The U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords is only the third Navy ship named after a living woman:

The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned a warship named for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), making it the third Navy ship ever to be named after a living woman.

Giffords resigned her House seat in 2012 after surviving an assassination attempt at a grocery story in Tucson, Arizona. Then-Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus contacted Giffords that day to tell her that a warship would be named in her honor. The 418-foot littoral combat ship was built in Mobile, Alabama, and christened by Dr. Jill Biden in 2015.

Democratic heavyweights, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi attended the commissioning. Clinton, Pelosi and Biden honored the former representative for her service in the House, her heroism following the assassination attempt and her dedicated activism since then.

“Indeed throughout the world, and throughout America, there isn’t a name more universally loved, more admired, more respected than the name of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords,” Pelosi said.

The top Democrat commended Giffords for her dedication to active service members and veterans through her work on the House Armed Services Committee. Giffords’ husband, Captain Mark Kelly, was on active duty at the time of her service in the House. He retired from the Navy and NASA shortly after the shooting incident.

“The patriotism and the heroism of Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly embody the highest ideals of our nation,” Pelosi said.

Clinton heralded Giffords as “a truly great American,” saying the former representative came out of the assassination attempt “with grace and faith that is almost hard to imagine.”

“Instead of saying what might be expected and asking the question, ‘why me?’ she said, how can she make the most out of the life, the miracle, that she represented,” Clinton said. “And time and time again she has stood up ready to keep moving forward, to persevere with her trademark humor, kindness and relentless optimism.”

“It’s designed to be agile, quick to adapt, able to swiftly maneuver in the roughest of waters,” Clinton said of the ship. “Every moment of every day that the sailors who man this ship are given the great privilege of defending our country, they only have to look toward this ship’s namesake.”

Giffords called the commissioning “an incredible honor,” and thanked members of the military for their service.

“The U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords is strong and tough, just like her crew,” she said. “I thought of you in my darkest days. We ask so much of you. Despite danger, you say yes. You make me proud, you make America proud. I will never forget this day or the crew of the U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords.”

Who made that decision?

I don't know what's up with the phases of ship deployment, but this decision was made a long time ago. This is coming up because the ship is being commissioned now (?).

I see the irony in naming a warship after a shooting victim, but it's probably best not to overthink it. It's just an honorific.

It does reek a little of a PR stunt since naming a ship after a living person is very rare, and while I respect what she has gone through.. there are a ton of more deserving people. However her husband was a Navy Captain and she has spent a lot of time and effort as a veterans advocate and supporter so this isn't completely out of nowhere.

Guys, if Gifford herself is okay with it (she says in the article it's "an incredible honor") then I don't really see what the issue is. I'm sure if she wanted she could have told them "no thanks". Lincoln, JFK, and Reagan were all shot and they all have aircraft carriers named after them. Sure, they're not straight-up battleships, but they're still ultimately weapons of war. I see this as being only marginally different.

I think it's weird but I don't give a crap what they name ships. Well, i do only if they christen some garbage scow the USS Donald Trump.

Let us honor her surviving a shooting with a huge boat that shoots huge bullets.

The victims of violent crimes don't automatically abhor all violence, including that which is enacted in a lawful matter. The woman was a sitting congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt. This is an honor.

It's a vessel whose primary mission is to help protect the interests and freedom of the United States.

It will be the home and operating base of many dedicated men and women of the military.

Yes, it has weaponry - but that has always been a necessary instrument of the military, including peacekeeping deployments.

Pretty high honour, I would say.

p.s. I am not an american, just calling it as I see it.

Yes it seems a bit odd, but it's not like it's a battleship, it's armed yes but its ability to enter shallow waters is it's main selling point since it lets it go places bigger ships won't and deploy troops and vehicles. It can also be outfitted to do a bunch of different things like anti sub warfare and minesweeping.

Even for straw mans that's pretty dumb.

I wasn't being serious with that example, but it is a serious question of who people would rather the ship be named after. Are you only allowed to name a ship after someone if they haven't been a victim of gun violence?

I'm pretty heavily anti-war, but the navy does a lot of humanitarian work around the globe since they have the capability of deploying anywhere in the world in a relatively short amount of time so I'm cool with this. Although I may be biased since my grandfather and father were both in the Navy.
I just realized we may get a USS Donald Trump in the future.

Hopefully impeachment and criminal charges would put a stop to that.

As a navy vet its kinda I don't know. Not sure if she served but I kinda think War ships should be named after Veterans. This should not take away from her own story and she should be praised for her courage.

I'm not sure I can name many ships not named for Vets that are actual names. ( I don't think enterprise is a proper name)

It's not weird. Having a navel vessel named after you is one of highest honors in the US government.

It seems like a nice way to commemorate her service to this country and the fact that she, like the sailors who will man it, put her life on the line for the U.S. (and hopefully all who serve on that ship will survive just like she did).

Moose Biscuits

It would be extreamly painful...
I misread the thread title for a moment, and although I think this is a good gesture now I really want a navy ship called the USS Gun Violence.

It's ironic I guess, but not weird. I'm pretty sure Giffords acknowledges the difference between a political lunatic (just looked up his face, ugh) and US naval craft and their need for names.
