Honestly, I'd imagine it would lead a lot of people to not even want to the read the manga. I know for sure that if I had no knowledge of Berserk, and I watched this, I'd never even bother thinking about Berserk again.

True, but I'm working under the assumption that if that person visits any threads that are discussing the anime, someone will hopefully set them straight, like I'm trying to do right now lmao

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
That goes without saying, but can start the manga once you're caught up with the anime.

This really doesn't work considering this current anime starts well into the series and if you aren't familiar with what's going on its confusing as fuck. Not too mention that it basically spoils one of the most epic and fucked up moments in the story without actually delving into it and thus making things even more confusing and robs that moment of a lot of what made it great.

Aight I'mma jump on this. Just to make sure, "the manga" means this, right? There's no secret 1997 version I should be starting with or whatever?

There are 37 of these volumes?

Berserk began in the late 80's

Yeah that's it. This current anime series is a direct continuation of the movie trilogy.

Yep, you're on track

Berserk is so old that it has 'Luke, I'm your father'-kind spoilers

If you are mindful of spoilers restrain yourself from threads with manga readers, youtube comments, etc. You know the drill

Welcome!

Just keep in mind volume 1, and maybe 2, aren't really what Berserk is. It's almost like a test version of what Guts could be but then he dropped it.

Eh its got some rough spots but it's still very much Berserk.

Picked up the first three manga volumes. Not really worried about spoilers, I'm already getting novelty out of this thing by reading a manga at all.

The 2016 anime wasn't really hard to follow. Maybe it goes places but so far there's a dude Guts, he's good at fighting. He's kind of a homocidal psycho but he's committed to his cause, which is an important thing with high stakes. He had a past with a big deal mercenary band that got mixed up in some devil shit. I'm pretty sure that handsome longhair knight who was his merc bro betrayed him or got corrupted or some shit. I dunno what's up with Puck, he keeps talking about all kind of fairy rules about who can see him, but he's done so little so far that the details don't really matter.

Best Boy is Old Uncle Knight who beats fools with a stick and legendarily held the line on some Captain Kirrahe Mass Effect shit. Second Best Boy is Green Knight who plays all buffoon-ish but could probably go the distance with Guts.

Anyway I'll stop derailing the thread. Thanks for pointing me on.

This is actually pretty perfect.

Why not both?

What? But a dozen volumes later he's still kind of an asshole. Did I miss any egregious changes concerning his character?

Eh that sounds a bit misleading. Sure the story wasn't planned out at that point and Guts character is quite different if you would read it in the chronological order (since the first three volumes are set between chapter ~ 92-93 of volume 14), but it's not like it was scrapped or has nothing to do with the continuing volumes.

Guts is never that edgelord "I'm gonna fuck a monster and kill it" from the first volume. That guy might as well be a different character during the golden age arc and then post it.

The Berserk story is a mirror

Guts travels as solo merc/ Guts travels as the black swordsmen
Guts joins the the hawks and finds a place/ Guts joins with new allies and finds a purpose
Midland/Chuder war/ Midland/Kushan war

Speculation my part:

Guts breaks into Midland to rescue Griffith/ Guts breaks into Falconia to kill Griffith
Grifith sacrifices the band of the hawk and is reborn/Griffith sacrifices Falconia and is killed

So yeah he's Guts. Just a very broken Guts like after he killed Gambino and fled.

The 1-page sex scene to start the series is very out of character but can be chalked up to a young writer trying to hook an audience.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not sure why people are having an issue with this, Guts is pretty out of character in a lot of spots there since it was new and he was just seeing what worked. Guts post us seeing the eclipse is a broken and tortured soul, but before we actually saw that, he behaved like a psychopath out of Gantz.

Guts in the Black Swordsman arc was basically a generic 1990 comic book anti-hero. He was an extreme edgelord who acts like a complete asshole to everyone he meets. His depiction in the Lost Children chapter is noticeably different from how he acted in the BS arc even though he's still chronologically supposed to be the same character. The Lost Children Guts is much more mellowed out and feels like a more natural evolution of his character post-Eclipse.

Wait, why are you watching this show if you're not a fan of the manga already?
I am actually but I'm waaay behind. What I mean is that I never drop a show and go manga only because i prefer to see the stories play out in animation first. The animation in this show has become so bad that I'm contemplating doing that for literally the first time ever.

Sorry I kind of went on a bit of a rant there. More on the subject, the black swordsmen arc takes shortly after the eclipse - so he was a little upset, and he was already a man with a violent streak. The change from the count to the lost children arc is because Puck reawakened his good side/humanity.

Oh, gotcha.

Yeah, I'd say just do that.

Berserk might be the only series I've ever heard of where every attempt to adapt it to another form fails miserably because of how immensely detailed and high quality the original art is.

Unlike other series that go on forever with long hiatuses, I'd believe it if you told me that Berserk's author never actually takes breaks from working on it. It just takes him ages to finish a chapter because he draws pages like this:

...which contain more detail than entire chapters of other manga.

We'll never see a truly worthy version of this story animated, because it would take way more time and money to do scenes like the above justice with the added burden of moving parts. Hell, Guts' armor alone is too detailed to be redrawn over and over again.

I honestly don't think the art style is that important in the long run. Yes, the manga artwork is incredible, and the new anime looks like absolute garbage, but that's not the only reason why this show fails so miserably. Because when Berserk is at it's best, it's a heck of a lot more than just gorgeous artwork. Berserk is a series that builds itself through strong narrative and characterization. The artwork is a tool to telling a great story, not the other way around (at least most of the time, anyway). While I don't think it was great, the 1997 anime did an admirable job capturing the feel and tone of the manga's characters and narrative despite it's comparatively simple art style and mediocre animation. That's what is most important for an adaptation to succeed at, in my opinion, and it's the primary reason why this show is such a terrible representation of Berserk.

Also, preview of the Berserker Armor fight aaaand it looks like shit.

You basically summed up the Berserk anime for me. I'm not quite finished with Season 1 yet, but boy is the melodrama good.

Oh my god you guys. I read the manga a few months ago and stopped watching Season 1 two or three episodes before the end, because it was really, really bad.

I took a look in here to see if it got any better.

The last few pages make my soul hurt.

I wish people would stop saying that Guts fucking the female apostle at the start of volume 1 is out of character. That is totally in character for Guts in the Black Swordsman arc of his story where he was insanely hell bent and driven to get revenge on anyone and anything relating to Griffith and fucking an apostle to lull her into thinking he's another easy bit of prey was totally in his wheel house as he was so far gone at that point. His old hang ups were nothing compared to those he gained from the Eclipse.

Okay, watched the RAW version of the Grunbeld fight annnd it was terrible.

Some highlights:

Almost every strike between Grunbeld and Guts uses the CLANG.

1:15 Guts' sword CLANGS when he stabs it into the dirt.

Apparently Guts can float in the air when using the Berserker Armor since they removed the tree that he's supposed to leap off of.

What're people's impressions of this Season so far? Is Season 2 any better than the first? I haven't been keeping up but I'm cautiously optimistic that this season will be an improvement over the first.

In a way, it's actually worse, because it lacks the basic structure that the first Season had. Yes, the CG has gotten a little better, and the direction during the action scenes is no longer nauseating to watch. But the script and animation are still god awful, the story pacing is a complete mess which is made worse by how considerably long the Millenium Falcon arc is, and the direction outside of the action scenes has gotten even worse because of the fact that the studio is now trying to do shot-for-shot recreations of every panel from the manga while having no idea how properly show or transition into them. Not to mention that the current and previous episode are arguably much worse than anything that came before them.

Do yourself a favor and don't watch it.
