio as attempt by MS to compensate for their sparse first party selection by creating the premier platform for console multiplats

The "extensive customization" they described is just the command processor every modern GPU has. PS4 had two of them. This also marks the third time MS has claimed they're solving the draw call overhead problem on Xbox One or are we forgetting the revolutions the "mono driver" and DX12 SDK were supposed to bring?

It also follows the same script as the Xbox One hardware disclosures where they tried to create the impression that standard GPU component were some kind of "secret sauce". This would be OK if DF didn't fall into the same trap of blindly repeating everything they're told because they don't actually understand the tech well enough to challenge the Microsoft narrative and provide important context.

Long story short, Scorpio is an Xbox One Pro with Jaguar and Polaris level architectures that Microsoft is desperate to package as something more interesting because they managed expectations so poorly.

This is an awfully familiar story. I think it was from 2013.

Ps4 Pro owners are laughing now at future Scorpio customers. Yes, we have almost the same specs for a long time now. Just wait for PS5 or stick with tablet CPU for 4k gaming in Scorpio.
I love the smell of console wars in the morning.

It's jaguar in the same way Nintendo switch has a custom GPU...so it's basically a jaguar just with higher clocks. Why bullshit because people who care about specs will know regardless.

So after having stepped away from the hype train and slept for a good 8 hours, I'm getting kind of skeptical of this reveal. Particularly the Forza screenshot. Why is a screenshot of the starting line of a racing game w/ an FPS counter their only evidence of performance? How hard is it to record a 20-30 second clip of gameplay? The screenshot is just... weird.

DF is breaking things up. An in depth video of their visit to T10 is incoming. As well as another just for the GPU etc...

The point of the screenshot was to show the performance with all the cars on screen, which is a stress test as more cars on screen is a bigger performance hit. DF did see more of it too, not just a screenshot.

Remind me what stops Microsoft from brining a successor to Scorpio down the line?
They are already few month late with Scorpio which isnt a Pro killer. Its just a bit better than PS4 Pro. To me its a dissappointment. This gen should end soon. We are still limited with poor CPU. Unity, rings a bell?

So Jaguars really can't go above 2.1? Interesting. Didn't know that.

I knew it!! Zen baby!

Kidding, relax :)

Well, Jag architecture can go to 2.4 in turbo mode

The A8 6410 from AMD has 2.4 GHz turbo.

Where do people get the 2.1 max from anyway...are they thinking the CPU in the Scorpio is not a Jaguar...

When the die shots come out, it will show the CPU of pro and scorpio look the same, one is just clocked 10 % higher.

They are ahead of schedule, actually. But hey, what does the head of Xbox know anyway amiright

Agreed. How can a group be so threatened when they are enjoying Horizon and Persona 5? Or Nier?

I guess it is not enough that Sony succeeds, MS must fail.
Or that at the fact they look to be pretty expensive for what they are offering. It may be better than what they have shown but I'm Pretty dissapointed by it especially when it probably will be 499 or higher. I would have been equally dissapointed in sony if the pro would have been 499 as well. I just think it's a mistake for them to be pricing it anything more than 399 and ive said it constantly since scorpio was announced.

All Scorpio games supersample down to 1080p

Neat

This was cool news, along with support for Freesync and forced 16xAF. This thing is really tricked out I'm impressed.

Ryse looks really nice with 2x2 Supersampling, 16xAF, and Very High(Highest) textures. It's a substantial jump over the blurry XO version. Scorpio should be able to handle something like that no problem.

Desperate? They've been playing offense with this console the entire time. What expectations have been mismanaged? 6TF, 320GB/s, 8 CPU cores? What?

So Scorpio DOES use liquid cooling?!!
Yep. A vapor chamber is a first for a console. It's crazy as hell.
Microsoft are stretching the hell out of the truth to say this is "a first for home consoles". The original PS3 used heat pipes for cooling, which is the same method as Scorpio. The only difference is in the shape of the vapor container.

Hovis method confirmed.
No, the "Hovis method" has nothing to do with cooling.

The picture of Scorpio screams premium build quality. ...I would also bet the Scorpio comes with a 2TB or bigger drive at least at launch.
It looks premium partly because it's a CG render, with perfect lighting gradients and no grubby skew angles. Also, the PCB is black, which conveys "classy" without actually meaning anything.

The only announced configuration is with a 1TB drive.

