David Cage says Detroit has nothing to say, not overtly political.

No reason to look for subtext if he's saying it's not meant to be there.
I'm glad it's just about androids and humans, with no allegories.

It's about slavery and racism and robots rebelling against their oppressors.

A common central theme to just about every sci-fi with robots rising against their oppressors.

I'm really tired of this shit in games. If you have nothing to say why the fuck would I want to pay attention? Grow some balls and take a stance on political issues instead of fence sitting.
Because it's David Cage's creation, not your's. You are absolutely free to not care about the game, but Cage isn't obligated to make the game "political." And hell, if he doesn't feel strongly about the potential political nature involved, I'm GLAD he's not trying to force it - that would just end up reckless.

MUnited83

For you.
Your entire game is story-focused with the central point being how you choose to approaches the decisions that are presented to you, and yet your game "has nothing to say"? Bruh all you did was further confirming how much of a crappy writer you are.

lol that's a pretty fucking cowardly statement to make in regards to your game about slavery, and casting this dude as your lead:
jesse-williams-bet-awards-acceptance-speech-quotes-sit-down

But yeah, totally not political. I get that he doesn't wanna scare away the "fingers-in-ears" crowd, but... yeah no. Fuck that. Cage may be a hack writer, but atleast have some fucking guts to stand by your product.

The statement "I have nothing to say" by itself reads hilariously sad to me.

Anyway, a little bit less excited for the game now.

This is a baffling statement to make. It's like he's actively trying to make his game sound less interesting.

um

who doesnt advocate for civil rights?
A lot of people. Are you new to the internet?

And this is some bullshit. So the guy wrote a story with such obvious parallels and didn't draw from them at all?

So it's going to have no heart or meaning then and is going to be a steaming turd written by a guy who doesn't understand the story he is writing.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the huge amount of gamers losing their shit when things are political that say a message they don't like. That in itself isn't political at all.
Yep this. He's saying this to stop gamers getting upset about politics in his game. A shameless attempt to appeal to idiots

I don't get the issue. I like the show "humans" and this game looks like an interactive version of humans season 2. Not once in the show or game did I ever think "I feel this is too political"

Like "last light" is a different story and even confirmed by the developer. Different situation.

I dunno you kinda set your game in detroit and have your trailer include a group of repressed minorities trying to free their "people" from slavery, coming into contact with police culminating in some of them shot and killed unjustly.

you're free to state otherwise but it's really hard to wiggle out of the politics of that one.

Wait

I can't tell if this is sarcasm

Is this a serious post?

Yeah it's serious, I actually liked what Cage said here.

It's about slavery and racism and robots rebelling against their oppressors.

A common central theme to just about every sci-fi with robots rising against their oppressors.

I know it is, and I'm glad it's just that, and not some kind of parallel to slavery, just like Cage said.

Any writer worth a damn doesn't care if they piss some people off. That comes with anything worthwhile. Trying to appease everyone is how boring, bland bullshit is made.

It's a pretty pervasive view in the game industry, and seemingly on the game industry. They want to get credit for "asking questions" without saying anything.

It might be for the best, as I do not trust Cage's ability to write with a purpose on anything resembling sensitive subject matter. But the willful insistence at jumping into a discussion only to declare your intention not to take part doesn't make you look smart, it makes you look cowardly.

Exactly this. Especially in 2017.

I don't really blame them. I imagine there's some wariness about a French studio making an overtly political game about America, the climate being as bad as it is. There are a lot of things that, in America, have a great deal more weight or require more care in handling than elsewhere, or that foreigners just cannot relate to (gun culture's a big one). Their perspective will be coloured by their own national (and broader European) politics, too.

Plus, y'know, triple-A games need to sell to a lot of people. Can't be alienating any part of your potential audience.

MUnited83

For you.
Why every thing must be political though? Every one free to make his/her own story....
The game is about robo-slavery and the robots upring against their masters. This is absolutely political no matter any way you slice it, so seems really dumb of Cage to say otherwise.

Lmao

Wants to keep the alt rightys feeling okay about picking up his game.

Doesn't want to get tagged as an sjw

Ding Ding. I seriously doubt Jesse Williams would accept to have him in a role in this game if this isn't political. A story about slavery with his face and voice as a main character and then the script doesn't have anything to say? I don't believe it.

David Cage is just a coward that doesn't want to lose any sales.

I believe him and I'm not a fan of his games.

People over analize too much and jump into conclusion too quickly.

It's a game about a slave robot uprising. How is that not a clear politely story, and certainly relevant today.

And no way Jesse Williams is in this game if it doesn't have big political statements to make.

David Cage said:
“I don’t want the game to have something to say, because I don’t see myself delivering a message to people,

I submit this quote to be in the running for most vacuous comment ever to be made by a game dev.

Yes, if you enjoy something you are not allowed to criticise it ever

Certainly, but there's venomous criticism in here already. People take it too far.

Plus, if you don't like David Cage's game, why are you stalking a David Cage game thread? (not you specifically).

Didn't he say last year that the story is unique because the androids are the good guys for once.

Fucking what

David Cage should make something campy like Until Dawn instead of trying to trick people into thinking he's some kind of deep artist. Because he's not. He's a hack.

He's asked a day after political rifts inspire an attack on a congressmen and their staffers, in a time of relative political unease, if his game is political, and he says no.

Shocker.

Great detective work Gaf.

Not sure that's a smart thing to say about your story driven game.
I also like that Nier told basically the same story but with actual gameplay.

I'm glad he's not trying to said anything reckless about this. This is a very sensitive issues.

These themes have been existing in so many media and long period of times.

Slavery have existed as old as mankind. Long time ago people make a slave out of their own people.

That's just trying too hard to be good with God and the Devil.
Also, a game asking the player questions is a game that says something.

I cant blame him for not saying anything publicly. Do that and you are just asking to have your every word dissected, every sentence questioned and ultimately chewed out by someone who thinks you went too far or not far enough. Everything you say ends up being quoted out of context anyway.

Just fade in the background and let the game talk. Who needs the rest of the headache.

Wake up. This is 2017.

This seems particularly cowardly in a year with Wolfenstein and Far Cry 5. Picking this subject in that city right around the 50 year anniversary of the Detroit riots.
