Mario Kart 8 - Switch vs Wii U comparison

I don't understand the notion that Nintendo are greedy bastards because they'll release MK8 at full price when there's a WiiU version.

my memory is a bit blurry but I remember "The Last of Us" releasing for PS3 in June 2013 and just a year after that they released, the remaster on PS4 at full price.

nobody said a thing, people where in fact hyped to see the improvements, I don't remember people saying "I deserve a discount copy of that cause I bought the PS3 game, I won't buy otherwise"

anyone who felt like that could, you know, keep playing their PS3 copy, noone forced them to get an upgrade. you guys can keep playing MK8 on your WiiU.

get over yourselves people.

Seeing Switch Lego City Undercover at full price on the shelf with the Wii U Lego City at $20 right next to it is quite a sight.

Owners of Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts, Black Flag, Injustice, Minecraft, etc for PS3 got a steep discount for the PS4 versions (like only paying $10 for it).

PS3 was supported for 8 years+

I would still be playing the WiiU version if they added battlemode dlc.

--something about the wiiu version just looks off in this comparison

The general arguement was "I owned a 360 last gen so I didn't have a chance to play it" which is very much the case here for a lot of gaffers who didn't have a Wii U. There's certainly a double standard.

I think am very slow today.... I can't make any sense of what you are writing, sorry.

"people owned a 360 so they didn't have a chance to play it"...you mean TLOU? MK8? no idea.

They didn't have a PS3, only a 360 where Last of Us wasn't available...they got the chance to play it with a PS4.

Remastered version doesn't make sense for WiiU. But battle mode dlc does. Unless your only consideration is how will they sell more Switches right now, which seems to be Nintendo's position and not even that well thought out. An upgrade path would have helped but they went the milking route. And making sure customers got their money's worth for buying into a console they put out would make it more likely that people buy their next one down the line.

My apologies I probably wrote it weirdly.

I meant TLOU, people would often say "I didn't have a PS3 last gen so The Last of Us Remasted is my chance to jump in" which is a fair statement, the same is also true for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a lot of people on GAF (and in general) didn't own a Wii U.

This actually looks pretty great! The game is really looking Sharp in 1080p. I don't have a Switch yet, but this will probably be one of my first purchases when I do get one. I wonder what the odds are that we see other Wii U ports like this one down the road, though? Say, Smash Bros. or Super Mario 3D World?

Mario Maker too. And pretty high I'd imagine, doesn't seem like they have a lot else prepared.

Is there even a single person in this thread pointing out that it would be nice if existing owners got a discount that is being rude about it? It's not an outrageous or baseless observation. Basically everyone in here talking about it understands why Nintendo would release it full priced. It's people talking about how everyone should "get over it" that are being far more aggressive and outspoken (at least in this thread).

TLOU isn't the best example... Because it launched at a cheaper price. Oh and plenty of people at the time did talk about it. But whatever, double standards and all that.

Tropical Freeze and Pokken seem the most likely to me.

Donkey Kong Country has a history of being ported to handhelds, I believe Tropical Freeze is the only one that hasn't.

Pokken on the other hand didn't get any of the new characters that were added to the arcade version, we'll either get a sequel or some kind of "Arcade Edition" on Switch.

Probably going to catch some flack for this, but I just don't see enough to warrant the deluxe version & the $60 price tag.

It is kind of sad that there have been no announcements or My Nintendo coupons for those of us who bought all of this stuff before.

They still have all the old Club Nintendo data, and they have everyone else's eshop records. They could/should have done something to entice owner's of WiiU game some more.

I get it, I know other companies don't do it, but it that doesn't make it any better or excusable. It would just be a nice gesture to show those who have supported Nintendo in the past that they appreciate it.

As is, I am glad that some will get to enjoy this for the first time, and happy for those who want to double dip. I can wait on the sidelines because I don't think it a good idea to support this kind of business practice, even if I end up in the minority.

I felt extremely strongly about this for a while, until I remembered that when I bought Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, I got Pikmin 3 for free as part of a promotion. Obviously this doesn't pertain to everybody, but I'm not personally in a position where I can be incensed about it anymore, as that promotion was pretty damn generous.

I still think it would be nice if Nintendo offered a discount to people who own a digital copy of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U (physical owners are harder to identify, and they also have the option of selling their copy), even if only to people who didn't take advantage of the same promotion I did.

Looks identical except for the higher resolution. Which is fine, and as expected.

BTW, why is the Wii U version so hitchy in the video? Bad capture, or is that how it actually runs? Is it the framepacing issue? Was that never fixed? I don't know know how anyone could not notice that, looks terrible. I've only briefly tried this game on the Wii U, but I don't remember it being that bad.

