I'm always up for more Metro. Such a good E3 for me so far. :D

I feel like I should be more into these games than I have been. I've sort of grown out of shooters, but the Metro games are not like others, they have a distinct soul to them, the whole Eastern European, harsh post-apocalypse theme and atmosphere. Yet I've barely played them.

I don't know how "Russian" this game will be. 2033 started the series off as a more mainstream focused game than Stalker, but it had these ideas, like ammo as currency.
There will probably always be some remnants of that in the work these people do. But basically I hope that those kinds of ideas will have a place in some interesting manner. I like interesting things. They interest me.

I get what you mean. It's why metro and STALKER are so great. They have a soul and perspective that is distinctly eastern European. It makes them feel like really unique experiences that you just don't really get from other regions of the world. It's kind of like how Japanese games tend to have a "feel" that is distinct from western devs.

To everyone who thinks this is a vertical slice - go and play 2033 and LL. This level of hand crafted immersive animation is very typical for the franchise. If I had to guess I'd say that the scene in the video is from one of the earlier quests, probably just after the prologue, once you get to the 'open world' part.

Other than that, I'm excited. If they can tone down the amount of set pieces and bring the game closer to STALKER and keep the solid mechanics they already have, this could turn out to be an amazing game.

I've posted this in other threads, but if people haven't played Metro and want to get a taste of the series before the new game, Metro 2033 and Last Light are on sale in a bundle on Steam for $7.49 (US price). Sale is over in 7 hours.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
It definitely looks like they're steering more towards the STALKER design, but it sounds more akin to Crysis, where it's still a strictly linear story/level paced shooter and it's the levels themselves that are large playspace perhaps with optional and side objectives. From memory even Last Light breached this a little bit, with smaller tangent areas to explore off the main path.

I wouldn't say it sounds quite like STALKER. Even though that paced itself between linear zone progression, you could transition between zones fairly comfortably and unrestricted beyond story specific bottlenecks, and each zone played with full agency driven exploration and pacing. It was like a series of mini open worlds stitched together and that just seemed like a product of tech limitations. If STALKER was made today I'd fully expect total open world.

Nevertheless, STALKER/Crysis level design infused in Metro is something I'm all over. I preferred Last Light's focus and polish over 2033. And honestly, if we're talking over scripting and linearity, what we see in this vertical slice is actually hugely reminiscent of 2033's liberal use of scripting. Will be interesting to see how the final game looks.

I'm all over this game, needs a lot more hype than it is getting. This is easily one of my favourite games shown.

Does anyone know the release date/window on this?

I'm concerned about the lack of gas mask use on the surface... It won't be the same. If any series was the opposite of "open world" this was it. I don't see how this will feel anything like the previous two. They were dark and claustrophobic. Even once you were out of the tunnels, the poisoned air kept you on a short leash.

It has been awhile.

Also he is wearing it underground.

GameSpot Interview

The devs specifically mention S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has an influence.

Andriy "Prof" Prokhorov, the Creative Director of the game said "The core team has experience with S.T.A.L.K.E.R., we have the same core team. This time it was an ambitious idea, let's try to combine Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R."

Excuse me, I need clean shorts.

according to digital foundry, the devs said this is an in engine production. its their visual target. 4a hasnt been known to downgrade so hopefully at least pc reaches this level of fidelity

I just read that after receiving the Eurogamer daily digest email.
It's actually running on a PC to "x1 spec" with "flourishes". http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...x-one-looks-stunning-but-we-need-to-see-more? Surprised not to see a thread based on some of the comments in there.

digital foundry said:
Deep Silver checked in with us after the event to see if we'd caught the reveal - a good opportunity to ask the golden question: to what extent is this exquisite trailer representative of the actual game? Is it anything like the real thing?

We're told that the sequence is built to target Xbox quality. A couple of 'flourishes' were added, but the player actions, the environments - 'that's all real'. And further: 'that sequence will be in the final game and it will stack up'. Let's bear in mind that 4A has yet to release a title built from the ground up for current generation hardware. In the 'post-downgrade' era, where developers have hopefully learned not to over-promise with pre-rendered video, we're prepared to give a developer with this much talent the benefit of the doubt and hope to report back soon with more on what looks like a simply astonishing game.

Seems it's not the only game running on a PC to "1x spec" in the presser and on the show floor.

I'm wondering, why are there seasons now? I was under the impression that people didn't go outside of the Metro tunnels much because the air was unbreatheable, and it was nuclear winter. The next game having people be outside the tunnels without gasmasks and there no longer being snow on everything goes against that, was i wrong? I even remember someone mentioning in-game how it would be uninhabitable for years.

In Last Light, it was shown that the snow had thawed mostly and that the sun was actually beginning to come out. Actual normal weather was returning in LL, the air was still pretty toxic though.

Also, if it is taking any cues from the last book, Metro 2035.

MAJOR METRO 2035 SPOILERS:

The idea that the entire world ended wasn't really true, it was actually a conspiracy perpetuated by the former leadership of Russia and their agents in the metro to keep citizens from making themselves known to the world for fear of "enemies" bombing them again and actually wiping them out, which actually was most likely a crock of shit because they had no way of knowing if there really were any enemies. While it wan't made entirely clear how bad things were, it seemed like major parts of Europe and the rest of the world were okay and that the mutants were beginning to die off. It was also shown that radio channels were up and people across the world were communicating and that the only reason people in Moscow couldn't contact the outside world was because the agents of the leadership put up jammers on the surface.

Weather was back to normal as well it seemed.

You also could have the case where places outside of major fall out areas (the metropolotian areas) have less airborne radiation.

Me and my brother we finished 2033 on 360 years ago and we bought Redux when it came out. Last weekend I finally started playing 2033 Redux and man this game is still awesome. This game NAILS the atmosphere, it's amazing. And I absolutely love the Last Light engine. Man the lighting is great here.

