Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Marketing stunt so that people don't end up disappointed, as the real price will likely be $400.

Folks (like me) are convinced it's $399. And for the sake of Xbox and its fans I hope that's true. Geoff is saying with confidence it will be $499. Who's to say we're not both right?

$399 core - no controller or other bells & whistles (maybe a smaller HD too)
$499 standard with controller, better HD
$599 deluxe - some sort of fancy finish, or another controller, games, autographed picture of Phil etc.

Pachter seems to agree with me.

This is a marketing stunt.

I have to say that was my first reaction.

Get Geoff to "leak" it as $499 to put a dampener on things....

..and then its actually announced as $399 and hype gets a massive boost (despite most people initially assuming it would be $399 anyway).

But you created the blow beforehand now. The expectations have never been a cheap console.

Come on now, the expectations as of lately have largely grew to the 399 side of things, as you can see in this very thread, a lot of people will be shocked if that is indeed the price (i won't).

I'm not saying this one would be a dirty deal to do, i think if it's a controlled leak to soften the blow, that's fair, i don't view it as a dirty stunt.

If the thing at the end of the day is indeed 399 then i think this is a bad look, mostly for Geoff.

Only 5 hours to go so won't bother going through the million reasons why this does/doesn't make sense but why has Geoff tweeted this?

I mean he sure knows a good number of unannounced games+other stuff so why not share what they are today?

This was my expectation since the thing was announced, but I'd still like to see a 399.99 tag on it. This also isn't typical of Geoff.

Not sure why Pro is being brought up in regards to the Scorpio pricing. Different components, company, and releases. It having come out a year ago has nothing to do with what this device may have to cost.
It is comparable components a year between launch, remove the extra ram and the uhd and I bet build costs are close to that of pro a year ago, that's why people bring it up.

2013 : Xbox One, the best reason to choose a PS4.
2017 : Xbox Scorpio, the best reason to choose a PS4 Pro.

I hope it is not true. A healthy competitive market is better for the costumers.

His reputation is above leaker status. This doesn't make sense unless it is a stunt. Like the Joachim bullshit.

This why I think it really is $499 Microsoft wants people to focus on everything else and get the sticker shock over now.

If you know it's $499 watching them explain everything it's an easier pill to swallow themn expecting $399 and then having them announce otherwise

Now I'm sure its gonna be 399.

I don't think Geoff is playing part of the stunt, but his sources at MS must be the ones giving him bad info on purpose.

Considering this is Geoff it has to be a 100% controlled leak. He doesn't go out and leak things early it's literally against what he's pretty much built his entire reputation around.

Meaning this comes directly from MS. Question is why?
I remember he leaking stuffs in the past... reliable stuffs.

But now he is untrustable.

Maybe they gave him permission to get the bad news out of the way because they have good content for the conference and don't want it to get ignored/overshadowed. Only thing that makes sense to me. Geoff wouldn't put out false info on something concrete like price but he also wouldn't do it if he thought it would really hurt a major industry relationship of his.

This makes a lot more sense than the conspiracy theories. We stir ourselves into the usual lather and wear ourselves out. Then by the time MS announce the price we just go 'yeah' and while disappointed it doesn't distract as much from the rest of the conference

Were people really expecting 399? Lol

It'll certainly be interesting to see who buys into this early

The PS4 Pro will likely be on sale for 350 with a game on black Friday.

That will probably be 649.00 in Canada. I will buy it, sounds like a massive improvement over xbone but I will say that price is probably gonna scare a lot of people off. But that said this thing sounds pretty amazing if all the rumors come true.

Why would Geoff leak the price on the morning of the announcement? Call me crazy, but I'd say that the price really is $499, Geoff knows that that's a big mistake, and he's leaking it early in an attempt to show MS the public outcry if they do that. He's giving them a chance to change it.

As I noted Geof doesn't leak. Like ever. That's how he gets all his industry work.

This comes directly from MS. Question is, is it some sort of PR stunt or just a move to try to get the bad vibes out there early

Anyone with any sense already knows this. Go look how much Xbone 2tb is selling for on amazon.
Anyone hoping for 399$ is dreaming imo.

never heard about the cat, apparently
i guess you have to think about Microsoft's larger strategy.

$500 is probably the new norm for Xbox Launches.

Bring out a new box every 4 years or so, games continue to work on the lowerend hardware and PC. How long before they get rid of the xbox one sku is the question though.

I'm game for that price honestly. Especially if it comes with an elite controller. Much like my PS4 Pro, this is a straight luxury purchase.

This was the price I expected they'd go with initially. Makes sense. They'll need to put in the work to sell it though

They gotta release with a controller right? Cmon...that would be horrible
