New Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gameplay

I don't understand why some are so quick to "lol" at the thought of this being the only Mario Kart for the Switch. Aren't mario kart titles typically evergreen titles for their respective systems? Makes more since that DLC would be an on-going thing that a MK9 sometime later. But I guess we'll see, right? Either way, I'm so pumped. Last Mario Kart game I played was Wii and the last one I loved was DS. So ready for this one.

Definitely shouldn't be laughed off, MK7 still sells so there's no reason MK8 should stop selling any time soon on popular hardware.
In four years time or so there may be an enhanced Switch that needs titles either enhanced or exclusive for the new hardware, so maybe then.

Sending even just 1GB is enough to defeat the purpose of download play. You'd have to set it up, wait for the transfer (could take longer than 10min wirelessly) and then the 2nd player has to install or whatever. And it'd probably be a severely limited course selection to be just 1GB.

It's doable it's just not nearly as fast or simple as people would expect so it's probably not worth it. Especially when you can pick up and play the entire game co-operatively when portable.

1GB taking 10 min? I can download 10 GB via Wi-Fi over the internet in that time and find it unlikely that the Switch would need that much more time. No need to badmouth the Switch for no good reason, it supports fast 5Ghz ac-Wi-Fi.

And if you used the single card multiplayer on GBA, DS, and 3DS, you know that those were limited. But that doesn't mean it's not worth it when not everyone has a copy. It certainly was not a big issue for those titles.

Nah, it's just a downside to having console experiences on the go. Switch is a home console first and foremost. No need for a new topic.

Objectively, it's a portable system which can be connected to your TV.

Keep in mind that the tracks weren't designed with 200cc in mind. Personally I dislike 200cc. It just feels broken IMO

The funny thing is, the one track I really hated on 200CC was Neo Bowser City, a track that came with the 200CC update.

An advanced form of the rumble we've always had in controllers. If you're using a stationary controller as you do in most conventional video games you'll barely feel any difference. The unique aspects can only come into play for motion controlled games.

yeah that's not true at all. the splatoon 2 testfire proved that for me. I mean right off the top of my head there are a handful of uses I can think of for mario kart. one being having a rumble associated with being targeted by a shell that increases in intensity as it gets closer with a variation for blue shells specifically. another is a rumble to indicate what level of boost you have while you're drifting. then there could be different rumbles for the terrain you're on or just a rumble if you go off the track. then there's all the stuff that just enhances the sensory feedback of the game like different sensations when you shoot off items like a bomb, shell, fire flower, etc.

I'm worried that the two items thing will break the game somewhat.

I was worried about this at first too. I have put hundreds of hours into MK7 and 8 and have gotten seriously good at them.

But all this does is rebalance things and change the meta-game a bit. I don't see how this could actually break anything. If anything, it just adds another dimension of strategy.

I'd be much happier if Nintendo made a different game rather than Mario Kart 9. DLC for this one would be fine though.

That would be fantastic. I'd love some more DLC on the game.
The MK8 DLC was one of the best ones ever done and if they had it in them to add Kirby, Fox, Samus and Pikachu to the game, it would be pretty damn awesome.
Add to that some more battle maps, more tracks and A. STOCK. OPTION!

One of the biggest problems with first place in Mario Kart in general is that they don't have to deal with the chaos behind, and have tons of defensive options for anything that comes at them (held item behind kart to block oncoming attacks). Anyone in the middle of the pack, all the way to second place, has to deal with a bunch of shit from everyone else.

In Mario Kart 8, they nerf first-place defensive options by not letting you hold an item in reserve (even when your item is currently held behind you). To balance that out somewhat, they added in a way to block oncoming blue shells.

Going back to two items means first place now is back to having tons of defensive options in addition to the new super horn. And it also means that players behind first will have more items to cause chaos with, which means everyone below second place has more stuff to dodge to catch up to 1st place.

I'm not sure it's going to work out very well.

Are there any new items besides the feather and boo? I could have sworn I read on here that there were weapons we didn't know about yet, and that boo could be used outside of battle

So guys i've never owned mario kart, or a nintendo console.

Is this game worth buying purely for single player? i don't intend on playing online all that often, and i don't imagine much local 2 player etc. will be happening.

Is the game still worth the £40 i've pre-ordered for, purely for the single player experience?

any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Gah Nintendo... if only you'd added one extra cup I would've been in day 1. I played the shit out of MK8 on WiiU, but have never been a fan of battle mode.

I think it's a very solid one-player experience but online is SUPER fun too, I would encourage you to play online.

