Surface Pro Gaming.

Well if price is no option the Book with the DGPU is the best hardware wise. If you're price constrained probably the pro 4 i5 as it is basically a souped up pro 3 without the overheating issues.

I'm looking for the SKU that has the DGPU, can't find it, is it in the OP?

Edit: found it in the OP, thanks <3

How would a SP4 handle strategy/4X games like Civ V, Age of Wonders 3, Endless Legend, various Paradox titles? Considering getting the i5, 8GB version. Would those be playable at all?

Yes to all of those, even the M3 plays Civ V well. The i5 can run pretty recent titles at all low settings.

Hello all,

I have a question. I have a 4GB/i5 SP3 and I want to play some games on it. I installed Parkan: Iron Strategy. The GoG system requirements state:

Processor: 1.8 GHz Processor
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 9
Mouse, Keyboard

This game should be a breeze for the SP3. However, my SP3 struggles heavily with this game. Any idea why? Drivers?

My wife has an i5/4GB/128GB Surface Pro 4 and she plays The Sims 4 on it. I think it's on the lowest settings and running in a special "laptop mode", but it runs very smoothly most of the time and is very playable.

So ended up not getting the SBi7 last year, but have renewed focus on it recently.

Microsoft as said there is no "Surface Pro 5" but did not rule out updates to hardware of the Surface Pro 4 to update internal hardware to keep up with the times.

There have been some deep discounts on the Surface Book i7s as of late, I'm wondering what everyone thinks on the likelyhood of an updated Surface Book being announced at the end of he month? Maybe with just updated internals like the new Intel chip set and possibly a 1060 in the base?

They have an event at the end of the month, which also happens to coincide with the deep sales on the SBi7s ending.

Thoughts?

I'm glad this thread got bumped, been wanting to replay Metal Gear Solid Revengeance, but figured I shouldn't even both on my Surface Pro 3. Apparently its runs 60fps on low 720p on a Surface Pro 2. Got my Steam install going woo!

Keep in mind the SP3 will run some games worse than the SP2 due to the heat throttling on the 3. I have a 3 and only have ever played a handful of games on it, the most demanding being Besiege. I often hook it up and use Steam in-home streaming to it though.

Wow, I didn't expect that. Let us know how it goes.

Ah damn, I have a feeling you are right considering my past experiences with trying out a bunch of games on my SP3. I'm assuming throttling is necessary and not something I'd be able to somehow bypass.

Edit: After doing some quick research it seems there is a program to stop the throttling but I'm going to have to do some more investigating into how safe it is. My SP3 is my quick internet machine, I don't like to tinker with it really.

I've seen people buy little fans that they attach or use with their sp3 to help keep the temperature down so it doesn't throttle. I would be very wary about disabling the heat throttling personally.

Yea it didn't take much reading till I realized It's not a good idea. Looks like I could possibly squeeze around 20-30% more from it if I disable the throttling, but it looks like slimming down the SP3 to the size it is now from the SP2 is what caused the need for this. Not worth the risk for me personally. Still gonna try MGS:R as is, will post results.

Metal Gear Solid Revengeance is playable, nowhere near 60fps. 30fps with dips at 720p on low. The game actually still looks decent.

Well there is a new Surface Laptop announced

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3194...features-of-two-premium-laptops-compared.html

But even with all option, im not reading it have a dGpu. For gaming a bit, i still think the SB is better since it come with a dPU. They release a revision which got a better dGPU with the GTX 965M,( dont know if you have this one ) and its the best version out there. I have the one with the 940m, its great, but cant play Doom and other similar demanding games on it.

Panay actually just said that something doesn't currently exist called the "Pro 5".

There's basically a new model confirmed for this year already, it just might be a spec bump stopgap (and therefore not called the 5), or they might be reworking the whole branding now "Pro" doesn't make much sense given the rest of the family.

I would be elated if they released a Surface (non pro) 4 or a Surface Mini that would be exactly what I've been looking for.

Panos did say there would be no SP5 this year, but another Ms person did say SP4 was getting a refresh on the 23rd event.

Yeah, not too interested in the laptop. Definitely going with the Book. Just was curious if they would refresh it, since it just got refreshed last year.

