Mario Kart 8 - Switch vs Wii U comparison

People keep forgetting the RGB full color range is going to help a lot also.

Getting mine for 47.99 + 5% off with my prime card. Happy to pay for battle mode.

In the video there is constant stuttering at the left side. Maybe youtube is messed up on my system i can't explain it if i'm the only one who sees it. Mario Kart on our WiiU is smoother.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the Wii U footage looks choppy in comparison (exaggeration, but it really seems to stutter). I was one of those distracted by that duplicate frame before, so I wonder if it's me noticing it very well now due to a direct comparison...

You are not the only one. It looks choppy for me too. It's not like this on the WiiU.

That Wii U footage is really terrible! Capture card/YT issues? I always thought the Wii U's duplicate frame issue was blown way out of proportion after that DF analysis. I have yet to find anyone who had been complaining prior to that point. I remember saying you'd have to be looking really hard/intentionally to notice a duplicate frame every 64 frames - at which point, you are no longer truly playing the game, but rather, looking for flaws. I don't remember the Wii U game looking THAT stuttery. If it's so jarring because of the direct comparison, then I may own all those guys - who I felt were overreacting - an apology(
umm no, more like a: "take your gosh damn cookie and piss off!"
). I'm gonna have to replay this game to see.

[Edit: Nintendo Life did say this within the comments:
"Apologies for the re-upload, there was a big problem with the latter half to the video showing the Wii U footage at only 30fps for some unknown reason. We found a workaround and now it should all be good. Enjoy!"

Not sure what they meant by "a workaround," because it could suggest that what ever method they used(barring recapturing the footage entirely) may have introduced more stutter than the game actually has.]

I'd wish for a digital discount but with BestBuy GCU or Amazon Prime, I'm not gonna complain too much since I won't be paying MSRP anyway. I do wish I would get a discount for digital because like many others here with a WiiU, I'd be willing to wager most of us bought the DLC and tried to keep the WiiU afloat.

Man I was gonna skip Deluxe but I kind of want to buy it now. I still have the WiiU version though, anyone know where the best place to trade it in would be? I was hoping Best Buy since I have GCU but there trade in value is atrocious for MK8.

Amazon is offering $15 for it

It baffles me that anyone would skip Deluxe on the Switch even if you owned it on the Wii U

Game is amazing

Values dropped pretty hard after March ended. Amazon was $26, but that has nosedived to $16. Gamestop is $17 w/ out pro, and 20% extra if you trade toward MK8D so $20.40. Ebay might be your best bet, but it doesn't really look too great looking at what's there now. Doesn't look like you'd get much more than GS, if that, but at least it'd be cash. If you know anyone with prime, MK8D is $48 so not a bad upgrade fee.

You're really baffled as to why someone who spent $60 on a game two years ago wouldn't want to spend $60 to buy the same exact game again two years later?

I am. But I certainly am not baffled why someone wouldn't.

Did a quick comparison video, too. Youtube compression doesn't help much, but the red on Mario is more vibrant on Switch thanks to the resolution boost. I think the Bowser stage showed in the second half shows the boost better than Rainbow Road 64.

Being able to change Kart in the Online Lobby without quitting will be a godsend!

Also, Wireless Mode has 1p and 2p?!

Maybe after asking for ages if 2 people can play on the TV and another on their own Switch...my answer has came!

Do we know what Miiverse stamp rewards for beating time trial ghosts / clearing cups with certain characters have been replaced with yet? Those were fun incentives to play single player in the Wii U version.

It's pretty similar to a GOTY Edition though right?
Not really? I can't think of any GOTY edition that has had exclusive content to this degree before?

If Wii U owners could download a Battle Mode update for free then you'd have a point.

Maturity, bitches.
I've probably had my fill on MK8 and I can always put in my Wii U version when I fancy a quick go. For me the only factor for MK8DX is the portability. Battlemode might be neat to try (that new cops and robbers mode could be fun), but I've preferred the racing for a long time now (since the SNES days time).

