Taiko no Tatsujin |Series Discussion Thread| A Donderful World

i was hoping to have 3DS3 DLC info to post by now but

please watch this scene from yuusha yoshihiko

Did you look this up now or had this prepped? Haha. Interesting. I'm not sure if that's a reliable source, but it's interesting.

i've either wondered myself or been asked at some point lol

i can't comment on the validity of the whole idea, it could all be an urban legend as far as i know. at the very least i can say taiko players have a very negative reaction to people playing with drumsticks.

Quoting a really old post because I've been using that image for various things for a while but always forgot to ask where it actually came from??

Anyway, this is a super nice thread, Taiko's easily taken up more playtime on my handhelds throughout the past generation or two than any other game.

My pro-controller has lost sensitivity in the top right, most of the time a hit doesn't registerer. I'm pretty gutted as I have no idea how to go about getting it repaired and think they are no longer available to buy a replacement, not that I'd want to drop another £200.

Anyone else had issues?

Hopefully they will announce a second vita Taiko next year.

And wow, the PS3 port of Taiko Arcade (inside Yakuza 5) is terribad. Framerate is super unstable and hit detection is awful.

Jeez, that's really disappointing. Sorry to hear about that.

Hori seems to offer some repair services on their products, so that may be worth looking into. There's gonna be a fee associated, but it's obviously significantly less than getting a new one. And I'd personally be far too scared to open it up and try to handle it myself (though if you really feel so inclined, it seems there's some videos around detailing the process of opening it up).

terrible indeed

holy shit lol. those guys really do a hell of a job. last i checked in, i think i even saw they got custom DLC working? that's pretty nuts. that prospect alone is tempting me to get homebrew up and running, because it'd be leagues better than any taiko sim.

I feel like whether or not that happens depends on how quickly they're gonna get Switch Taiko out. They might feel like a Switch Taiko would be too much of the same audience as 3DS3, and think they need some more time to refresh. In that case, I think a Vita2 could be plausible, because I don't see them going a year without ANY Taiko game.

also god tell me about it. 6 charts total felt way too stingy (literal taiko demos had more), and the engine itself has messed up animations, missing effects, and just feels bad to play. i'm way more nitpicky than most because i'm pretty involved with the series, but it just felt a lot messier than it should've been, even as a minigame. i'm super glad it was there, and i LOVE the characters speaking in don-chan's place, but i do have to admit i was kinda disappointed.

Dear Taiko Drum Masters: Is the Vita game worth it knowing I won't be getting any of the DLC? Where would you rank it with the 3DS games i.e. should I get the newest 3DS game instead?

There are no Taiko games this holiday right? Kinda odd. Though with 3DS just having had a game; WiiU on its death bed etc. I guess it makes sense.

I can't see them diving straight in with Taiko Switch early next year though.

Anyway, Taiko V Version is having a budget re-release on December 1st, if anyone didn't already know.

Speaking solely in terms of on-cart content, I prefer V Version over any of the 3DS games, yeah. Not to mention I just think the Vita is ergonomically better for Taiko over the 3DS, though you do miss out on touch controls which some people prefer. If it's V Version on-cart content versus 3DS 2 or 3 with DLC, then it's kinda tough to say, especially considering the latest one's DLC support is ongoing. My general advice is just to see which tracklist speaks to you more.

Late reply but my controller is even worse now, hugely disappointing and I'm in UK so no chance to realistically send it back until I go to Japan so I think I'll attempt a home repair... I had a look around but couldn't find any videos or pages, do you have a link?

Is Kare Kano-Kanon on any of the 3DS versions? There definitely not in the DLC but are they unlockable? I have all three of the 3DS games and the DS games (it's in Mechha DS but the 3DS versions are so much better)

That's such a huge bummer :/ I really wish there was an actual market for high-quality 3rd party Taiko controllers. It sucks only having one (very expensive) option, where service and repairs are super inaccessible outside of Japan. I guess that sadly comes with the territory of the series not really having that much of an international playerbase.

I couldn't find any videos specifically regarding repairs (it's possible that not much can be done outside of replacement parts) but searching for, like, "太鼓 proコントローラー 改造" gets me some videos of people modding their Pro controllers that could serve as a guide to some extent I guess?

