Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

I still can't understand the wizardry that allows this game to run at 60fps with 8xMSAA @4K on my system.

I still have serious doubts if the MSAA setting actually works properly in this game. The performance hit is minimal and even with it at 8x and 4K downsampling the game still has quite visible aliasing.

Yup I've seen this being discussed before and it does seem 8x MSAA leaves quite a lot of aliasing behind, more than most games anyway.

On a whim, I decided to switch vsync to off in-game, and force it through the Nvidia control panel (970). I can honestly say this has solved the niggling 1-3fps dips I kept getting at a 'locked' 30fps, and now the game runs 99.9% smooth, even at 1440! Very pleased with the outcome.

Really good patch, now I can get 60 plus fps with no stutters all the time with a 1070 @ 1440p ultra settings maxed.

Sweet. I have a 1070 as well but a 1920x1200 monitor meaning I should have no problem running this maxed. If I buy a digital copy on XB1 do I get a PC copy free?

That's reassuring, it's my first pc so I'm not too sure how capable it is really. A friend gave me their old card so I had no complaints lol.

Now to wait for Forza to go on sale again...

You should be fine for a good while, the 980 is a amazing card! :)

Whoo damn nevermind this extra RAM and the new patch did wonders.

My specs(before the RAM):
Intel i5 4690K @ 4.00GHZ
8GB DDR3 at 1600MHz
MSI Armor 8GB GTX 1070(OC'd to +80MZ Core/+395 Memory clock stable as per Uniengine stress test)
Installed on a SSD

Before adding another 4GB, my RAM usage was really high according to RivaTuner in game. It was hitting like 7600MB usage. GPU and CPU usage were normal as per the settings as well as the temps.

In game the fps would often drop below 60fps to like 45~fps occasionally. This is at 4K on High settings, MSAA turned off and static and dynamic geometry on Medium. FPS smoothing on etc.

Lowering settings didn't make a difference nor did the resolution. The race I'd test it out on is the 3 circuit bridge in Surfer's Paradise. It always dropped there. After the RAM install I only tested for a few minutes but the drops immediately at the start of the race were gone. It was smooth as hell. This GTX 1070 is a monster. Running FH3 at 4k/60fps is just surreal. I'm sure I can probably bump up a couple settings to high along with MSAA 2X(seems to not work in the game..) since my GPU memory usage still had quite a lot to spare.

I noticed the RAM usage was already at like 8300MB. Is the game THAT hungry from RAM? Seems to be the only game that needed 12GB ram.

Alright I finally reinstalled this last night along with the Hot Wheels expansion (had been playing on my S). My setup is a 3570K@4.4, 8GB RAM and a Gigabyte 970 playing on a 1440p 144hz G-Sync display; latest Nvidia drivers. Except for reflections and world car models, every other setting is on medium with v-sync off and unlocked frame rate. How come I can't select 72 fps? It's either 30, 60 or unlocked. Unlocked isn't that bad with G-Sync but I'm just curious as I could select that before this patch and before I went with this monitor.

Definitely seems to better performance than before the patch but I need to upgrade my rig. I'd love to see this game maxed out, though I do miss the look of HDR on the S with my LG OLED. The higher framerate and IQ are much better on PC though.

I never had an issue with the stuttering even when the game launched but yesterday on the hot wheels expansion I was getting pretty bad stutter. Just a stutter every 2-3 seconds for a frame or two. I'm guessing it was similar to what people had encountered for a while. I rebooted my PC and all was good, I hope it doesn't return.

Damn shame that I can't have both expansions installed at the same time and play either one when I want. I have to uninstall the Hot Wheels expansion if I want to play Blizzard Mountain. Really annoying. I was pissed when I spent $35 on that shit on saturday but atleast it's not too much of a hassle to uninstall and reinstall it.

Am I correct in that the microstuttering is/was predomentently caused by poorly optimized code relating to CPU threading, cores, etc?

I ask because at the moment I'm getting a ton of microstutter with The Witcher 3 whenever using tweaks to increase the grass distance. It's always been on-and-off, where sometimes I get microstutter and other times I don't, but now it's consistent. It's a shame as it basically makes the game unplayable when using grass settings beyond ultra, the game incrementally hitching the same way FH3 did whenever moving through the world, particularly in dense grassy areas.

I assume, like FH3, this is the CPU hitching with the load of having to stream all the foliage in.

No idea.

I have PM'd Helios and he says he will notify the guys at PG about this problem. It really annoys me that DF didn't spot it in their initial video, maybe then PG would have seen it earlier.

After force closing the game due to being stuck at a blizzard mountain loading screen, I now can't even load the game at all. Just says 'loading..please wait'.

This might be a situation worth cleaning the app data from the Win 10 Settings panel (which will mean re-installing the expansions). If I'm any indication, it won't solve the problem of accessing Blizzard Mountain w/ Hot Wheels installed, but everything but Blizzard Mountain should work fine.

Somethin to do with servers I guess. Was a post on reddit about it. It's cool now, just played pretty much after I posted that.

Very disappointed in the update.