Anyone worked out the dimensions from the render? Hard to exactly tell but it does seem similar sizing to the S model.
From what I was able to calculate, I'd predict the Scorpio will be about as tall as One S, the same or just slightly less wide, but deeper by a good amount. This is based on some assumptions that may turn out incorrect, though.

Any news on what this will do to current Xbox one games? What about backwards compatibility?
Every Xbone and 360 game will benefit from the increase in power and performance... Oh, and every Xbone and 360 game you can currently play on Xbone will be playable on Scorpio.

Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't come out and call it a super-charged PC architecture, altered to make it better for gaming.

Went to EG and oh boy... i felt like i stepped inside MS's church (specially their "Scorpio made simple" article) surely they got paid?... but anywho. So it basically pretty much confirms what was hinted at correct?, can't say that i'm surprised at all (neither in a positive/negative way) we'll see what they have in store for E3.
They didn't pay DF shit, Richard would gladly verbally fellate Xbox at no cost.

We don't have all the details yet though.

They could throw in an Elite controller.

They could even offer a couple of SKUs.

The gap between the pro and scorpio is bigger than the one between base ps4 and xbox one

So lots is two? and nobody I know has any respect for misterX, we actually think hes a sony boy making xbox fans look bad,
Oh Jesus Christ...you're blind, or in denial if you've never read the ridiculous stuff out there about DF being biased towards Sony this gen...just like the same was said last gen, but instead by Sony fans...

Christ Almighty, just search around the web for how many Xbox fans think GAF is some sort of Sony hive mind

Here...just a Google search away

Hell! I didn't even need google! Just a couple posts above this one!

Similar to what Eurogamer has been doing for Sony for the last decade.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 games running on Scorpio benefit from:

1. Smoother performance (within the games' frame-rate targets) and no screen-tearing
2. Maximum possible resolution on dynamic titles
3. Improved texture filtering (16x anisotropic filtering)
4. Scorpio GameDVR support (up to 4K, 60fps, HDR, and the ability to select individual frames for screenshots)
5. Faster loading

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...-five-ways-your-existing-games-will-be-better

This is not true. Only games that are failing to meet their resolution and framerate targets will automatically benefit. All others will need to be patched.
I'm speaking in general terms- games will benefit in some fashion... Load times will decrease, etc. Could have been clearer in my comment though.

Cringe post after cringe post. This has to be a secondary troll account lol.

Well, DF talked as if this was something novel and they were impressed. Your not. I'll go with DF on this one.

I'm sorry that your expectations were crushed but the Scorpio is actually a pretty powerful machine. It's remarkable, the engineering they have poured into it.

Ummm, it won't be able to record HDR!

The downplaying of it is laughable. That sounds like a pretty nice change. The Xbox One almost certainly didn't already possess that, or else I don't see Microsoft talking like it's new.

The thing was punching in the same league with GTX 1070. It was the heavily optimized Forza engine, but that is fucking impressive when compared to the PC Ultra 4K equivalent. Damn impressive. People once laughed at the idea that this thing would be in the range of 980/TI much less 1070. Not every game may have these amazing results, but those results are damn impressive.

Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't come out and call it a super-charged PC architecture, altered to make it better for gaming.

Well fucking said. They absolutely loved that shit when it was about PS4. And then we have people talking about Sony and hardware as if Microsoft of all fucking companies has no idea of innovation in videogame graphics. I may be mocked for this, but I will borrow from Penello here, cause it's fucking true lol. Microsoft is responsible for a thing called DirectX. They know what the fuck they are doing in the area of graphics and optimization. The suggestion from someone in here, they know who they are, that somehow Microsoft has absolutely fuck all know how in this area is bizarre, desperate and sad.

Yup, there is no special customization and no secret sauce. When it comes to companies making noteworthy hardware customizations in the console space, that usually comes from Sony as they are a hardware company.

In this thread, we already have people claiming that the Scorpio is more powerful than the gtx 1080, lol. It's been really embarrassing coverage from digital foundry. Let Microsoft advertise their products by themselves. What we don't need is df trying to pass a paid ad as fact. I can't till the die shots come out from chip works.

Look, the Scorpio looks to be a fantastic piece of kit for a mid gen upgrade but it's just an rx480 and an overclocked jaguar. It's not more powerful than a 1080 or 1070 and once third party games drop, it'll be clear for everyone to see.

All I've seen today is the same pr nonsense we've seen with other consoles. Fp16, huma, power of the cloud, dx12 patch, and now it's a special dx12 co processor which is just a regular command processor. It's just sad and annoying.
