Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
It makes me laugh how there are still skeptical people as though you could fake 9 foil pirate cards less than 24 hours after they revealed that Ixalan is a pirate set.

Gavin wrote an entire article about Temur Tower on the main website.

I'd much rather the design space be explored in supplemental sets like Conspiracy or other yet to be produced sets like that.

I mean, they do that too, but there's a big advantage silver-bordered has over even a supplemental black-bordered set on this: the rules don't actually have to work. Most of the more interesting ideas from these sets come from trying stuff a Rules Manager would never let out of the starting gate.

Treasure tokens?

Goddammit. I guess I should feel vindicated that they're running with a mechanic I had at the center of the pirate set I put together, but yeesh.

It's been 15+ years since people had good enough digital cameras to easily leak photos of cards and people still don't get that the only thing relevant in 99% of cases is whether you can quickly find the art or not.

I maintain that the leaks are intentional, because someone at Wizards actually knows how to do their job when it comes to building hype and getting people talking.

Point in case: I am no longer completely and totally disappointed by "Announcement Week".

Are you saying that it can be an opportunity for designers to push past the current boundaries of the rules to new space that could be open in the future? Otherwise I really don't get the point.

That's basically what it is. There's a few un-set cards that were first tries at things that became actual mechanics later on. Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug begetting the Pact cycle is the biggest one probably.

There are multiple examples of Un-cards being used as inspiration for black bordered cards.

It was also used to determine that players wouldn't like using dice rolls in black border, and that cards that care about what happened last game have some design space but wouldn't work in black border, among other things that could have been hard to test in black border.

Wizards really upended their hype schedule a while ago. They used to have a card trickle tied to tons of events, ensuring we knew a card or two about every set we were going into. Then they stopped that and moved to focusing on one product at a time for a short window. All of these are better than the original 'nothing until release day' but still, getting commander spoilers 6 months before commander to get people excited is a smart thing to do.

There is ZERO chance that a foil sheet of a set that's not about to be promoted was intentional.

Eh, they still haven't admitted to Maro leaking Mirrorpool

I don't know, man, if you're a super-spy naughty leaker it seems like maybe you don't choose to photograph that sheet in such a way that no one sees the Planeswalker in full or significant new mechanics on any of the cards.

This looks like exactly the sort of leak I would intentionally make if I wanted to get the sort of hardcore players who go to MythicSpoiler (et. all) excited without actually giving away most of the stuff the marketing and design teams want to go ham on in articles and official spoiler days. (As opposed to say, the first three Hour of Devastation leaks.)

You put a taste out there and make the product actually real to people and have them actually start talking and caring about it outside of the hypothetical. It works. It's smart.

Are we really tinfoil hatting? Are we doing this?

It's not "tinfoil hatting". It's their cards, they can spoil them how they want and how they feel generates them the most positive and pervasive press. No one's accusing them of doing anything nefarious or unethical.

This kind of stuff softens me a tiny bit to the idea of an un-set, though I think I'd still definitely land on just trying "safer" versions of those types of things in an actual black-bordered supplemental set.

HK-47

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Saying they wanted to spoil a bunch of rares for a set that isn't even the next release takes some real lack of critical thinking.

there is zero upside to wizards to having Ixalan cards leak when what they really want people to be excited and talking about is the set that comes out in three weeks and has previews starting tomorrow

They have literally NEVER leaked anything in the game's history in this manner at all and relatively few times any leaks of this nature has happened has resulted in litigation.

They have many avenues and opportunities to spoil cards, this is not one of them. They do tons of market research to get feedback on what people want to see.

To think otherwise in this instance is pretty foolish.

Some cards:

Ashes of the Abhorrent
1W
Enchantment
Players can't cast spells from graveyards or active abilities of cards in graveyards.
Whenever a creature dies, you gain 1 life.

Deeproot Champion
1G
Creature - Merfolk Shaman
Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Deeproot Champion.

Vraska's corruption
2BB
Instant
Exile target creature or planeswalker, you gain 2 life

Bishop of Rebirth
3WW
Creature - Vampire Cleric
Vigilance
Whenever ~ attacks, you may return target creature card with CMC 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Goring Ceratops 5WW
Creature — Dinosaur (Rare)
Double strike
Whenever Goring Ceratops attacks, other creatures you control gain double strike until end of turn.
?/?

Green Merfolk! White Vampires! Dinosaurs! Raid is back!

FOR FUCK'S SAKE

based on a conversation in this thread i designed a pirate set that had treasure and raid as two of its primary mechanics

Also wow, this is the worst leak since... I guess right now since OGW, but if pics keep coming out it'll be the worst since NPH.

"Old Growth Dryads" is some garbage tier naming.

Disagree. "Old Growth" is a great descriptor to tell you something about the Dryads and where they live without a lot of words or effort.

This seems a huge color pie bend:

Hostage Taker 2UB
Creature — Human Pirate (Rare)
When Hostage Taker enters the battlefield, exile target artifact or creature until Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast that spell.
2/1(might be 3)

UB creature that can deal with artifacts.

It's more than that. It loops infinitely with itself for an arbitrary number of ETB and leaves the battlefield triggers. I'm suddenly much more wary of this supposed leak.

Edit: Even more than that. As formatted it forces a draw if there are no other valid targets when it ETB. There is no way this is real.

It's a variation on the Evil Twin format that probably picked up artifact targeting as continued fallout from Kaladesh.

Damn, so either we have a master-class faker out there who can conjure up dozens of unique art pieces out of thin air, or WotC development crapped the bed again. Either way is bad news but I guess the latter is more likely

I refuse to believe even recent WotC R&D is that messed up. This is the kind of thing a rules person looks at for 10 seconds and then points out what happens.

Basically, you're 10-20 months ahead of Wizards. Are we sure you're not a secret employee?

Also, boy at those leaks, you'd think they'd call a plumber or something

unless someone can produce high-quality art that is consistent with other magic cards and that no one has seen before in such quantity, this ain't fake

These are obviously real, but yeah that card might be a missed line errata like Marath. Might be opponent's control.