I purchased the game (Ultimate edition) on release and managed to lock the frames to 30fps with about medium settings. The only issues I had was a little bit of input lag and some stuttering in Surfers Paradise (I ended up avoiding the area for the most part). I persevered and enjoyed the game enough to get to level 291.

I eventually moved on to other things and uninstalled it.

Now with the patch and the Hot Wheels DLC I was interested in checking it out again. I spend two days downloading it to find I can only maintain 30fps with very low to low settings, and even using this preset, I'm now getting stuttering/slowdown every 5 seconds or so.

Am I asking too much of my i5 2500/970? It run pretty well three months ago before I uninstalled it. Am I missing something here?

you could try turning off "threaded optimization" under video options. It is supposed to boost performance for folks, but if you're having trouble with it on, doesn't hurt to cut it off and see if things improve.

- Try switching vsync off and using it through Nvidia control panel instead
- disable all the UI popups

These things helped me achieve a near-perfect lock at 30, and I'm running at 2560x1600 (16:10 monitor) on a pretty similar set up to yours (not sure how much RAM you have, but I have 16GB).

Something is definitely up, you should be able to maintain a 30fps lock at 1080p with maxed settings. Make sure your GPU and CPU are running at max power (monitor it with RTSS OSD).

Thanks guys.

At medium settings (just the preset), vsync off (in game and NVCP) and all UI stuff, it is mostly 30fps however every four to five seconds when driving it will drop 5-10 frames causing massive slow down/stuttering. It's pretty much unplayable like this.

I can't remember ever having this issue before.

I don't think it's my card/CPU having issues as I haven't changed anything there. CPU seems to run at about 65% in game. I haven't got around to installing RTSS or Afterburner to monitor my GPU lately though.

Upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday. Oh wow the performance in FH3 is just nuts even on my "old" 980ti. Single screen gave me 60fps deadlocked with everything on ultra. But even triple screens performance is great.

50-60 fps with video settings mostly on ultra but some settings between high and ultra.
I should've jumped in on Windows 10 sooner. This is sooo awesome! :)

It's an old Amiga 1200 ;) The PC keyboard (and mouse) is hidden inside the drawer seen behind the steering wheel, not ideal for the ergonomics tbh but the kids would probably mess everything up if I had it out in the open. :p

Thanks :) Yeah I like it too, I'd probably go with 27 inch screens if I would've built it today though, not all games are great in triple screen mode and one 24 inch screen is too small in my opinion. But it cost me half a fortune as it is so it's probably for the best.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

Well, unless your game froze or something... :p
Heh oh didn't realize that, but you know what I mean, it didn't drop down below 60fps.

Btw, is there a way to go up to like 100fps? I set it to variable but it barely changed in any way no matter where I drove. Not sure if my rig can handle higher framerates though but I thought it was weird to never once see it go up to like 70, it's like the the game was capped at 60fps.

I love the random little hands reaching for it lol.

Blizzard mountain is still completely broken for me :( plz fix this T10 I can't get past an infinite loading screen.

You can get around this temporarily by uninstalling Hot Wheels. Not that it's a great fix, but if you really want to play Blizzard Mountain right now, that's the only way to be able to do it.

I tried installing the demo the other day and experienced really bad stuttering. Is it my 780 struggling or is the demo not updated?

The PC demo has not yet been updated.

Hey! Thanks for helping the community and keeping us in the know.

I just wanted to know if there's been any word on why the Groove Music radio station doesn't play through the festival speakers on PC, when I play Horizon 3 on my Xbox One the music of this radio station plays through the festival speakers, but on my PC the music just plays in my car.

As I had previously only played Horzion 3 on PC I thought this was the intended functionality, that the festival speakers don't work with Groove Music, but then when I played it on my Xbox One and found out the music plays through the speakers I figured something must be wrong.

These are my PC's specs:
CPU: i7 4790K 4.7GHz
Ram: Kingston HyperX Savage 2400MHz 16GB
GPU: GTX 970 (Core - 1535MHz Memory - 7560MHz)

I also have the latest version of the game installed on my SSD.

Ugh, after updating to the Creator's Update, the game just crashes a ton. Runs great when it does though! But I'll finish a race and then bam, crash to desktop.

And I can't access Blizzard Mountain with the Hot Wheels DLC installed.

My youngest one, 17 months old, who has apparently already chosen the Amiga over the PC ;)
(10 seconds after that photo was taken he had managed to lift up the top of the Amiga and was messing with the internals (gaaah!!!) :S)

It's all about that Amiga. :)

Has anyone heard about the progress on the bug where you can't access Blizzard Mountain while Hot Wheels is installed (infinite loading screen)? I've done all the troubleshooting possible, and it's consistently blocking me out.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Only that they have prioritized this bug and it's still being worked on. I am also affected.

I've fixed my issues now. I found out that the Windows Creators update featured a Game Mode. It also switched on some kind of Game DVR. I switched off these two features and the game is running better than when I first played it last year.

A steady 30fps on high settings with i5 2500 and a 970. Also get less drops in Surfers now as well.

Phew!