Huh, somehow it actually still hasn't been in a 3DS game yet. Weird.

Well mine... It was good for a while but then the right rim would hit randomly has right face. Now I'm having very poor sensitivity on the face and right rim is useless.

I didn't use the batchi that came with it, might have been fault if my own and not the product.

Are there still places to buy these, I might sell mine for spares but couldn't find a place to buy another.

Figure it's been long enough and there's enough news to put out a brief summary.

Just yesterday, mobile Taiko added a new Challenge Mode that lets you unlock 5 songs (4 Namco Originals and Natsu Matsuri) for permanent play for free. There's a limit on how much progress you can make towards unlocking every day, but once you unlock them, they're yours to play whenever. It says it lasts until February 1st, but it's not clear whether that means the mode totally ends then or they'll cycle in a new set of songs. Still, with newer mobile rhythm games and updates to older ones, like VOEZ and jubeat plus, offering more to play for free, it's really cool to see Taiko follow suit.

Yesterday was also the last arcade Taiko update of the year! Additions include a new Pokemon medley for a new Pokemon game (though I wish they went for more interesting song picks), a meme song for if you feel like only getting half your credit's value, and, uh, Excitebike sound effects. Why not. Orders for Taiko Yellow version, set for a March release, are also starting!

Oh and this isn't news since the last time I posted or anything but of course 3DS3 is keeping on with its monthly DLC. A real lot of anime songs in this game with yet another anime pack, but I guess that's to make up for no console version to get the latest anime OPs. Ura Ponpokorin is neat, though! Then the monthly free DLC is Picopico Ruin, an arrangement of 3DS2's Sacred Ruin by chiptune artist Prof.Sakamoto, and the poll winning revival, Fuun! Bachi Osensei is also available for purchase in a pack with its long version. edit: oops right after i posted this, january DLC

The price for yellow isn't as bad as I thought. That is the cab and everything? I guess I really could buy a cab one day.

Unfortunately that's just the upgrade kit (改造キット). A quick search for purchasing a Red version cab is giving me numbers around 500k-600k yen (though I can't say I know the validity of these numbers or the process of buying a cab). Then you'd probably also need to purchase some kind of subscription to Banapass, and... I'm certain it really adds up, lol.

Purchasing a non-online version for yourself is definitely feasible though, I'm sure there are plenty of privately-owned 1-14 cabs around. The big concern I'd have with that would be maintenance, though. I felt like when I was in Japan, I saw a good number of damaged or broken drums. I've definitely heard about some of the few machines in the West needing repairs pretty often too. Guess that's what happens when a game revolves around beating the hell out of a controller.

Seems like a bullshit price for the upgrade, then. Hmm... sounds like a pain in the ass to own one privately.

It is indeed a bullshit price! It's basically a subscription fee operators need to pay every 9 months, and I guess they justify charging so much by saying "hey, it's cheaper than a new arcade board would've been!". I have no idea if these upgrades would even be offered to privately-owned cabs.

But yeah, with songs constantly being added in free updates, version upgrades are basically a formality at this point, lol. It's not even like Bemani games where you get a UI overhaul and sometimes new features, it's just another song update and a new title screen. For how much Taiko has been trying to be more like Bemani in recent years, I wish they'd adopt the policy of putting more variety into aesthetics.

... then again, I guess the tradeoff of the arcade version not getting new visual assets is that the effort goes into the home releases instead. I can live with that, lol

I finished Don to Katsu no Jikuu Daibouken a few days ago with a guide but I can't find anything similar for Mystery Adventure. It seems doable without a translation but are there any puzzles that I should know of like the previous game?

Ummm lemme think, admittedly both campaigns sorta blend together in my mind lol.

I don't think there's any text-based puzzles like the Egypt one in 3DS2. There are some parts that aren't quite as linear and require searching around for objects in one area, but I think that through fumbling around you should be able to get through even those just fine.