Indeed. Too soon for an internals refresh on the Surface Book do you think? It seems a sure thing the Surface Pro 4 is getting an internals boost. But I would love to see a Surface Book with a new Intel Chipset and a 1060 base...

I really hope not. The book deserves a kaby lake and a gpu in the 10x0 family. It would be glorious.

Just picked up a Surface Pro 4 M3. A great bit of kit for the price and much better than my Linx Vision 8 as a computer/laptop.

I can run some older PS360 gen games pretty well at lower settings which is pretty cool.

Is there a blog/list/post/forum anywhere with a list of quality playable games?

Edit: Got some from the OP as a starting point.

The op is the closest you'll find. If it runs on the i3 variant or the pre surface 3 models it will probably work.

With the push of Play Anywhere on Windows by Microsoft you'd think their flagship PC's would be able to run any of the new games at all. I thought integrated graphics had gotten a lot better but turns out you can't even boot games like Gears 4 or Horizon 3? Are dGPU's like the 1050 or 1040 (Does this exist yet?) really use that much energy they can't use them in their Surface devices even on more expensive ones? Even if they switch between integrated and dedicated depending on load. Or are the silicon board sizes just too big for a surface device? (Excluding the performance base)

Would really like some clarification on this as I just want a sleek laptop with all the current features of the Pro and Laptop but with the ability to play games when I want, even if at lower settings than an Xbox.

Is price a factor?

Because this sounds like exactly what you are looking for the Razer Blade https://www.razerzone.com/store/blade-selector
razer-blade-hero-laptop-v2.png
It's thin and compact while packing a GTX1060 and in i7-7700HQ problem is it starts at $1900

Well, with my surface book first gen with 940m nvidia gpu, Forza Apex run like crap but i have to point out that with a Gtx 1060 on the alienware i had before, it was not running at max, same for the Horizon 3 demo. I think its bad programming honestly.

Dont expect to have amazing performance with their top surface book with the gtx 965m, and for now its their latest model. Maybe later a 10 gen model will come out, but when, we dont know.

Killer is Dead plays great on Surface Pro 3 i5 8gb. First couple levels played great, got some unusual slowdown during the start of "Area51" I think its called but it seems to be isolated. More intensive battles all run smooth. 720p on low settings. (Ran it at 1080p for a bit, but I wanted to get a better framerate)

Surface Pro 4 M3 - Phantom Dust on Windows 10 very playable with all(!) the settings dialled down.

There is only 3 - Resolution, Shadows, and Glow.

I am only in the opening area, so will see how things pan out as I play.

Video here:
Here you go - I compare the highest settings (only 3 options) with the lowest settings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyWCJqiTvZY&feature=youtu.be

Highest - very low FPS, feels like 15-20 and an N64 game.
Lowest - very stable, feels like 30+ easy

If anyone has a good/free easy way to check FPS in Windows Games, let me know.

rocking that surface pro 1

overwatch runs perfect
diablo 3 runs perfect
starcraft 2 runs perfect
unreal tournament 3 runs perfect
world of warcraft runs perfect.
Slime rancher runs perfect.

Using a program called throttlestop.

For those Surface users who are curious:

Phantom Dust is free, and it runs amazingly on my i5.

Just change the resolution settings to it's original and its butter smooth, to the point I'm pretty sure you could get it running a base model.

30 FPS with rare dips into the mid 20's.

Will be curious to see some gaming benchmarks on these new Surface Pros. I've been wanting to get one, and want to know what they can handle.

So yea looks like the Surface Pro is just a hardware refresh and the removal of the numbered branding.

I was really hoping to hear about a new Surface (non pro) I've been looking all over for a decently specced 10" tablet.

Don't think it's going to happen. The currentbSurface Book is using a graphics chip with way lower TDP than even the Max Q chips can attain. So they'd have to significantly change the design to allow for more heat and power in the base.

Perhaps a custom Max Q-version of the 1050/Ti? It wouldn't make sense for them to downgrade from the 965M, but I agree with a potential Book 2 getting a 1060.

EDIT: I'm guessing a Book refresh will probably include Kaby Lake (like the new Pro), a redesigned cooling solution (like the new Pro), an improved screen (like the new Pro) and support for the new pen. I also hope it will include TB3, and I'd recon it's possible to include the controller in the base.
