NieR: Automata |OT| "I wouldn't expect too much from this game if I were you."

Ffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I just lost a load of progress because I didn't realise after a certain point that dying was actually game over. I hadn't saved for ages which is obviously my fault but fuck fuck fuck.

Just finished the game. It was good overall, but story wise it was disappointing after the first Nier, and while the combat feels good it's possibly the most comically broken thing i've ever seen. The machines aren't that strong, fast or smart to begin with, but the ability to regain 3/4 of my health after killing one (after 3-4 blows with my broken build, not to mention ROUTE C SPOILERS
A2's ability that makes the bosses last 5 seconds lmfao
) made everything laughably easy, and the game isn't hard at all to begin with. Level design and quest design were largely atrocious, the latter only (partially) saved by the narrative of some of the subquests, and (Route B onwards spoilers)
the constant, even lenghty hacking sections killed the pacing of the game way too many times after Route A, which i consider to be the best because of this, of some encounters like the giant machine in the sea, the best bosses in the game and the three best villains, although i realize that the tone was a bit too ""happy"" to be... "Niery".
OST was great overall, with possibly one of the best ending themes of all time, but a bit too samey for my taste. The tech side was also a huge mess between constant stuttering, frame drops and even a few crashes that made me play entire sections of the game twice because there is no autosave and it's not always possible to do it manually.

Still a great package all around thanks to some strong boss fights,
especially in the first Route,
large encounters design, excellent artstyle and music and a nice story, despite being nowhere near the quality of the first one's. I'd give it a solid 8, hoping for a new game in the series and a remaster of the original hitting Steam eventually.

It's on sale for 39.99 at best buy this week in the US. I'm wondering if i should pick it up or if they will do a repackage with the DLC later...should I hold out or is that not likely to happen?

Nope, get it now. Don't worry about the DLC (Also I don't see it ever coming w/ the game), see if the game hooks you before considering getting it.

I'm wondering if I should get it this week for $32 (with GCU) or try to wait for a steam sale. I got a 980ti, so I should be okay with getting the game going with okay framerates. I would prefer to get the game done during the summer than waiting for the holiday rush, and I just don't know if it will be dropped enough during the steam summer sale.

Just go for the PS4 version then.

and yeah. the saving system is shit

Is there a compilation or list of all the translated short stories?

Specifically, I'm looking for
the Memory Cage
and... I believe there was another story that went along with it, but now I'm not sure. Any help tracking them down would be appreciated.

That comment about how weak the machines are reminds me of the DLC.
They know how useless it is to go against this YoRHa murder bot and curse it.

On the Route B playthrough and checking out incompleted sidequests. What is this marker? Scaled the building and nothing. Dropped down the building and found a room with a chest not accessible via the stairs where the marker displayed again (it hid itself inside the rest of the building except for this room) but can't tell what it's for.

Im pretty sure thats the sidequest hiding in the building, tho I can't tell you the exact floor right now. It's hidden somewhere in corner in the middle if the building, somewhere to the side you originally landed on with your flIght unit.

Yeah, the quest giver is standing at one of the windows, somewhat hidden.

This is one of the essential quests though. Do not miss it.

I'll try next time. Gave up on that session anyway since the Family Squabble quest seems to be bugged,
the boy robot starts walking back to his starting position mid-journey and gets stuck on objects.
Reloaded a save and the same thing happened at a different point following an enemy encounter. I had a subjugated robot with me each time, maybe its related? Annoying though.

Beat it. Ending E and all that jazz.

Enjoyed it quite a bit, but man there was no reason for route B to exist in the state it did. Also, while I enjoyed the story, the twists were far too obvious.

Finally, Kyle McCarley fucking NAILED it as 9S. I don't think I've ever been more impressed with a game voice actor. His highs, lows, tone, everything. Just incredibly impressive stuff.

What twists?

Starting route C.

So I'm a couple hours into route C.
Started with 9S after the... I mean, Jesus, was that the fucking prologue?
Did the handful of newly available sidequests.

[C]
Midway through B. Stopped by Emil's lunar tear room just to chill for a few minutes. Possibly my favorite song in the game so far.

Fuck. Fuck.

Your quest giver is on
the third floor
. You'll have to do a little traveling after that, but the payoff is decidedly worth it.

Yeah, eventually found it. After all the searching it was simply in view from the stairs but far enough away from the pod light that it was in darkness.

I think route B's run is making me a little nauseous due to all the combat hacking transitions. Hopefully there are enough sidequest rewards remaining in this run to reach an extra 90,000G. I think that quest is still around during the third act?

Update 2 from someone that was early to Nier and thought it was way overrated (by fans) after:

Great pacing
Big fights are top class - like TOP class
Some dumb blocks to sidequests
Movement restrictions in 3D2D needs a tweak
Imagery is TOP class
I actually really like the setup of the sidequests because the world is so damn inviting. I wish there weren't so many artificial walls but it's an interesting one nonetheless. Wish I could play this world with Zelda's engine tbh.
Checkpoint system or lack there of SUCKS (Zelda BOTW should be the standard tbh)
The map kinda works and still sucks. It's not accurate on a consistent basis.
Need more shoot-y options. Ways to attack.1
Masterful pacing. I feel invited back for the design and world. Greatness to this.

WAY better than the first game.

The game really doesn't want me completing the Family Squabbles sidequest, huh. After four attempts on an earlier save (which I later reverted to see if going back earlier would un-bug it) which had the character stopping and walking back either mid-way or at the very last enemy encounter, on this new save it has the character stuck here (no enemies appeared at this point, either):

:S

Update: turns out the enemies were above and hadn't come down, which caused the character to stay in that position. Cleared them from above and the remaining enemies and could finally complete the sidequest.

Heh, I guess so. At this point, you'd obviously heard about how much people like the Route, so it's pointless to hype you further, or try and downplay it. Whatever happens happens lol

Bless the Spear of the Usurper :) Finished Route C.

Had the same type of flyer in the first shot with me almost the entire
elevator boss fight
. Nice to know you've got company. Seems the YoRHa units didn't twig to it in the first fight though (seen on the right).

About Strange Woman.
For buying trophies.
Should I begin another playthrough until I reach that character, or can I see her easier?

Edit: I found it!

done with route A,
that credit song, first ever game credits i didn't skip.

started route B got a route G ending. lol
the constant hacking and
9s only having light attacks
is gonna make this tedious. urgh.. but i really like his character so i'll stick at it.

is the only way to defeat the gold machines by hacking only? really?

No, you can kill them normally, it's just that hacking is obviously the best way to do it.

I'm missing one complex gadget for the weapon shop request at the beginning of the game and I can only find 3 out of the 4, I've searched the red area throughly

I tried to quit and restart the game to let the enemies respawn and I had no luck.

The game is 1.06 on PS4 and I waited for the full install, is it bugged?

play around with your moveset and you will realize that you can do far more than you think. By the midpoint I stopped hacking the vast majority of enemies because it took longer than just killing

If you delay your inputs ever so slightly, you can do heavy attacks. Like Square->wait->Square will do a light attack and then a heavy attack.

Am I correct that equipping the spear for the light attack doesn't allow for the spear throw move for characters other than 9S? Really liked that mapping.