If you ever get stuck you can feel free to post too.

edit: oh also taiko confirmed for switch which was obvious but whatever. region free is dope, i just need confirmation of multiple accounts per system so i can get DLC and stuff

Someone pointed out via here - http://www.gamasutra.com/view/press...s_of_and_Taiko_Drum_Master_in_Development.php

That apparently since Bamco US mentioned Taiko Drum Master is in development that they are looking to release it in English...

We'll see!

Yeah, I saw word going around that it was confirmed for localization but I'm not really buying it. Xenoverse 2 is listed on the release schedule for the US, while Taiko totally isn't. As I read it, the headline only confirms Xenoverse 2 for the US, and just states that the rest are in development.

It'd be neat, and we got one miracle localization in the form of Puyo Puyo Tetris, but I just don't see it happening. Still, I'm really glad that way more people will get to check out the console releases from here on. It's been nice to see a good deal of excitement regarding region-free Taiko.

Almost finished every song in Meccha but still no Kare Kano Kanon :( also, anyone know what I have to do for Oni in this one?

Haven't played much of the Mystery Adventure since I last posted but how does the party system work exactly? You can have up to nine members but what do the three pillars means?

Wow, I got back on Wii Taiko after a long time playing 3DS only and I've gotten really good. I've getting perfects on my first attempts on most songs on Hard and am starting to complete the more difficult Oni stuff. I can be way quicker with the Classic Controller than on the 3DS and it's making it really tempting to buy a grip and see if I can hit L and R faster which seems to be my biggest problem playing on the 3DS.

Yeah, I can definitely speak to the extent that grips help. You're not gonna automatically get way better or anything, but you can definitely notice a difference in execution. I ended up buying both a 3DS and Vita grip for the sake of Taiko, lol. Unfortunately I have an old-style 3DS XL, so getting a decent grip for it ended up being a bit... pricier than I had hoped. Doesn't quite bring it to the level of Classic Controller Pro, but it's better for sure.

Also, brief general news dump. Taiko livestream today gave us some preliminary info on Yellow version, like a host of new unlockable Namco Originals and some new licenses, including Calamari Inkantation from Splatoon with an Inkling costume. Probably more Yellow version license announcements to come later this month. And then 3DS3 got its February DLC yesterday, so be sure to pick up the free track.

I was just THIS close to getting perfect on Kare Kano Kanon on Hard but broke my combo at the very end. Don't know why but this song in particular always trips me up but particularly the end with the multiple triple tap blue notes I just can't do consistently.

Also got the new 3DS dlc, though I've heard it's a bit of a letdown.

Bump because... well, I love Taiko. I'll have a Wii U soon and I'm excited to finally have HD Taiko even though the Wii games looked really good despite being 640x480. Mostly excited to see how the gamepad compares to the CC Pro, I haven't held one since 2014 and I only had one for a brief period. Are the tracklists similar in size to Chogoukaban or smaller? And how much crossover is there with the 3DS tracklists?

lol, things are a bit quiet at the moment with a new arcade release imminent and not really much news on the console front. I'm hoping that once Taiko Switch is formally announced, having a new region free game on the horizon will bring about some renewed interest

When it comes to the Wii U games, the Gamepad works okay for them, but due to the shape and the positioning of the buttons, I still stick to CC Pro. Only the second game, Tokumori, has 100+ songs on-disc, but they all exceed the song count of any Wii game when DLC is factored in. The issue is... all the DLC was initially released for free, but has been converted to paid DLC since then (aside from the most recent pack for the most recent game, which is free for another month or two). And even worse, some of it's just been totally delisted and is unavailable now. It's really a major downside of post-release support, as cool as it may be for early purchasers.

I don't know the exact amount of crossover with the 3DS tracklists, but there's some, I guess. In particular I'd say most of the crossover is with DLC from PSP DX and 3DS2, honestly. But there's always the popular songs that find their way onto every platform too, so those will naturally overlap.

Bumping this for the handful of people who care

I've definitely been getting better. Still haven't perfected Kare Karo Kanon, but haven't been working on it too much. I'm trying to perfect every song on Meccha on hard and it's starting to become down to the toughest songs, and a couple a feel like I just can't do yet.

