i'm older than you think. high school for me was a long time ago. i dunno what they teach kids in school nowadays.

why not just make taxes the same for everyone? why did it have to depend on your faith?

I don't think it was any better decades ago tbf. I'm just saying that it's a tricky thing, because it's not like what you were told was a flat lie against common knowledge, it was only part of the truth about something you(I assume) didn't know much about. Even what I said should come with the understanding that it's not the full truth, but simply a part of what I know on the subject. There were plenty of Muslim rulers that never followed those tax rules and even would put the Jews and Christians in a place where it was convert or die/leave.

Everyone doesn't want the same tax as that would mean the Jew and Christians paying more yet weren't in control. They could continue to practice their faith, but were taxed less than the Muslims. Unless you are arguing from a Muslim's perspective of it being unfair to Muslims it's pretty fair(as long as the ruler followed it).

I guess if you look at the history places like Spain were controlled by Christians and they didn't suddenly leave the place once Muslims took over so laws were there to deal with that. Beyond that they do carry a special place with Muslims since they have books and the Quran mentions the original ones.

YOO attention brothers, night knight and I are thinkin of coming out tonight or tomorrow for Iftar, somewhere in NYC or one of the boroughs, does anyone else want in?

IIRC jizya was done because the army was formed of muslims only so they wanted some form of contributions from the non muslims as help to the army. Of course this is an old system and shouldn't be applied today since it marginalises people according to faith.
it's an old system yeah and for any other reason I wouldn't care because of how different things may have been back then, but it was a system established when the prophet was in power, I would have expected more equality.

I see. It does sound more reasonable given the context you explained, so thank you. And I should also do my part and start reading more of the Qur'an as well. While I was in high school I also learned that during Muslim rule, historic Spain was the best it's ever been. There were (allegedly) street lamps, a sewage system, basically Muslim Spain was ahead of its time, if all of this stuff was true.

I think they were preoccupied with the Persian king ready to strike them down to care about equality back then. Place was a warzone. Even the current time is better than back then tbh.

If you're planning on reading Quran I suggest trying Ayah. Very good app with many options including recitations and tafsir for every ayah.

Jizya was abolished during the time of Umar though, since non muslim were feeling and acting as totally integrated with the Muslims.It was reinstated with the ommeyad dynasty.

Non muslims were still paying a tax if they didn't participate in the military, but didn't payed zakat and received an higher wage (than the amount of the tax, like 100 hundred times higher) from the state yearly. It wasn't called jizya anymore.

I think it was under Umar rule but i have to check my notes.

Her fever's stable. Did a urine test at the hospital to check but hospital didn't give us a call today. I just want it to be something minor, but I feel like it's the new virus everyone's telling me about. At least she can do the stairs now :)

yo, effingvic, are you in this thread yet?

naaaa I'd like to think it's not anything serious like a virus. If she's got a fever though I don't think she should be fasting.

Glad to hear you're hitting the gym, finally!

Yeah, take it easy for now and using a full body workout seems like a good start. You'll want to start slow and then build up your own synthesised routine along the way. I personally do an amalgamation of splits and full body.

A typical "Leg Day" would look like:

Stretching/warm-up
Conditioning (weighted):
  • Squats *10
  • Shoulder Shrugs *10
  • Walking Lunges *10*2
  • Dumbbell dead lifts *10

Basic Training
  • Push-ups -max reps }
  • Sit ups -max reps } *5 rounds
----------------------------

  • Inclined power walk -max setting, medium jogging pace: 3 miles
Threw in some relearning K-1 arts.
  • 500*2 jabs

Abs
  • Bench crunch 15 wgt rep +15 pulsed }
  • Hanging leg raises 10+10(obliques) } Superset (SS) *3
  • Weighted side raises (for obliques and back) }
  • Cable crunch 15-20

Legs

  • Leg press 20 reps }
  • Leg extensions 20 reps } SS *3

  • Barbell squats 12-15 reps }
  • Hamstring curls 12-15 reps} SS *3

  • Walking Lunges 15*2 }
  • Seated weighted calf raises 15 slow +15 pulses } SS *3
  • Then burn it all out with the step machine and climb 300 steps!

