Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga thread of TOTAL SPOILER PANDEMONIUM

I love that I just chalked up Mikasa's super strength to just anime nonsense and it turns out she and Levi actually are fucking superhumans

I'm starting to wonder if the anime will diverge to get around the slow politics coming up.

I hope so.

The anime thread can be pretty damn funny at times.

Is knowing Levi's last name really all that significant of a spoiler?

It's the implication of having the same name

I think the next arc can be pretty exciting. Probably the sane ratio of action vs. standing around talking as any other arc. There's just significantly less Titan action.

The politics arc sucks for the most part, but significant stuff happens in it. Not sure how you'd skip that.

Well, I'm not saying to skip it completely, but reducing the talking at least 50% would do wonders, I guess.

It also features Jean Yeager and Armin Reiss, and I want to see that animated lol

Were gunpowder weapons showed in the anime before this episode? I don't remember if they are commonplace inside the walls.

They were used in a trap to blind smaller titans in Trost. They showed that scene in the first opening actually.

Honestly they can speed stuff up in the people vs people arc and it can be fine. Less talking, more progression of the mysteries of the Government.

But then when they do that they will probably speed up to where we're at now....all within two cours.

I think the only fucked up part from the last episode was showing a soldier in Marleyan uniform. That detail gives away everything

Doesn't give shit away without context or a manga reader going in an anime thread and stating this.

The flashback is fine....it gave enough hints to show something about titan origins but not enough to piece anything remotely together. In fact, judging from the anime thread and reaction videos online, the flashback did nothing but confuse people more.

They did this to have people speculate during the next 2 year anime hiatus. Can't wait till the season ends with Eren using his coordinate ability. Savage.

I need a reminder: the coordinate and hardening abilities are titan dlc skills that any of the special forms can obtain if they get the shot, right? If a shifter with those powers is eaten, are them passed to the new shifter?

To an extent. Ymir gained sharp teeth but not the full jaw that the next guy has.

Well, she had sharp teeth as a pure titan, but maybe her jaw was strengthened anyway.

And the coordinate seems more a royal blood thing, as Eren only used it when in contact with Dina, and inversely Zeke has a limited form of it via those that got his spinal fluid. Which leads me to think that
Eren will only get the full coordinate after eating Zeke, as a way of linking his bloodline with that of the royal family... and perhaps be skipped on for the Will due to the separate branch.

Ymir's titan form not getting the Jaw's form after eating Reiner's friend was kind of a big mistake, the 9 titans have a very distinctive look and Ymir's titan looked always crap.

Can't wait for Armi's colossal titan form rocking a luscious blond thick helmet-looking hair.

How can it be a mistake when it's a deliberate plot point?

Explain yourself
Ymir doesn't have a special bloodline. If you're not part of the minority group, you can't use the full power of a special titan.

This is why Marley has to keep them oppressed and on their site to use the titans- their own citizens can't use the special powers effectively.

Ymir is Eldian, just like all those other Titan Shifters. Only Eldians can become Titans.

There is also a rigorous process to evaluate the next Titan shifter. I guess in order to unlock the full potential of a Titan form one must be compatible and prepared

When has like 1-2 years left to live right? If that's the case I doubt he will be the one to nom nom zeke.

Da fuck are you talking about? what crap is that? minority group? da heck? An Eldian is an Eldian that's all you need to become a Titan, there is no such a thing a "Minority group"

Speculation, overruled.

Ymir's titan form should have had drastically changed when she became one of the special 9, period.

I couldn't remember their name.

I was under the impression anyone could become a stupid brainless titan.

Nope, only Eldians.

That being said, I think you might not be completely off the mark...
We already know only the royal family can use the full extent of the Progenitor Titan's power, we were told about families that had shared the eight non-Progenitor Titans between themselves, and that vial Eren used to get some Reiner-like abilities didn't just have "Armor" on its label, but also the name "Braun" (although the characters don't seem to notice that, and since that relies on the reader attempting to decipher those characters, arguably, it might just be meant to be some kind of Easter egg and not actually plot-relevant).
It could be that there are some advantages to keeping those eight other Titans "in the family", and that Marley is trying to do that whenever possible. Marcel and his brother Galiard might truly be better fits for the Jaw Titan than Ymir was.

If this is indeed truth and there is a genetically predisposition to max-out the 9 titans then why having all those kids trying to out-loyal each other to be selected the next shifter recipients when all they had to to do is a blood compatibility test and select the correct Eldian?
Let's see how Armin looks like as a colossal, if he just looks exactly like Berthold's titan form then it would extremely convenient that he happened to be one of the genetically compatible ones to max out the titan form of one of the 9

As of right now and based of what we know so far, Ymir's shifter titan form seems a mistake, heck I am going to go out of a limb and say that the creator didn't have jaw's fully created/designed back then thus having Ymir's titan shifter form look like.. Ymir's regular titan.

