Pokemon Gold/Silver for 3DS VC

I think the most fun I've had with G/S over the years was trying to play through Gold with Blue's team from Gen 1. Generally gave good type coverage but it was actually difficult because two of his Pokemon can only evolve via Bill's grandfather and you can't find one until Victory Road.

Pidgeot: Route 29 (Day)
Gyarados: Route 32 / uuuuggggghhhhhhhhhh
Exeggutor: Ilex Forest / Evolves at Route 25 on random days
Alakazam: Route 34 / Trading required
Arcanine: Route 36 / Evolves at Route 25 on random days
Rhydon: Victory Road

Might run this team again or might even go with Silver's this time.

I think I'll go with my team from the last time I played Heart Gold, where I had Typhlosion, Togekiss (Togetic this time obviously), Ampharos, Quagsire, Victreebel and Golem. Easy enough to put together (like before the second badge) and I lost my cart right as I was about to fight Red, so I have unfinished business.

I don't really understand the need for these games when I can just pop a HGSS cartridge in my 3DS :/. And I say that as someone who has Silver as one of his favorite games of all time.

I honestly cannot stomach the thought of having to raise up a Togepi without Extrasensory.

Bank compatibility is the obvious hook, though I'd much rather play through HGSS again and jump through the hoops to get it onto bank.

Oh it's not that bad, who doesn't love a friendship evolution Pokemon that can't attack until it learns a move that has a 2/251 chance of causing it to faint.

Literally all I wanted from the Direct. Weird it's coming so far from now though... has any word been stated on Mystery Gift compatibility though? I need my Snorlax Doll and Nintendo 64.

The trophies and Pikachu Bed are going to be impossible to get, aren't they. =\

Well, if Crystal was coming out at least one reason would be because Lyra is awful and Kris is great. For hardcore players there's things like pokemon who can only learn certain moves in the old games, allowing them even more things to work with. It also gives another alternative way to get pokemon in apricot balls, decorating your room isn't even a thing in HGSS I think, and of course for GS specifically the HGSS stories were based on Crystal rather than the original GS. Oh, and gambling!

Sometimes it's fun to go back and play the oldies. FRLG didn't stop the RBY re-releases from being fun.

Not really tbh. The handful of good Pokemon in it are *excellent* no doubt, but they're surrounded by stinkers like Ledyba/Ledian and fucking Stantler. And that's not even considering that the standouts are locked until near the end of the game.

It's either Gen 1, 2 or 6 as the weakest IMO

I think they didn't do Crystal because it is clearly the better game and makes Gold/Silver redundant. Yellow wasn't clearly the better game and was more a prefenrece compared to Crystal.

Crystal will come later once they make money off G/S.

First you hate Final Fantasy IV and now you also tarnish my favorite gen? Man you really have it out for me.

Also it's an opinion but I still say you're wrong.

A Pokémon game is more than its Pokemon. What about the amazing world, music, story, level of content that has never been replicated in a Pokémon game since?

They can add whatever Pokémon they'd like, Gold and Silver are forever eating the series' lunch in my eyes.

Nothing will ever beat the time when I was younger and I walked up the slopes of Mount Silver only to find at the end: me! Past me from Pokemon Red! The battle, the music, the excitement. Nothing has topped that for me in the Pokémon world yet.

(SUN/MOON SPOILER!) Although,
finding out that I am the first champion of Alola and that the music playing was actually my own champion theme did put a huge smile on my face.

The best generation finally getting the release they should have been given years ago.
P.S. Crystal doesn't have Mareep. Shame about the extra egg, mind.

Glitches make getting Celebi easy.

Also: A run with all three starters without any trading.

Wait, how do you do these two???

Also, is the Celebi glitch the same as the Mew one in R/B/Y? Cause you couldn't import Mew to Pokémon Bank right?

Long story short for the first one: It involves resetting the game when you change boxes after putting a starter into a box (Save before you choose your starter). I'm not sure if the Celebi glitch will have the same limitations put on it as Mew in R/B/Y i.e. you can't send it to the Bank but I can't recall the exact method off the top of my head. There's plenty of guides that explain how to do it so check one out if you're interested.

Thanks! I definitely want all three starters so I'll research that one as well. When I was a kid I could never figure out the clone Pokémon glitch so I'm gonna need to practice.

As for Celebi, I'll check that video out.

EDIT: Wait so I'm assuming you need to capture at least one Pokémon to make the starter trick work right? Cause you can't deposit a Pokémon if it's your only one.

They'll probably yank the high shiny rate from the game, which was best thing about it. I remember having over 20 shiny Pokémon in Crystal, including my starter; Meganium.

They didn't mess with R/B/Y aside from changing Jynx's sprite so I fail to see why they'd mess with Gold/Silver, let alone a rate that factors into such a prominent addition Gen II made.

Yeah, you need two Pokémon in your party (1 + starter) in order to deposit your starter.

GSC should also have the classic 1/8192 shiny rate as far as I know. Although breeding shinies to get more shinies was a thing.

It took Heart Gold/Soul Silver to make Johto have any sort of excitement. I'm not saying that Gold and Silver are bad; just the roster. The rest of the game has good stuff, as you pointed out, but when the available Pokemon flat-out suck then it kinda drags down the package as a whole since you have to be interacting with them for several hours.

This is a really bad avatar quote seeing as how I never claimed that any of those gens were actually bad, just weak.

Faster battle system. HGSS is better in every way except that for some reason HP lowers at molasses speed. Because of that I still have more fun replaying the originals.

There is barely a story in G/S and it fizzles out halfway through the game. And what content? Kanto is a cool addition but it made the first half of the game have to be squeezed into the first 40 levels. Between that and the absurd Pokemon distribution I could totally see why someone would find it the weakest to play through.

Rejoice! Best Gen is Gen 2!

Altbough, playing this on 3DS VC will probably just make me want to switch over to SoulSilver after a few hours of GBC nostalgia - better version, same system.

I was hyped for this initially but I've played Silver so many times through on my original cart there's really not much reason to get this until they release Crystal.

Wait so if I still have any pokemon that haven't been transferred to Sun off my VC Red version I could transfer them to Gold like the originals? Oh man that would be fun.

In fairness, the secondhand market for HGSS is pretty ridiculous. I've seen them go for 70-120 bucks. If Nintendo had digital backwards compatibility with NDS games this wouldn't be an issue.

My first reaction to the functional Time Capsule was "big deal, I already sent them to my Pokemon Bank", but with Red/Blue's encounter glitch I could send me some rarer and odd monsters for my G/S playthrough, so that might be fun.

Like my main party regular Mew that I couldn't send over to my Bank ;_;

If time capsule is available you can glitch a shiny ditto in VC RBY by sending over the red Gyarados. This ditto can then be used to breed shinies in VC GSC.

ehhh Gen 2 was the worst gen so i'm kinda hesitant to buy them but I probably will anyway.

That would be incorrect even during gen 2 days (because gen 2 is miles better than gen 1)

But i know you don't really mean it and youre just confusing the numbers, its okay, no harm done.

Gen 4 was redeemed by Platinum and HGSS. Platinum worked straight up miracles and turned the worst games into the best
