Hunter gets crushed to death after elephant he shot falls on him

Unless of course the type of person shitty enough to shoot animals like this is also the type of person shitty enough to do illegal hunting because the thrill isn't high enough anymore.

This, they are just total dicks of the highest order who think they are badass killing a defenceless animal with a gun or tranquillisers or run to exhaustion then stabbed, shot or chopped up. Fuck them all and ban it all. Same for you Chinese medicine, antiques etc. They are vile pathetic humans and should be called out as such at every opportunity.

Hypothicals are fun.

Facts are on sanctioned hunting's side tho.

RIP: Shame it happened at all. 5 children without a dad must be harsh.

Yeah, the only sad parts here are the dead elephant and the fatherless kids. Both of which are his fault.

I do not count the widow here since she presumably knew what he was into and made a conscious choice to be with him regardless of the dangers.

Believe it or not legalized trophy hunting can be beneficial not only to the local economy but to the animals.

Poaching is obviously a whole other issue, but trophy hunting isn't necessarily as evil as some would have you think. Still not something I would want to do though.

I guess that makes sense. I still think you have to be a psychopath to want to kill something as amazing as an elephant.

these are farmed elephants, lions, leopards, whatever. its big business in south africa.

This is so disgusting.

When the animals are farmed, there is incentive among the local population to breed the animals and conserve their habitat. It ties local profit directly to the well being of the animal population at large so that the livelihood of the local community is aligned with the well being of the overall animal population. This also works with wild safari tourism as well.

...or they could destroy more native habitats and convert it to farmland, decimating the wild animal population even more. Which would you rather have?

I feel bad for the elephant, but also for this hunter's family. Perhaps even the hunter himself, if this is what he had to do to provide for his children.

I have no idea what other career options he had in life, but at least this signals to his kids not to follow in his footsteps.

Shame this has to be posted every time but LEGAL trophy hunting is extremely important for keeping preservation efforts going.
Culling the old and weak is a small price to pay if it means hundreds of thousands of dollars to expand and protect the reservation.

Mr Botha fired a shot from his rifle but he was caught by surprise by a fourth cow that stormed them from the side,

Humans are animals too. If you're gonna go out into the wilderness for fun you need to remember you're part of the circle of life and shit can happen as a result. I never feel much empathy for stories like this, at least no more than I would any other animal in the same circumstances.

Thank you. Some of the comments here are really gross. This guy doing a totally legal thing got ambushed and crushed to death by a creature he wasn't even hunting. You can disagree with it on a personal level, but what happened to the guy is still tragic.

Some truly awful and ignorant posts in this thread. He paid to shoot this elephant in a game reserve, he wasn't some illegal poacher. He apparentely was a father of five, but sure, jump on the chance to ridicule the deceased man.

Believe it or not, the largest conservationists are hunters. The guy gunning down elephants legally has done more to preserve them than everyone in this thread combined.

Must this "conservation" be done via hunting instead of less brutal methods?

Mr Botha was a highly regarded houndsman and frequently led leopard and lion hunting safaris with his pack of dogs.
I'm generally not one to make comments like this, but good riddance.

In general, this is true in places. But I don't think this is really relevant to this particular situation.

Fuck elephant hunters.

To be fair, the system is ethically fucked up, but it's practically working (from an theoretical stand point, I don't know the numbers on real life) since people just aren't gonna donate the money towards conservation that instead goes towards hunting fees and lotteries. People want shit like animal trophies because we're selfish assholes so you might as well weaponize that selfishness for good somehow.

Fuck elephant hunters.

Given his past of hunting endangered species, doubt conservation is his intention.

Why exactly make this thread? You looking to deduct accountability and sympathy points from people and judge how moral their actions are?

What was your monetary donation to African wildlife conservation this year?

Sanctioned big game hunting is the one time white privilege results in a net positive. Go watch that video I posted on the front page.

What does white privilege have to do with this? They don't let non whites kill elephants?

Pretty gross how many folks are happy that a fellow human being died.

Nobody won in this situation.

Even a mod dropped in to shit on the dead guy, it's sad really.

People sure love to talk and post about how much they love animals and that they should never be killed or hurt but the reality is that these trophy hunters are paying and keeping these reservations running.

I would rather the clients have all been killed. If it wasn't for rich assholes paying to hunt exotic endangered animals, then there wouldn't be hunter guides doing the job to support their family.

It's not that it's discriminatory, it's that it's endemic of a certain culture. Trophy hunting is like white privilege incarnate; it's got shitloads of money, immediate satisfaction, and echos of colonialism all rolled into one big ball of meh. Like, when I imagine a trophy hunter, I imagine a Romney family member.

Without rich game hunters many of these resevations wouldn't be able to be funded and even more animals would be endangered tho.

Maybe, just maybe, people take their ethical standings on what they think is right and wrong, not on the law. It's hard to feel sorry for somebody who died in the process of trying to meaninglessly hunt and kill an animal.

Poetic for the wife too because she made some reprehensible choice to marry a hunter and bare five kids with him? She doesn't deserve sympathy cause she's supposed to know the risks?

Something like that yes, though I wouldn't call it "poetic justice" in her case.

I'd probably feel differently if I knew her personally, but in the abstract I don't feel much sympathy for someone who chose to be with a person who constantly risks their life to engage in (IMO) morally reprehensible behavior.
