Bungie are upsetting the fan base with Destiny 2

I think you missed the 2 most important things:

Guided Games as a way to matchmake for all activities when in reality it's limited to Normal modes which are superseded by Hard when released

No Crossplay/Crosssave

When did they mention that?

Didn't we just go over this with the stranger stuff? I wouldn't care if Destiny 2 was an entirely new story altogether as long as it's good. The best part of it was how it played and the worst part was the story. I would rather they move forward and do something better than build on the shaky story they had in the first one.

I'm really not concerned about the other stuff either. You won't even be able to do most of those things at launch anyways, even if they were available. Except maybe rumble, but we don't even know how they're rotating the game modes or whatever this time around.

I think that's the vibe Bungie gives off anyway and therefore don't have a problem seeing it clearly stated, unlike their fluffy community managers.
I speak for myself, but I'd rather be upset at Luke because I disagree with something he said over being upset at Deej because he didn't say anything at all. Dude is alarmingly absent for someone who is supposed to be in charge of communication with the community, and even when he does show up he'll manage to type 2000 words and say absolutely dick all.

Ever since the Destiny 2 reveal event, Bungie have had an open line of communication and clarification with the community and it's really refreshing. Some of their decisions going forward with the franchise have ranged from odd to nonsensical but at least they're telling us flat out now.

Destiny, the internet´s favorite thing to shit on for 3 years.

Destiny, also one of the most successful games of this generation.

And one of the best.

Not knowing where the story will go at some point seems entirely normal to me.

But that´s what you get for an honest reply - another one of these threads.

Only PR-speak going forward.

Very annoying.

Very boring.

Yea, but similar to Destiny, they had the mysterious Forerunners which they never expanded on and left a mystery, pretty much like The Darkness, lol. When 343 shed light on them, they lost all of their mystique and cool factor. I don't think Bungie really knew what the Forerunners were either.

Forerunners never needed to be explained. They left behind relics that were worshiped by the main antagonist, and beyond discovering the purpose of those relics, there's enough motivation there to write stories from. Literally the minute they were explained, shit went downhill fast.

Add me to the ranks of people who invested time and now feel disappointed at Bungies direction.

What's crazy is the first Halo book was released when Halo came out. They had so much direction back then. Destiny was supposed to present an even larger story and here we are....lost.

The Desitny boss design is one of the most puzzling design choices I've seen.

Vex have big harpies, big minotaurs and big hydras
Cabal have bigger Cabal
Fallen have big vandals and big servitors
Hive have big knights and big ogres

And in the first game, they pretty much did the exact same attack that the normal sized version did. Bare minimum, they ought to have different behaviors, but it'd be nice if they weren't just upscaled versions for a change.
Preach. Did they show off other bosses or missions at E3 that didn't fall into this? Was super disappointing to see the strike they showed off a month or so ago used the same bullet sponge mechanic as D1

That completely changes the whole exchange and only proves it's important to go to the source and not rely on what the OP chose to highlight.

This is an entirely different answer that makes sense for how they're approaching storytelling and lore in D2 and from now on in the series.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty important to highlight. It was fresh in my memory because I was just listening to it on the way into work this morning. I thought it was a pretty fair, honest answer that also showed how they're trying to be better.

The darkness was nothing?

Fuck off, fuck off so hard.

This is some Lost level bullshit.

Well no, what it was originally planned to be was scrapped and then they didn't manage to write anything worthwhile in the meantime. So they're giving it a rest to 1. preserve some of its remaining mystery and 2. write something more compelling.

Well they ditched the original writer's narrative, right? This isn't a huge surprise.

The "story", if you could call it that, from vanilla Destiny was so uninteresting and vague that I find it difficult to imagine anyone would feel really attached or engaged with it. If one was, great, I am glad they enjoyed it, but I get the feeling that most of us never bothered to read what was essentially an unlockable wiki online for narrative.

All that said, and I'm going to be a hypocrite but oh well it's my opinion, I would have liked to see some real closure to the stranger's arc. Like maybe she was Cayde-6's sister or something, just looking out for him. Or maybe she was from the future. It felt like a raw deal wrapping up the story and getting some gun that was weak as all hell and fini.

He did not say that.

He said that D2 will not necessarily move this aspect of the story forward.

Think of D2 as the "dark middle chapter" and expect the bigger plot points to be left hanging until D3 brings all of it to a conclusion.

I still think Destiny 1 was amazing and very forward thinking. It's just a shame Destiny 2 is resting on that formula and not using the advantage of being current gen only to push things further. Here's hoping Anthem's massive open world and free flight gives them that kick up the butt they need to push Destiny 3 into something more immediately impressive.

Regarding the Darkness... I think we all knew they had no clue. Same way we all knew Bioware didn't have a clue what the Reapers were in Mass 1 - made even more obvious when they told us to deal with a new enemy they pulled out of their asses in Mass 2 while they continued trying to figure it out. Looks like Bungie are following exactly the same routine as Bioware did, but here's hoping they can work out an impressive reveal for the third game.

Schreier: Tell me the truth. Is it because none of you have any idea what “The Darkness” actually means?
Damn, man. Schreier is a straight shooter.

Can't say I blame Bungie, though. Staten's gone, and he's the only one who would've known.

They had no idea what the Darkness was, they were to fill in the holes later on. Excactly like Lost.

Shit story telling and world building

The darkness is just a catch all? What the fuck was the heart of darkness at the end of the D1 campaign then? Our imagination? I swear they need to hire a PR firm because they can't help but put their collective feet in their collective mouths. If I was Activision I'd be a bit worried since Bungie doesn't seem to really know what to do with this franchise. Might be time for a hostile takeover.