Soon you'll look like this, let's go!

Heh... "typical".

BTW I will NEVER look like that with the diet I currently have haha.

Good to hear from you and Ramadan Mubarak. :)

I guess I'll chime in on this one. You can go about this in two ways:
  • Do a light workout before breaking your fast
  • Or work out after taraweeh and after having regained your energy from iftar . Then use the protein intake as a suhoor meal.

Either way, try and fit in a quick power nap before iftar to remove a bit of the weariness of the day. You need to account for resting.

what's everyone doing for iftar/dinner tonight

i got some leftover lamb over rice in the fridge but i kinda wanna leave it for ceri

I.. have just missed sahur.

My alarm wasn't set and my wife's phone ran out of battery. I woke up at 5 so it's still time for Subuh. But man, today is gonna be rough for me (my wife is on her period). Thankfully, today is a national holiday so I'll be staying at home all day playing video games.

goddamn, my cousin is dogmatic.

we can all agree here that the Qur'an is not a book of science,
right? i mean, in the most literal sense. you cannot read this holy book and then take an exam on science the next day, expecting to pass with 100. sure, one can say that there are scientific miracles in the Qur'an, but you have to know science first.
then you can make the connections in the Qur'an.

I dunno if y'all know but I've been fascinated with human evolution lately, so I tried warming up to a discussion about evolution with him.

starting with me telling him during iftar that I wanna do ancestry.com, specifically because I wanna know how much Neanderthal DNA I got. Then I started talking about homo erectus,
homo ergaster, homo heidelbergensis and it sounded to me like he doesn't believe in any of this stuff because evolution is not supported, referenced, hinted or mentioned or implied in the Qur'an.

The Qur'an says mankind begun with Adam & Eve and that's that. I was trying to say that I believe Adam & Eve could've been Homo erectus but I could already see where the discussion was going.

God is the only thing that deservs worshipped, the only thing that should be called God, but at the same time, I think it is important for every devout person not to be consumed by dogmatism.

it's all good, one day without ceri won't hurt ya. take it as a day to compare it with the rest.

what games you gonna play?

Yeah, there are things about this world that aren't explicitly explained in the holy Qur'an. Qur'an is a guidance for us, a guide to live in this world until we're being called by the God. It's certainly not a science book.

Anyway, I'm trying to finish Vanquish, and then play some Guild Wars 2 in the afternoon. It's 10 AM now over here and so far so good, I haven't felt anything bad.

If you're interested in the truth, science matters. Even if the half-life of knowledge is surprising.

Some people are like, 'God already told you what happened', and others are like yeah, we're just curious about the details. The process if you will.

Each to their own.

Couldn't eat anything for some reason.

Had a glass of water, but nothing else; my stomach feels so odd.

I shall attempt to eat something again soon, haha

i can tell by your & ashe's responses that while you're believers, you're not dogmatic. and i think honestly this may be crucial, or vital rather in empathizing with not just other young Muslims but other people in general.

guild wars 2...I think that may be one of the few games that angry joe ever gave a 10/10, so whatever type of game that is it must be really good!

this is a great way of putting it. however i feel like someone like my cousin will stll say something like "it's not in the Qur'an, so idk bout that" - even if there is insurmountable evidence to support it.

There are some recent books about the Islamic perspective on evolution that I'd recommend. The concept of evolution was actually proposed by Muslim scientists back in the 8th century and later. Their writings were known to Europeans and even Darwin prior to his own proposal.

It isn't a book of science. It is pretty explicitly to prove God exists. The main purpose of it was to show the inability of the mose literate to come up with anything similar or fully dissect the meaning behind some verses.