Well, it might not be as simple as a blood test. Maybe you can only find out by having someone inherit a Titan and then see how well that went. So it would be understandable to try and stick with bloodlines that have given good results.

As for why the candidates for the Beast and Armored Titans don't seem to be related... Well, maybe they don't have much of a choice?
Although it does seem like Marley would have tried to make Zeke, well... breed. They might not have known about his royal blood, but they did know he was a particularly good fit for the Beast Titan. Unless shifters can't have children, I guess...

Well, it doesn't have to be "either you're compatible or you're not"... It could just be that some are better fits than others.

Yeah something is missing, but I don't think is was a mistake or lack of foresight from the author. He could have created a 10th titan in addition to the dancing titan if he really wanted Jaws so much, but instead he made them the same for some reason. Hopefully a good reason that will make sense

If this is true, I wonder if the assault titan's potential is diminished because Eren is not very compatible and it has some latent power we have not seen

He could just skip around it by claiming Ymir Titan was very weak when she turned, or Titan Shifters don't show the powers if they have been a regular Titan too long. Ymir is the only one we have ever seen that was a Titan for a significant time.

Yeah, compared to the other titans (Armor, gignato size + Steam, crystalization, jaw) it seems likely that Eren's likely working with only part of the deck. His titan regenerates really fast... but that doesn't seem like it could be the full story.

Watch Armin be a "short" Colossal Titan.

Considering how Eren got new hardening/crystalizing abilities from that one vial, it also seems possible Marley use those to "buff" / customize their warriors. Maybe Annie didn't have the ability to harden her skin either, at first.

If that were the case then Eren literally could not exist. Unless that's the Attack Titan's secret biggest asset.

But it does make me wonder if maybe Zeke was actually raised TOO well, if he was fully loyal I'd think his royal status would've been known, he'd have left lots of children there and they'd know that's PROBABLY why he has quasi-coordinate abilities, instead of going "well I guess it's a mystery" when asked about his control abilities. I wonder if he intends to acquire the coordinate then carry out the plans his father and mother had, and actually used them as pawns to get that far?

Huhuhu!

It clearly is a big deal that he never told his superiors about his bloodline, yes. And I would think that's because, as you said, he intends to use the Coordinate himself. But then again, he told Eren that Grisha has brainwashed him (and seemed fairly sincere about wanting to "rescue" him... rather than, well, eat him), and in his internal monologue during the fight for Wall Maria, he seemed fairly incensed about King Reiss, and was going on about having fun while murdering the Survey Corps, so... what the hell is he trying to do, exactly?

Oh man (not actually a spoiler but someone posted up the 2-page opening spread of the chapter)
just based on the imagery alone here they're so totally about to get sneak attacked. There's a canal like the ones from Trost and Shinganshina, they're all super relaxed, etc.

And
suspicious dude from last month is back. Totally Eren (who severed his own leg to look like a wounded soldier?).
According to the preview, the flashback goes on next month, and we'll see how the operation went from Reiner / Bertolt / Annie's perspective. I'm kinda hyped. Among (many) other things, I hope there's a good explanation for what happened with Ymir (why they didn't fight back, why they weren't there when she woke up, that kind of stuff).

(Aso, "Galiard" actually is the brothers' family name, it turns out. Marcel Galiard and... Porco? "Pocco" Galiard.)

Huh. Not 100% sure that's meaningful,
When I called it more than a month ago.

That panel really telegraphed everything.

When do you thing a proper translation should hit?
Dunno, don't care, I understand Japanese, mwahahaha~

But the official release isn't all that far away. And considering how crappy that one English fan translation was, last month...

EDIT:
Also, my time to brag: Gabi is actually Reiner's cousin! ZOMG, my theory is confirmed!

... No, it's not, far from it. It might very well be completely off the mark. But hey! She's.... she's his cousin. Still.

Can't believe the chapter still isn't out yet.

Rereading old chapters today, I just realized that the one of the Jaw Titan's special abilities is to be able to talk while still in Titan form.

Doesn't Zeke do that though too?

Re: latest anime episode - I was surprised to see Ymir's flashback there. It worked well although I'd imagine confusing as fuck and or spoilerific for just anime viewers. Caught Ymir saying she was wandering around for 60 years though - a detail I don't remember from the manga. Definitely made her timeline start to make more sense.

I'm in camp 'legless guy is eren.'

I really want to get back to the OG crew, but have loved seeing the other marleyans.

Reiner's mother is on that koolaid.

Nah, she definitely said that in the manga.