Would it be nice if Nintendo gave me a discount. Sure. But when I got MK8 to begin with they gave me a free game, which is turn gave me £5 for the eShop thanks to their digital games promotion, which I could use to get the DLC for even less. The tshirt and keyring I got with the blue shell LE were also nifty. So I basically I got my money's worth and loyalty discounts with the original in some ways.

Basically, if there's a rare promotion to get this for £30 I'll probably double dip, but I'm happy to pass.

That isn't the resolution boost, it is the color mode from Wii U not translating to RGB Full. Set your monitor to Limited range and the colors on Wii U will appear vibrant.

Switch still has the better dynamic lighting, tho. Gives a better sense of space.

Yeah the far away details look so much better on Switch. Looking forward to playing this, and hopefully, against fellow Switch owners.

Best thing about it of course will be popping the kickstand out and handing a joy-con to a friend or coworker so they can give it a try

The game was one the prettiest games in the market when it came out outside of IQ so fixing that and improving performance is pretty nice. Should be a treat for anyone that didn't play the original.

It really was. One of the premier examples of art style over horsepower, and it still looks fantastic today.

I agree completely. I actually wanted this a lot, but I'm not buying the same game again for full price again. The only substantial change is that they added a real battle mode- which was supposed to be there in the first place and only wasn't because they had to rush the game out to save the Wii U. They owe us that; I'm not paying $60 for it. Other than that, it's just a couple of characters and a few tweaked mechanics. And don't forget you're going to have to pay to play online now.

I don't understand the defense force over this; this is why Nintendo does stuff like this. Because their fans will still buy in droves and even defend it. I just don't get how you can be so happy to pay a full $60 again for essentially the same game at 1080p. It would have been totally fair to give an eshop discount to those who own the game already on Wii U, and I think it would have helped make Switch itself a little more appealing to sell the game a little cheaper to everyone and make it that much easier to fill out a good launch library. I'd still love to buy it on sale, but Nintendo doesn't really do those, so...

They owe you a battle mode? You understand how utterly stupid that sounds right lol?

And it isn't the same game. It's the same game + all DLC + new mechanic + new characters + battle mode + resolution boost.

Now you are free to put whatever value you want on that, Nintendo feels it warrants full price, but to say it's "basically the same game" (while amusingly listing some of the changes I might add) is pretty silly.

We paid $60 for what is essentially the same game 3 years ago. Plus another $20 iirc for the DLC.

So yes, I do think Nintendo should have offered the game at a cheaper price for people who bought it on the Wii U.

Hell, I don't think a port with minor upgrades should be selling for full price at all tbh.

Like many people I never owned a Wii-U so can't wait to get this, when combined with the amount of content there is, the price doesn't bother me too much.

This does run at 1080p docked right?

Agreed. I'd say it's most comparable to the remasters/definitive editions of games that were ported between 360/PS3 and XB1/PS4 and added new features along the way. Like Dmc featuring rebalanced aspects of the game, new tweaks, etc. or the remastered version of The Last of Us adding a Photo Mode and commentary (which AFAIK were not in the original). MK8D's situation is arguably at a different scale and with a different price, but the core idea is the same (an old console version not getting the new features).

The entire thread and the vid in the OP is about how this is 1080p.

I can't watch the video as I am at work, and I read half of the first page and there was no mention of the resolution on the Switch.

A simple 'yes' would have sufficed.

If I have an item already, like holding a banana behind me, then drive over a single item box, does it give me a new item or do I have to go over the double item box?

Nice strawman. Nobody is singling out Nintendo for this. Multiple people have criticized it as a bad practice in general.

I (and I'm sure most people arguing the same points I am) wouldn't have bought any of those games at full price either.

This has to be an issue with the video capture on their end, because MK8 runs so much smoother on Wii U for me. If there are any frame drops on Wii U I can barely tell, and I am really sensitive to that kind of thing.

on the actual gameplay, won't double items be game-ruining? or game balance ruining?

One thing that MK8 Wii U got right was that -- with twelve drivers -- the items tuning was finely balanced. ie you couldn't dole out a barrage of items because you couldn't keep an item in "reserve".

All I see is a comparison of two games with the left side being blurrier and choppier even though they should each be nearly identical movement wise barring the occasional 59fps jerkiness.