Trade in the original and the new one is like $20 tops.

If the price is an issue you can always wait for a sale or deal. I got Mario Kart 8 for $40 CAD. You don't have to buy it at launch. It would be nice if it was cheaper but meh. All DLC + Battle Mode + Comunnity feature is enough to make me double dip.

People will buy it full price so you charge full price.

I would say the odds are pretty high, since the Wii U had a fairly low install base, there will be many purchases from the people that never got a chance to really play the games. The downside to this is anyone that supported the Wii U throughout its life will see a bunch of games they have already bought and played fleshing out a library.

They should really offer incentives and discounts for curent owners of their digital content that is rereleased with slight graphical enhancements and/or ~$15 of added content. It is really starting to feel like being an owner of the Wii U, I was really just beta testing a clunky version of the Switch and I will have to buy the same library all over again.

Mario Maker too. And pretty high I'd imagine, doesn't seem like they have a lot else prepared.

That would be great. Way too many people never got to play the Wii U's best games, and as a Wii U owner myself, I'd certainly like to have a few of them to play on the go.

thanks for explaining.

I think that all remasters, up-ports etc, are a case-by-case thing and people can re-buy or not if they want too.

Every game is a particular case.

Wind Waker HD for instance doesn't have a robust online feature like MK8 and won't need constant updates so maybe nintendo saw it fit to price it lower, their investment for that game is over as soon as it hits stores, whereas MK8 (servers, updates) will need to be checked on for years.

bottom-line, people should asses the situation and buy if they see the value and not buy if they are happy with what they currently own.

In the world of consumerism "I bought an older version of this product so I am entitled to have a discount of the newer improved version" it's rather the exception and not the rule.

sorry didn't know about that, I stand corrected

Looking good though i've gotten quite used to playing it at 4K in Cemu.

Going to buy this for my niece so i'm just curious, how easy is it to toggle the driving assistance mechanic, do you select it on the character select screen or by pressing pause during races?

Also my issue with porting 3D World are these levels:
2.jpg

Multiple levels in 3D World depend on the touch screen. There's one level (that I can't find a screenshot for) that is entirely touch and microphone based, the Switch also doesn't have a microphone. What would they do for the touch screen segments, make you undock it? That would kind of disrupt multiplayer. I'm not sure 3D World is viable.

If only Nintendo would start a paid online service......

Gyro pointing to simulate touch? Should work pretty well.

Said it before I'll say it again:

Best MK in existence with a full fledged battle mode, a handful of new characters/karts, and portability all make this well worth $60 for me. Don't want it, don't buy it. I get the sentiment that a discount would be nice, but it's not an industry standard by any means for situations like this. I got a HUGE amount of longevity out of MK8 (second most played game on my Wii U), so having the game with more content on a platform I'll be using with more frequency than my Wii U is a no brainer.

This game comes out the same day I finally get my wifi hooked up in the apartment, so I will be going HARD online that weekend.

They can do work arounds. Its not really a big deal honestly. A lot of the microphone touch stuff is pretty non vital to 3D World

I get where you're coming from, and I initially kinda felt the same way when I saw tons of PS3 exclusives getting ported over to the PS4. But really, looking at it now, I think it's a win-win for everyone involved where remasters/ports are concerned. So many people who missed out on all those awesome Wii U games will have a chance to play them now, and we also have the option of playing even better versions of them on Switch, although we could also just as easily pass on them as well. There will also be plenty of new games coming to Switch alongside these Wiimasters, and I'm sure Nintendo will have plenty of surprises at E3 as well.

I agree that discounts for people who own digital copies of these games on Wii U would be a great thing, however. It is a shame for those of us that already have these games to have to pay full price for them on Switch. I'd say wait for a sale, but it's Nintendo, so...

With mario maker and the touch screen instead of making you undock and redock...they could release a mobile app... (they won't) but they could..

actually playtesting levels would be hard without a phone mount...which wouldn't make sense as it would directly compete against the switch lol

I guess it's okay to play mario maker mostly in handheld while you're in the creating mode. I actually much prefer handheld but I know people that aren't a fan.

MK8 is one of the most polished game with one of the most active online community on the system. Saying it feels like you were 'testing a clunky version' is a bit too much, man.

This video comparison is completely botched. I downloaded and watched the 60fps file frame by frame: there are many duplicate frames on the Wii U side, and even some duplicate frames on the Switch side, throughout the whole video.

whereas MK8 (servers, updates) will need to be checked on for years.

