No lies detected. Don't care for Kevin Kelly either. He looks and sounds like he should be narrating an episode of Barney instead of a pro wrestling match.

Every once in a while I'll get curious and check out the English commentary but I stick with the Japanese commentary 99% of the time. Even if you can't understand most of what they're saying they get so hype and it adds a lot more to it than any of the English commentators they've used.

Best way to watch NJPW is with New Legacy Inc if they do a live commentary. Only done the last Wrestle Kingdom and Dominion though.

also after watching the Japanese commentary for awhile you can start to pick up a little here and there, they use quite a few English words especially when they call out the moves and finishers.

That is very true.

I would even say when you get somewhat accustomed to Japanese wrestling even the shows with no commentary you get so much from what is just happening you don't need commentary.

It is like in Stardom, promos and stuff were translated way more often than NJPW but even without commentary everything that was happening was immediately understandable. I think the same can be said for the Road to.. and such shows that often don't have any commentary. It is all pretty clear.

I do think it could take a little getting used for people who are accustomed to more recent wrestling but it really isn't that inaccessible.

when there is no commentary its just the same as going to a live show, you're more invested with whats going on in the ring, that's also why it's great to listen to the Japanese commentary because you're not really focused on what they're saying due to language barrier so you can easily just tune it out as background noise.

They really aren't that shit to be honest. I think the dissonance comes from the level of in ring quality compared to the quality of the commentary to some degree. But it serves its purpose. People coming into NJPW will probably appreciate it, people watching for years will probably be pissed. As it goes.

I await the day you dip into NJPW.

It's not like there's a lot of options out there, tbh. I think Kelly's fine as a play-by-play guy for the most part, and Callis is improving. It's not great yet, but for some of the big matches I think they've done a good job.

The translation shit puts me off the most. Not doubting the wrestling is far better.

That is kinda what I am trying to say. Callis was rough when he first started and was obviously not that knowledgeable about NJPW but he has come a long way in a short amount of time. I thought they did pretty well during Dominion.

I can totally understand people not liking their commentary but I think comparing them to Cole and co being fed shit from Vince is a bit much.

1) There are very few good English commentators that are up for grabs. That's just the sad state of things.

2) Rome wasn't built in a day. These things take time.

Kelly's like background noise to me. He isn't distractingly bad but also doesn't really add anything. By modern wrestling standard that's like a B+.

I can understand that. It is hard to really describe why it isn't as apparently important.

I kind of feel like for me, I see people talking about Dragon Gate, AJPW, BJW and people who wreslte for them etc etc quite often and I see a match or a show or two here and there but find it inaccessible to some degree (insofar as being emotionally invested). I've been watching NJPW for years and years now and kind of know what to expect from what I am watching, the stories of the various wrestlers etc. Saying that, I do think NJPW is more accessible than the smaller puro promotions, but still. I think maybe people who have only ever watched WWE/WCW might feel similarly when it comes to NJPW. There is quite a bit to take in and understand before it clicks and the language barrier can make that harder too. It is just a shame, for me, because so many people are upset with promotions like WWE (and post their hate so much) that promotions like NJPW completely address.

I'm not sure if that is just convoluted shit or not, but that is something that has been on my mind a bit lately when it comes to introducing people to NJPW. Let alone joshi or stuff like DDT (which I really think people should check out despite the oddness).

Saiki's something of a fitness celebrity so they depend on her a lot for exposure, but luckily she is taking to it very well and could be proper good in a year's time. She's got a great babyface personality.

Personally, I think Yuu is the future, she's tremendous.
