So this is how Nintendo expects us to use headsets and voice chat on Switch

I don't think anyone is defending it? I think we all agree it is really clunky . I still don't belive tgey took such an elegant console like the switch and added clutter to it with their implementation of voice chat.

I think some are just taking any positives that could be coming with Frankenchat.

No, no one is defending the design. Other people have just turned this into a "lol Nintendo is shit" thread so people are defending Nintendo in general, especially since the Switch is pretty damn awesome..until this.

That actually makes me feel better. This design is certainly a step backwards.

Amazing.

No, i mean even if the kids have parents who pay for everything and all, they won't have the patience to put up with such a set up.
"They purposely made it stupid so that kids can't be bothered with it, thus protecting them from paedophiles".

We've peaked. We will never hear a better excuse for anything than the one we've just witnessed.

The actual chat is being done and processed on the phone via the app and the wire that plugs into the switch is just for the game audio, right? I doubt that any chat functionality is built into the game/switch system.

Ehh, this is a Hori accessory, so it's not something Nintendo has in mind. I'll wait until Nintendo shows how this app is actually supposed to be used because we still haven't seen what it's supposed to do yet. Remember, this isn't Nintendo's solution to Voice chat, this is Hori's.

It's going to be even worse.

"So Reggie, how the fucking hell are you going to listen to game audio and voice chat at the same time when the Switch is docked nine and a half feet away from you?"

"It's about the experience. Listen, this summer we'll have some great titles ready to be played online. ARMS, Splatoon-- all great, deep multiplayer experiences. And we think it's something you'll really want to try for yourself when the games launch. And I think it'll really blow you away."

"Reggie what the FUCK"

"That's a great question. And I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you of the unique features we're offering with the great online service we're launching later this year. You'll be able to play one of our fantastic NES titles free of charge, for a whole month."

This is amazing all the Nintendo h8ters need to stop dissin omg voice chat on switch while still being family friendly nintendo is genus

It's like Nintendo doesn't want me to buy a Switch. :/

I remember when Nintendo was promising a unified account system and the possible removal of friend codes, and I was stoked because it looked like they were finally learning from their mistakes yet here we are.

Unless MH5 gets announced as a Switch exclusive or something I guess I'm fine with playing my 3DS/Vita/PC and waiting while they work out the kinks and flesh out the library.

aaaannnndddd we have arrived here again

Why the fuck are they not using the system itself

I just plan on using earbuds and my phone, if I use voice chat at all.

I could see how it would be frustrating to people who wanted any easy way to have both chat and game audio but I don't see how anyone honestly expected the phone to have game audio after we learned of Nintendo's solution.

I just hope that the app itself has some good online features to make it worthwhile, but this is hardly a dealbreaker.

Presumably, the cost of online will be much less than the other guys, and if that means no game audio through my earphones, I'll survive. I'd rather pay less for an option I hardly use (even just playing online) than be forced to pay as much as on other console to play against other people every once in awhile.

So it's exactly what we thought it was this whole time. This was photoshopped months ago, lol. I remember the people complaining in that thread that we were all jumping to conclusions and that all the evidence on the website point to voicechat without needing a phone.

Now this haha. Enjoy another Nintendo generation without a proper online ecosystem.

Are people defending this design somehow?
I love how ppl think this is Nintendo fans defending something, when everyone hear is clearly saying that this is stupid shit, but that doesn't mean this has to effect the whole company or the system for its value.

Ppl calling other ppl Nintendo fan defenders is just an easy cop-out to end the argument

Using your phone as a speaker and microphone may actually be convenient if you're playing casually on the couch or whatever (assuming you can do that), but the headphone setup is just absurd. Also makes the bulky gamer headset comments from Reggie look pretty bad.

Nah its fine.

The design is bonkers as is, and I can't quite figure out why this solution is wired. I can think of multiple wireless passthroughs that could do this same thing. The solution itself is weird on top of a weird implementation.

People have speculated that it is due to the joy-cons always using Bluetooth to communicate with the Switch itself. They'd cause interference with wireless headsets or something.

Nintendo really are a horrible company. Can't believe there are poeple that will actually defend them

Imagine if Sony had revealed the PS4, sold the hardware at a profit, friend codes instead of usernames and the need to connect a headset to a phone with a sony app just in order to use voice chat, and let everyone know that they now had to pay for online.

Yeah, playstation wouldn't even be a thing right now had that have happened. I don't get why Nintendo are allowed to get away with it, its 2017, systems had these simple features 10 years ago now.

The way they've been coy about it before and the stuff we had heard I knew it was gonna be terribly awkward, it sounded that way anyway.

I don't even really care about voice chat but whhhy would they do this phone crap? :| Can't see me ever using it.

There has to be more to this news. As it is right now, this set up does look cluttered for portable online use.

Never been massively fussed with using voice chat in the first place ...but not a fan of this.

Nintendo needs to elaborate more on why they feel this is a simple setup.

There are numerous wireless channels that can be used, this is not the reason.

yes cuz who doesnt love game audio back feeding into a voice chat session

Show me the official lan adapter!

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I feel sorry for the poor marketing team who had this dumped on a desk with the instructions "make this look simple and cool".

I feel like they did the best they could.

Not everyone, there are people in this thread who have defended it. Not surprising you've missed t though, I don't expect anyone to read 40+ pages of a thread. But it's happened, people were saying this was a good idea.

My earlier post on this page quotes a guy who thinks it was intentionally made convoluted so that kids couldn't be bothered with it, and would therefore be protected from online predators.

Are you reading the same thread I am?

I've asked at least twice for people to show me posts that are actually defending this dongle or the voice chat app being the only way to have voice chat, and I haven't seen a single example.

People trying to come up with explanations or reasons why Nintendo did this are NOT defending the decision.

Can anyone link to someone actually defending it? Over the past 20 pages I've seen dozens of "I can't believe people are defending this" but not actual posts defending it.

EDIT: Okay I found one on the first page which seems to defend this.

You say the glass is half empty, I say it's half full. Nintendo still hasn't given us any details on what this app allows for feature wise. And even if it does end up lacking features wise, well we can at least push Nintendo to continuously update it with new features. Using a phone to voice chat doesn't have to be a bad thing if done right.

I think this design looks stupid, but this may just be only one of the ways to voice chat.

We've peaked. We will never hear a better excuse for anything than the one we've just witnessed.

It makes more sense than them being smart enough to do everything they do and yet utterly failing to understand how voice chat works on a technical level.

Yeah it's absolutely ridiculous... Even more annoying if playing in portable mode.

Right now my voice solution for Switch is using a capture card and streaming the audio through my laptop so I can chat via Discord, but that only works in docked mode, and isn't exactly elegant to begin .

It wouldn't be Nintendo without at least one absolutely ridiculous design decision.

With that said, I was actually looking for a device like this headset for work so I could plug it into both my gaming laptop and my work machine, to listen to both and take work calls.