For what it's worth here's my opinion on Adam and Eve: I think they are our evolutionary ancestors, not monkeys but something old and forgotten.

For some reason way too many muslims are against the idea of evolution. I think it's just pure ignorance and that if Biology as a college degree here it would decrease significantly.

Much easier for your sleep.

Night_Knight was being
awesomely
whimsical. You do NOT go in that insane while fasting out of risk of dehydration.

However, that workout can potentially work if you are doing it after iftar where you can replenish yourself with water. About putting something in the OP, everything depends on the fitness level of the persion. Here's a good article you can link in the OP:

So, you only get to eat once in a day?

I'm not sure if I can do that. I mean, the fasting time here (tropical countries) is pretty short compared to other parts of the world. We only get to fast for like 13 hours or so. Maghrib is around 6PM and Subuh is 4.30 AM. If I eat sahur at, let's say, 9 PM, I'll have to wait for 7+ hours before Subuh. And by then my stomach would already be empty.

why can't Ramadan just take place winter every year like Christmas and Hanukkah

Because Islam follows the lunar calendar and because Ramadan is meant to be a test lol. I mean, you can by all means save up and holiday in Australia where it's a pretty short fast haha.

Sprach isn't wrong there. Besides, if you did make it around Christmas, that only benefits those of us living in the northern hemisphere. South America, Australia & Oceania, and the like won't be very happy with that. There's no pleasing anyone with a fixed month for Ramadan.

it was a bit of a rhetorical question. the moon moves an inch away from the earth every year (something like that), what are Muslims going to do when it is completely lost?

What I have done is eaten my dinner right after Maghrib prayer (8:35) and then eat sahur at around 12:30AM, basically 30 minutes before I go to bed. I think something like this is what the guy is talking about.

I don't have that much self control

Edit: also how does one sexualize women just by looking at them??

thanks for reminding us that men can't seem to think with the head between their shoulders instead of the one between their legs even during a holy month

This is the best time of year to learn some. I'm in NYC as well, but you gotta learn not to ogle.
I used to be much better about it, but after years of being me and influence I've just become a degenerate of sorts.
You specifically said it's hard to not look at women during hot weather. What do you think that means? Don't play fucking dumb.
I ain't playing dumb. What's with the hostility?

So tell me what did you mean by your post? I have a right to be hostile when you're shitting up this thread with indecent comments, especially pertaining women who wouldn't want people who doesn't "have self control" to look at them.

whoa, shitting up the thread? I thought I was allowed to express my thoughts freely without getting judged. And you know I didn't mean offense by what I said, and you know exactly what I meant, that it's hard not to look at girls that walk by especially in the summer.

Exactly, I knew what you meant and I'm telling you that you're sexualizing women who are just trying to walk outside. I'm not tolerating that here. It doesn't make women such as myself (who wears shorter outfits during the summer) feel comfortable.

Explain how a woman is sexualized when she's looked at then. I don't cat call, I don't stare, I don't touch, by all means I'm just walking outside and happen to see a lot of attractive women.

Just because it's easier for other men to lower their gaze doesn't mean it's easy for every single man out there. Men think women are pretty, and looks get exchanged. I can't just condition myself so for you to tolerate

If you're not having to avert your gaze from both men and women, then you understand exactly how sexualization works. I don't think anyone is interested in how little self control you have, and you should have some self awareness that talking about how hard it is for you to avert your gaze can make other people, especially women, uncomfortable.

Apparently not. When I think of the word sexualize, I think about how women are often depicted as sex symbols in risqué or slutty outfits on media, which I have a huge distaste for. And I said I meant no offense.

If you don't care about the little self control I have then what? Is it just satisfying to judge someone whose iman is not up to par with everybody else's?

I meant something like eating iftar then before you sleep eat something light on your stomach as a replacement for suhoor, I normally do it that way but I'm done with college this year so my sleep schedule is messed up.
