Destructoid: "Duke Nukem in Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is a Big Failure"

Gearbox is like that fresh stand up comedian that saw Bill Burr and George Carlin and think they just need to swear to get a laugh without any sense of timing, sentence construction or flow of speech.

Actually, Duke Nukem in 2017 seems lame as shit in general.

Why does anyone still care about Duke Nukem? Talk about a relic of a bygone age.

The same could be said about Doom prior to the reboot.

There's nothing wrong with the character of Duke Nukem, just the way he's been portrayed since Duke Nukem Forever.

The delivery of voice lines and all around characterization of Duke since DNF has been extremely different than his original portrayal and in my opinion waaaaay worse than the original. He seems like a joke taken too seriously now whereas he was just a joke in general in 3d.

Well, I think Duke's cool, just like Doomguy and Serious Sam.

It's just Gearbox being fools and mismanaging the franchise
Doomguy didn't have any character prior to Doom 2016 and Serious Sam isn't so serious. Duke Nukem is just a fucking asshole I don't want to ever see again. I feel embarrassed that I had a slight fondness for him growing up.

I'm not really getting the hostility towards this, it's a harmless mode intended to add value to an overpriced remaster, it isn't meant to be a full on Duke Nukem remake. Gearbox aren't going to bring all of the voice crew back in to make the script specific to Duke Nukem. You can argue that Duke shouldn't even be in this but I don't see the harm, seems like Gearbox are aware of this too judging from this Destructoid quote:

"While this might be initially funny (with Duke asking, “Who the hell is Grayson?”), it becomes a big problem later down the line. Like I said, Duke has a huge ego, so he would never stand for not being addressed by his actual name."

If they called the entire game "Bulletstorm: Duke Nukem edition" I might see an issue but as it is there's hardly anything wrong with this. I have a problem with the pricing of the game though

Looks like Gearbox finally delivered a good game with Duke in it

Accurate.

Really weird that Duke DLC costs more than I paid for the original game.

He's only an asshole in the most recent games though like I said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Alot of games change the way their characters are characterized between entries but the difference between how Duke is portrayed in Duke 3d and Duke Nukem Forever is one of the biggest I'm aware of. The closest example I can think of is the portrayal of Frank West from Dead Rising 1 to Dead Rising 4.

It also costs money so... yeah.
If it was little free bonus for everyone like it should have been, no one would say anything.

So I liked Bulletstorm and after giving it some though, I went to PSN to buy it for $60. Now, I know it's "only" $5, but man did seeing them charge anything for the Duke DLC just rub me the wrong way. As a result I did not buy the game.

It's the first time I've been that offput by something, and I bought Infinite Warfare's macho edition with all dlc and MW:R just to find out I'd have to rebuy the MW:R dlc.

Duke was always portrayed as the dude you still love regardless of his lame one liners and crude humor. A game nowadays just needs to throw him under the buss without trying to justify him.

I'm a huge Duke Nukem fan (yes, even DNF) and Bulletstorm is awesome too, but this looks just awful. I really hope that's not the end of either franchise.

That's kind of what I meant about him being a joke since 3d but in Forever it's like he started using his one liners as a code to live his life by lol

I also think theres a big difference in tone between Duke 3d and Forever. I'm not 100% sure but I believe that the people that wrote Duke's characterization and dialogue in Forever are not the same people that wrote it for 3d. I get the impression that the people that did the writing for Forever had a very different sense of who the character of Duke Nukem was and rolled with it. I 100% agree that Duke in Forever is literally "Asshole, the character" but he doesn't come across that way in 3d. In 3d he comes across as a cheesy action movie hero that makes bad puns while kicking ass, like Roddy Piper in They Live or Ash in Evil Dead but in Forever they intentionally made him as unlikable as possible. It's like they decided to make him the definition of a misogynist with 0 redeeming qualities because that was their opinion of what Duke should be even though it's really not how he was portrayed in Duke 3d.

I think the Frank West comparison is very apt as Frank West in Dead Rising 1 and Dead Rising 4 may as well be entirely different characters, but that comes down to how the studio in charge decided to portray their iteration of the character.

Duke Nukem is the guy from Duke Nukem 3D.

The one from Duke Nukem forever is known as Douche Nukem

Is Gearbox like an actual joke at this point? Other then Borderlands, everything they have made after has been totally half ass and lame.

But it doesn't add value. It's a extra Dlc you have to pay for. There is no value added to the remaster whatsoever. If it was included by default I'd agree with you.

I wish so much that Gearbox would just give Duke to someone who actually cares. Hell, I wish the same for most of their properties. Gearbox has been on a roll with these disappointments.

The said thing is they could have easily just went full joke dub with this but instead they half ass it and sometimes have Duke act out of character to avoid being clever with the script.

I found it better that the lipsync is fucked :D makes duke much funnier, really having a blast with the game again.

Really deserves a sequel in this post wolfneworder/doom4 world...

Duke deserves a game on the scale of Doom 2016 as a true sequel to Duke 3D.

Gearbox has no right to own this character among other things.

That would've been hilarious to stick Duke in and have the other characters simply not know of him. Even better if he'd strike out with the ladies.

Oh, so they just swapped the model and didn't even adjust the lipsync? Hard to believe that this was one of their big marketing points.

Fucking hell Gearbox, get your shit together. A full priced remaster of a mildly forgotten last generation title? And then offer half assed DLC for additional money on top of that? Goddamn. After Battleborn and some of their other failings you'd expect them to up their game for some goodwill/sales.

I actually want to support them as they are one of the few AAA developers actively supporting split screen. But seriously. screw them, they need to go back to the drawing board and hire competent higher ups. Otherwise, I can't see them survive that long in this market, not even with Borderlands 3, since there are more games tapping into that market these days.
