Netflix working on "The Witcher" TV show

I hope the author gets a good royalties deal on this one and that it does at least as well as the games.

He deserves that money.

I don't read Polish but is there anything there that actually states this is a live action series? Because I am still under the impression that this is a cg animation series that Platige will make. Because that's their primary business and Baginsky is an animation director.

I'd be down if if lived up to the quality of the promotional trailers. Hope they get good voice talent, the Polish version spoiled me.

Granted, but there's no indication of timeline. Also, yeah, Saoirse wouldn't agree to nudity for the sake of nudity (in point of fact, she's done a couple of simulated sex scenes but no nudity), however I'd imagine the matter of Ciri getting her kit off is flexible rather than a requirement, to say nothing of the likely fact that some creative liberties are going to be taken, including with regard to adult content.

Characterisation is also important. Ciri was handled well in The Witcher 3, however Saoirse has spoken at length since doing Brooklyn about how important it is for women to portray strong characters rather than kowtowing or otherwise gravitating towards stereotypes and caricatures, so if Ciri were written as Geralt's damsel in distress, then, yeah, I couldn't imagine her being interested.

I should also note that my broaching of the idea wasn't some immature fanboy dream: in addition to what I've already said, Saoirse has mentioned that she's open to the idea of doing what people now tend to refer to as "prestige TV" (i.e. a limited-run series backed by strong creative talent).
It's not so much that Ciri's actress needs to get naked (I can remember maybe one scene in the books where Ciri is naked and they could easily write around that part). However, Ciri does get into some pretty serious situations that are pretty important for her characterization that I doubt an actress like Saorsie would agree to, mainly
her being part of a thieving and murdering gang of marauders and being brutally tortured.
.

If they make Ciri in any way Geralt (and Yen's) damsel in distress though, they fucked up. Ciri is pretty much the anti-damsel in distress.
She's way more bloodthirsty and deadly than Geralt in the books.

Stormlight Archives is better fantasy. Sad nobody picked that up yet.
Way too early for that to happen yet, though I've no doubt it will at some point. They'd overtake Sanderson before he's even a third done with the series.

I really, really hope this will follow the saga and not just be Random Contracts: The Series.

But that short story format is exactly why The Witcher 3 worked so well (with the side quests frequently being the best parts of the game), and why it's so well suited for TV rather than film. Sapkowski built this world and its characters specifically to work well within this format of mini self-contained adventures being front and centre. It's a big reason why the full length novels aren't as popular.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.

I disagree. If they want to make this a high-profile fantasy series that rivals Game of Thrones they have to do the saga instead of the short stories. People want to follow specific characters and except for Geralt, you wouldn't have that if you made the short stories into a show. Yeah, Dandelion and Yennefer would occasionally show up, but that's about it. 'Monster of the Week' shows simply do not work anymore if you want longevity. Meanwhile if you film the saga, you have Geralt, Yennefer, the other sorceresses, Ciri, Dandelion, Milva, Cahir, Regis, etc. All characters with great potential. Plus if they do it correctly, Vilgefortz could easily become one of the most terrifying villains on tv.

Also, where are you getting that that's the reason the full length novels aren't as popular as the games? I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that they were released in English only in the last five years and got little to no promotion. Let's not forget that these books were insanely popular in the 90's in Eastern Europe, spawning a comic book series, a television series, a film and multiple (failed) game concepts before being turned into a succesful game by CD Projekt Red in 2007.

Just thinking Mads doing the Geralt lines.
Mmmm
I don't see it

McGowan raspy delivery from Black Sails or Agent of Shields. Is more likely

I'm definitely not saying "no over-arching story at all", I just mean that TV lends itself beautifully to self-contained stories per episode on top of that, which is where The Witcher excels. A lot of popularity for the Witcher came about because of Sapkowski's approach to short stories and how they played with common themes and stories but twisted them in unique ways. That's something the full length novels moved away from, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but for many people wasn't as fun to read. I'm very much hoping the TV series features a brand new story that Sapkowski assists with, drawing on that strength of short stories, but still featuring an over-arching plot that develops nicely.

EDIT: Weirdly, Supernatural would be a good model for this. Great self-contained monster hunts per episode, that all contribute to a greater narrative. Preferably the Witcher will have a good narrative ;)

Captain Vane in black sails is basically a Geralt audition. He would be excellent casting.

in many ways i felt like Black Sails as a whole was an audition for those producers to adapt the Witcher books

the tone and pacing they struck with that series would have been a perfect match

Ah, right. Please forgive my ignorance, haha. I don't think those situations would necessarily be a deal-breaker; how they define Ciri as a character would be of utmost importance.

Oh man I'm incredibly excited for this. I don't know what to expect though, I just hope it lives up to the spirit and excitement I drew from the games.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

I'm so damn conflicted over if I want it to be CG or live-action.
CG can lead to way better fighting scenes and action. On the other hand, doing a 3min short that was probably done in 6 months or more is way different than doing 10 20-minute episodes in a year, so the quality of everything may suffer.

Live-action can lead to some great performances and probably get more attention. Buuuuuuut it can also lead to jarring as fuck scenes especially when monsters are involved.

got some friends @ Platige and they didn't spill the beans at all, I thought we were friends and all ;) super tight lipped about it, but if they're doin it it's animated, Witcher 1 & 2 intro is their work

Josh Holloway (Sawyer from Lost) as Geralt

This is easy to scoff at but actually a solid suggestion. He'd certainly nail Geralt's characteristic gruff indifference that is very occasionally punctuated by deeper feelings for people he truly cares for.

There's more than one. The author seems a bit too comfortable with writing sexual situations involving a teenage girl.

Really? I can honestly remember one, maybe two.

Anyway, I have a pretty high tolerance for sexual situations involving teenage girls in fantasy fiction. You kinda have to if you've read A Song of Ice and Fire :lol

Some parts are fine. I think she thinks about Jarre at some point, or some other teenage boy in a town, I forget.

Her relationship with Mistle.

There was that one guy (friend to the Rats) at the beginning of book ?4 who she was considering bedding but he died so anyway.

This is the part where it got creepy and kind of soured me. Being blackmailed into sleeping with the elven king or be a prisoner at the tower forever.

The whole Vilgefortz laboratory impregnation thing. I'm still at this point in the last book, so please don't spoil beyond that.

I mean
she was raped by Mistle, no questions asked. The dude that she almost had sex with also had a weird, creepy situation around it(pestering her about sex constantly over days, only to die in the middle of foreplay). There's not much,
but some of Sapkowsky's stuff is... weird to say the least.