Ha ha, Nintendo doesn't care about Mario Kart 8's online mode. The leaderboards (and to a lesser extent online races) are filled with cheaters since 2016 so it's not like they're actively supporting the game's online service.

60 dollar dlc and now tying the game to a subscription service to play it the main way.

You realize that nothing is free, correct?

Not sure why Nintendo is being singled out, when everyone charges for services. They're providing a service and if you want to use it, pay for it. If not, that's fine too.

We don't even know the pricing of the online service yet, and if rumors are true, it's going to be cheap.

The lack of other games that will use the paid service compared to the rest of the competition. It's less than a 1/10th.

Yeah I only think using the touch screen for 3D World would be disruptive because of the multiplayer aspects, Mario Mario wouldn't be much of an issue. When playing on Wii U your eyes aren't on the TV when creating anyway.

Right, totally forgot about multiplayer...though they do have the tabletop feature... guess it doesn't make a tonne of sense to port it unless they cut/replace or change up those levels. They have mario odyssey coming not too far off anyway so they've got time.

More than a good gesture it might be good business to incentivize upgrades.

Some sort of discount for digital version if you bought dlc and or digital wiiu version would be nice

The paid online service isn't starting up until the fall/winter. By that point, there will be quite a few games that use it, including the heavy hitters, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart and (hopefully) Smash.

If I need to pay $30 a year to use the online for those 3 main games, that's not breaking the bank. If there are other perks along with it, great. I don't see the issue. Nintendo has to start somewhere. Shit isn't going to build itself over night.

I don't see any difference. I think I couldn't even tell which side is which version if it wasn't written (and if no new element was popping in)

This looks great.
Gladly gonna double dip on this - just like i will / would on any single Nintendo first party Wii or Wii U game that they re-release on the Switch.

"same game - but portable" has become a much stronger buying incentive to me than "same game - but prettier"

He's talking about the hardware and he's not wrong. Basically what's happened here is, Nintendo's managed to release their "mid-cycle upgrade" ala PS4 Pro under the guise of an entirely new system. While the visual gap between a PS4 and the Pro is probably bigger than the gap between Wii U & Switch, Switch has detachable controllers and entirely new marketing in everyone's faces, so at a cursory glance is much easier to be seen as a new system.

But PS4 Pro lets you play all your old games, you don't have to buy them again. PS4 Pro was released for enthusiasts while Sony's on top of the market; you don't have to buy one (I haven't). Switch was released by sheer necessity thanks to Wii U's failure; based on videos like these (and games i already own), my now dormant Wii U could respectably run most Switch games if only it had been a success and had devs giving two shits about it.

Sure i'll eventually get swindled into buying a Switch down the track when the actual Switch software comes... But i'll always look back and think the Wii U > Switch transition was just a botched single generation with a total cost of ownership that'll far exceed my PS4 expenditure. It's like the whole thing was just Nintendo's Wii U gamble going sour, and now they're back begging fans for a buy in on another round.

Really? The Switch version was noticeably sharper to me. Not as blurry.
The fact that I'm not seeing it doesn't mean it's not there. I'm better at hearing than seeing things.
So I just don't see the difference here. I probably would need to see both games run side by side, not just on video.
Or I'd need details to see where to look on the screen to see it as clearly as possible.

The pros of this is that I usually enjoy graphics more than the average because I don't see the issues as much as other people.
Music, sound, voices, (and writing) is where I quickly "see" problems.

^ I can't say I agree.

I agree. And the switch isn't even all that different from the WiiU in what it lets you do, except the range on the gamepad, which I only played in handheld mode in bed. It's a repackaged and slightly improved wiiu in my eyes. Play on the TV, play it handheld. Tabletop mode with wiimotes.

Really disappointed they didn't offer battlemode dlc to the wiiu version.

They even wanted to cancel BotW for wiiu. It feels like they barely have any customer loyalty, yet always expect people to be forgiving.

What business practice? You mean updating a game and selling it for what it's worth? What is the difference between this and a Game of the Year Edition?

I swear, lots of people on Gaf are cheap and thinks shit should cost $20.

What you say is pretty stupid, and more importantly, false.

A gesture to those who owned the game on Wii U would boost the sales and give them positive PR points.

A GOTY edition generally doesn't add any new mode and stays on the same hardware as the original. It also doesn't come THREE years after the original, but 6 months to 1 year.

The advocates of bad economic policies from big companies like you are really the worse.

I laughted at the one that said it's a discount for 50 euros. No. It's the price of their Monopoly and need to give money to shareholders. Nothing mroe. Stop being naive and grow up, Nintendo don't need useful idiots to do damage control.