The game aged well with rather smart enemy AI, meaning the soldiers. It's quite fun fighting against them. It's the small things like how they actually notice your flashlight and stuff. If there is one thing I am not a fan of is the Nausilus encounters where they just keep coming at you and they can take a shit load of bullets. I definitely could do with less of those parts.

I'm in chapter 5 now and after I finish this one it'll be straight onto Last Light Redux. It's gonna suck to have to go back to 30fps when Exodus comes out though. Makes me wish the developers will actually bring a 1080p/60fps option but I'm sure it's gonna look fantastic in 4K as well and I'll probably adjust to 30fps pretty quickly.

I really love the redux versions of the games, even if 2033 redux isn't the most popular. Playing them both back to back is great. Genuinely feels like one long game.

Hopefully Exodus will run alright on my ageing system. I expect it will.

You are in for a ride, Last Light is freaking amazing.
I loved it more than 2033.
It's a better story, a better adventure and a better game.

(By the way, I absolutely hated Chapter 5 in 2033, those library monsters suck, you have to pause and stare into their eyes for 20-30 seconds before you can do anything. Worst part of the game no doubt.)

One of my favourite bits of 2033. The feeling when you get through without killing one is great.

But it's the same animation over and over again for like 10-15 times...well, I am sure they won't be back in Exodus.

(Please do quote me on that If I turn out to be wrong. I'd like to travel back in time and slap myself.)

Was that actually gameplay or in-engine footage? Felt more like an in-engine footage game representation

Yeah, it looks way too good if you ask me.
For me, as long as it looks better than Last Light Redux I'd be perfectly fine with it.
Judging from the video it seems like they are finally using physically based rendering, hope I'm not wrong.

Yeah that's definitely a good way of seeing things. One long game. They really nail that atmosphere and man, that music too. I really dig the things like gasmask in this game, how you need to take care of replacing those things, how the mask can be damaged, how you need to charge your batteries yourself or the way you look at objectives. Lots of things many other games don't even bother with.

Well the thing is, I've actually played a huge part of Last Light already back in the 360 days or maybe it actually was the Xbox One version already. However I took a break from it and never went back. So now after 2033 i will restart it completely.

As for chapter 5 oh great. So I'm in for a very annoying part then. I forgot about that. Was hoping they would ease down with these monster encounters for a minute. I don't mind the monsters but I hate it when it seems like a endless stream of these fuckers is being sent at you. No matter what game.

Definitely looked ingame to me man, it sure didn't look too good to be true to be honest. This is the kind of improvement I would expect for a new Metro game for sure. Maybe some parts will be different in the full game like the big beast chasing the player but that looked like gameplay to me.

This is the same team as the other two games right?

It was in-engine: https://youtu.be/4qqpRlDSDFA?t=7m39s [7:40]

But I'm still hyped as hell, Metro series is probably my second favorite when it comes to FPS games, with only STALKER topping it off.

Guys and gals at 4A are really underappreciated and it breaks my heart.

I'm really looking forward to this game, and one of the main reasons why I want an Xbox One X because I'm mainly a console gamer.

That said, and forgetting consoles for a moment, is there any reason why Metro Exodus could not or would't look that good on a high-end PC in terms of detail and lighting?

Also, the last game (Last Light) was originally released in what, 2013? So it'll have been 5 years by the time Exodus comes out.

looking forward to this one. Great little series. Fun and doesn't try to go too far out there to be so different it loses its core value.

4A Games do all their games real-time. Its all a seamless cut scene to gameplay transition experience without the “in-engine but with higher polycount or better lighting” shenanigans that other devs do. This was all real time footage and 4A Games have taken visual fideltiy to the next level.

Huge fan of Metro series, and a huge fan of Stalker. lets see if they can replicate the amazing level design of the stalker games.

I am excited to see what this brings to the table, I just hope the developers don't forget that part of what made the first two great was the interconnected world of the underground.

I played the other two on a whim, and really enjoyed them. I'm looking forward to this next one for sure.

I really don't know what to make of this so far.

I do sort of like what I'm seeing but I also remember feeling the same about the other games but ended up not thinking much of them when I played them. Maybe I should download them and give them another try?

I think in some ways this may suit me a little more as I just got bored of being in the subways so often, perhaps being a bit more open will help me enjoy them more.

I had the same feeling of the metro games and they don't change much as you progress. The people saying this is a lot like stalker are setting up stalker fans for disappointment, I don't see anything that looks like stalker other than the fucked-up veneer and the mutants etc.

Stalker was defined by many things more than its theme, the main one recognized by people was the discrepancy between its design approach and every other western game with respect to its concessions to the hardcore. Metro is the complete opposite and it rewards mediocre gameplay with spectacular results. The only striking similarity is its Half Life esque missions which, for stalker, only served as down time between the main gunfights and action scenes.

If they play it right 4A Games could have a Witcher 3 caliber hit in their hands. I need to replay the redux games in anticipation!

https://gamerant.com/metro-exodus-sandbox-gameplay-map/

Producer Jon Bloch reveals that it will be much bigger than previous games in the series in several ways. For example, each city in the game will be three or four square kilometers, which will make them the largest maps that 4A Games has ever created.

These cities will also be filled with things to do. Bloch says that “the mix of classic Metro gameplay with these new sandbox environments provide a lot more freedom and options to the player while still maintaining what we think makes our previous games so enjoyable.”

Players will “encounter new societies, religions, ways of life, environments, monsters, and mutants. Some will seem familiar in some ways and some will be completely new.” Fans can get a look at the game’s mutants and the train (called The Aurora) that Artyom will use to travel between each city in the gameplay trailer that debuted at The Game Awards last month.