I play Mario Kart mostly for single player and get a lot out of it, but I'm perfectly content with doing some races against the CPU. Since DX is portable, it'll be great for a commute. MK7 is one of my most played 3DS games for that reason alone.

I've put about 60 hours into MK7 on 3DS, most of them in SP. If you like the kind of game MK is you can easily get your money's worth without ever racing another human. MK8 blows MK7 out of the water with double the amount and quality of tracks and more gameplay modes, so imo it would be worth a try.

I've played every single Mario kart. They all have decent single player, and MK8 is at the very top.

I personally put about 20 - 25 hours into single player Mario Kart and find it to be very fun. However, online is sooooooo great! You should at least give it a try. I am someone that usually doesn't enjoy online gaming that much but Mario Kart is one of the exceptions for me. Don't forget that two people can play online on the same console so it can be a local multiplayer and online game simultaneously which really makes it a lot more fun.

One thing I wonder is if they'll fix the acceleration tier.
ie. 3.5 accel should be 3.5, not 3 etc.

I really hope they fix the Heavy imbalance. Heavies have far higher acceleration than they should and it means Light characters find it way too hard to make us of their nimbleness.

You make a big deal out of it, but it has a 2 player mode out of the box - a first since the super nes ; and the attach rate will most likely be enormous. This game deserves every sales it didn't get on Wii U.

I think we'll see new DLC for MK8 announced at E3 for release exclusively on Switch in Spring 2018.

I don't see a MK9 for Switch. More building on the tracks / characters like they'll do for Smash Bros.

Hey guys,

I'm unsure if this has been shown anywhere but i am wondering if the country flags are still going to be used for multiplayer? Does anyone know?

Thanks

Even more DLC for MK8 is going to make MK9 looks absolutely content starved whenever it comes out. I want it though. MK8 is so good.

Not MK9 but Nintendo Kart. I wonder if they could do more DLC for 8. It already is quite big game in content.

That doesn't change anything about there being no single-card multiplayer though. That was pretty great on previous handhelds with families, which can have multiple handhelds at home but bought the games only once. I guess those will need to play on TV instead now.

Block Fort and veterans aside, I wonder what series crossover would they even go for this time around.

Definitely, they can still play up to 4P on TV, which was not the case with previous handheld Mario Karts.

I don't know what the single-card multiplayer stats were, but knowing previous Mario Kart already had a good attach rate, the percentage of GBA, DS or 3DS owners who used this feature (for more than 2 players) was certainly way lower than the percentage of families now being able to get 2 kids playing together, with a single console and its 2 joy-cons.

Technically Nintendo could have added the feature for a small selection of tracks, but probably concluded Deluxe multiplayer options were already good enough, and on the full track selection.

I saw this question before, but I haven't seen a definitive answer. Does MK8D have HD rumble and if so, does anyone have details on how it works? I haven't played 1 2 Switch, but I found it really neat in Blaster Master Zero.

I don't know if download play for HD games will be a thing, atleast for awhile.

It was easy on the DS or 3DS sending a handful of megabytes, but a download play option for MK8 would require GBs.

Not sure why anyone ever expected this.

It's also worth noting that Switch allows multiple people to play on the same system. Download play was a solution to handhelds being a single-player device.

Is there any sort of stat tracking component for online play? I would love to have a running tally of all sorts of stuff over the course of what will surely be years I spend playing this game.

Stupid question that probably know the answer to, but is Mario Kart TV in this version at all?

Nope, it has been removed. All that's left are time trial ghosts (if I'm not mistaken).

EDIT: Wait, I saw MKTV on the menu? Need to investigate further.

Does MK8 multiplayer have any sort of ranking system or league for online?

Yes, so long as it isn't a custom lobby. Players start with a score of 1000, and their wins and losses affect the total. I got up to 10,000 points on the Wii-U, but I played online non-stop. Points for races and battles are seperate.

are the coins still in it? I wasn't a huge fan of the coin system

Still here unchanged, but now that players can pick up two items, being stuck with a coin item will hopefully not be as much of a problem.

I just realised I was never prompted to make a Mii on the Switch. Does it still use them for the lobbies?

That...... Is a good question. Maybe it just uses one of the default Miis? I'm sure there's footage out there confirming how online lobbies are handled.

thanks for the footy... game looks so much smoother without that stupid 59fps hiccup

It's funny I really never noticed this until the comparison videos. The Switch version really does look much smoother. Can't believe a 1 fps "stutter" could cause such a difference!