This E3 has been like a race to see who could produce the most negative PR.

Also, no rumble and no private matches? Is there a logical excuse for their omission or is it more of the usual making it up as they go?

edit

Game will sell loads dispite the complaints. Don't like it don't buy it.

Fuck off with that comment. I'm the consumer. I support their studio by buying their games. If they are acting incompetent I have every right to call them out on it.

You are acting like Bungie is the victim here, which are far from the truth. The internet and players is free to criticize their bad decisions, it is neither annoying nor boring because they did, fuck, up, a lot of things. What do you expect? Expect the media and press to forgive them and move on? If it is one of the most successful games this gen, then its sequel getting much more attention and higher demand in quality is not a surprise, and if they fuck things up, they get called out, there is nothing wrong with that.

The story in Destiny is as important as the story in porn.

Glad they have lessened focus on it in Destiny 2 they-

I'm shocked with all the manpower they had in this with his underwhelming it seems.

Looks more like an expansion than a sequel

A lot of that manpower is there just to make sure that a max of microtransactions are ready day one.

This will be a watershed in terms of wallet draining microtransactions

Nah man, I'm with you about being excited for it.

I consider myself a fan.

I'm not upset.

I actually find a lot of this news encouraging, as in they're adding story and realized some of the shortcomings of the first game (still love the first game despite this though).

I mean, Bungie's track record with storytelling in Destiny wasn't exactly stellar, I'm not surprised they're just dumping every unresolved plotpoint for the sequel.

4v4 pvp, no rumble mode and no dedicated servers were the big disappointments for me. I'll still buy it day one, but I doubt I'll spend as much time playing destiny 2 as I did the first one.

This is exactly why stories in games are a second thought. By this logic, why bother with a story at all? A story is obviously going to change when told over a number of years but simply adding plot points with no end goal is absurd.

The cancer that is Activision
Bad Guy Activision once again, is it? The blame lies squarely on Bungie. They overpromised and underdelivered with D1 and they signed an agreement with Acti which they couldn't keep to. Activision appear to have been quite lenient with Bungie.

I have high hopes for D2 and can't wait for a new raid.

Also, the reason why PS4 owners aren't okay with exclusive stuff isn't because we care about other console players. lol nonono. The reason why we don't want gear, weapons, strikes, and maps to be exclusive is because that stuff will never be sold by Xür (or whomever is going to be the exotic vendor will be this time), and the maps and strikes will never be part of a Trials (the peak of competitive PvP in Destiny) rotation and any weekly strikes/nightfall will never feature the exclusive missions. It sucks.

I waited anxiously for Destiny 1, and even if it was disappointing when compared with some of its promises, I believe that it was an interesting and worthy experience. It seems to me, based on conversations with my gaming circles, that most of the people who spoke against it didn´t even finish the Vault of Glass, for example.

What has been shown of Destiny 2 doesn´t interest me at all. The graphics, the lore, the O´Donnell-less music, the Activision / Playstation marketing deals do show Bungie as a shell of its former, legendarily creative self IMHO.

That said, the list of reasonable demands listed by the OP aren´t stopping it from being hyped, bought and played extensively by the millions of those who already invested hundreds if not thousands of hours into the first, addicting but ultimately shallow game.

I'd love a game that plays like destiny with a story on par or better than Witcher 3.

Someone please make that game.

Don't just take the OP's quote. Listen to the interview or see my post here.

There was way more to the answer from Smith.

Agreed, this is squarely on Bungie. This reeks of either bad (or no) leadership at the studio.

I'm a lot more fussed that they think the Exo stranger story is complete.

The traveler is light and gives guardian light...the darkness was always a catch all for the enemies coming to try and consume/take the light.

The Exo stranger appears several times in the game, has powers no-one else has, and is potentially speaking to someone in the past/future....and she just gives us an average gun and disappears forever!?

Thanks. It still doesn't instill confidence though. The Darkness has specifically been stated as a nemesis to the Traveler. Not as a catch all term but the actual term for it. This just seems like them being wishy washy because they didn't like where it was taking them with the first game so they're just re-imagining it. I have a hard time believing they didn't know who the Darkness was.

I think that was Bioware with Mass effect, at least the Star Wars quote iirc.

Haha my bad I got them confused. I think it's the fans that overrate Mass Effect insanely.

Come on guys...

Don't confuse optimism for instruction.

The actual quote from the link above is:
...we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars

There is nothing wrong with this statement. It's just an optimistic statement about where they hope their product lands on their fans interest levels.

I want it to be loved as much as Star Wars IS NOT You will love it as much as Star Wars.

But, tha's like just your opinion man.

Destiny gets shit on alot but I think the majority would agree the gameplay is fantastic. The game simply isn't for you.
Fighting the same enemies over and over again gets to you. The gameplay can't change that.

The thing is Bungie has built a game that has become so fun with the community that they know they will want to play so they do whatever bullshit they want even if it upsets the fanbase, that is my opinion.

I am 100% sure that part of the conversation of PC coming out later, regardless of delay or not, was that they could make the fan buy the game twice and they celebrated that. I am 100% they had a similar conversation to that. I have no proof of course it is a baseless argument, but I can't think it is not true if they screw with the fanbase that much.

And I'm sure they'll bring up some bs excuse as to why:
- PC comes out later
- No shared accounts
- Vault space
- XOX not performing better

And they'll use the exclusivity deal as an excuse too.

And we'll all still be there because the game is fun. It is this kind of developer that lords stuff over peoples heads and even makes jokes about it that I sometimes detest...but their game is so fun.