My biggest accomplishment recently is doing Op 10 no 4 on Hard with only two misses - it's a marathon and very intense but I think with enough plays I could very well perfect the hardest Hard song on Taiko 3DS2. Additionally, I'm so close to getting Night and Day down too. Only one miss, and this one seems very doable. Most of my breaks happen by a slight lapse or the rare but still sometimes present color clash (where I'll hit red instead of blue and vice versa, I struggled with this really bad in the beginning when I was first trying to get good at these games) the toughest songs seem to be ones with quick transitions between reds and blues - for example, have a three succession of notes, but, have a blue on the end after the first two reds and combine this multiple times, I almost always fuck up on one of them. Fast successive notes of the same color I can do well, and why I can play a song like Op 10 No 4 so well despite it being a very difficult song overall.

I have gotten a Wii U, but most of my time has still been spent on the 3DS. I really dislike how the Wii U games display the rankings in the bottom left denoting your completion for every difficulty level. I much preferred showing the ranking above each song for whatever difficulty you currently had selected, it made keeping track of what to do next much easier. The gamepad is nice but it's almost too comfortable - I'll often overhit blues due to how the triggers are placed - so yeah, CC Pro is my go too. I'd love to play off TV with headphones plugged in but can't go through one song without the screen breaking for a split second and screwing my combo up. I can't even use headphones plugged into the gamepad while using the TV which really sucks since I'm in an apartment now.

Is there anyway to purchase dlc for taiko no tatsujin on vita using a japanese account, and play them on an american one?

Yeah, sorry, I don't mean to be neglectful of this thread or anything, I'm just trying not to engage in too much masturbatory posting lol. Always happy to discuss stuff, though.

Anyways, what's striking to me right now about the series is just how close it seemed to have grown with Nintendo when it comes to collaboration songs. I think the number of Nintendo tracks in AC has just about doubled in the past 6 months? It's a huge asset that no other active arcade music game series has atm, so it's understandable that they'd want to strengthen that connection. Just makes me wonder if anything's in store for the future. I kinda feel like a Nintendo-themed Taiko in the vein of Must Songs might be a good opportunity to test out the brand in the West again...

Either way, those collaborations seem to have drummed up some excitement, so hopefully they do actually end up making it into the Switch game. This is gonna be the longest wait between new CS Taiko games ever, assuming it's a winter release. There's a lot to catch up on, and a lot I'm curious about regarding how they'll handle the console/handheld fusion aspect.

Once you get ddk, kkd, dkk, kdd down, you should be able to start making headway into modern 7* Onis. Streams of those patterns are gonna be tricky if you're not alternating hands, so if you're not already doing that, you're gonna want to convert sooner rather than later. It's a pain in the ass, but it's basically prerequisite for tackling higher level stuff.

And yeah, for apartment living I just went ahead and bought an audio extension cable to hook into my monitor's headphone jack. I'd imagine there's probably converters for audio out ports too? Either way, I forgot you can't listen to GamePad audio while playing on TV, that's a pain.

Is there anyway to purchase dlc for taiko no tatsujin on vita using a japanese account, and play them on an american one?

Like Aizo said, not officially. No idea if current-level Vita hacking would offer a workaround, though. I know folks figured out how to get it on PSTV but that's the extent of my knowledge.

I hit Everest today. I've been trying to perfect this for awhile now and finally did it today. I really wish I could get good at Oni, but the note charts are just insane. Does anyone play it with buttons because I can't find many tips on how to improve while using buttons. I'm kinda stagnated at Hard right now. Song is brutal, a ton of hand swapping and tricky patterns and a tempo change in the middle. Feels good. Only classical song I don't have done is the medley. It has one section in the beginning I can never get through perfect.

I'm surprised there is finally another Taiko game coming to a Sony console. Crazy, crazy, crazy. Track list is pretty boring so far. I hope it's a large one. After track lists in games like Project Diva Future Tone, I expect more for my money.

We'll see when the story properly breaks from Famitsu in about a day. If the initial reveal doesn't advertise over 100 songs... then the base tracklist is probably gonna be around 80. What they've shown so far actually seems like a pretty sizable amount for a first reveal, but the issue is... you got your Natsu Matsuri, you got your Cruel Angel's Thesis, you got... Memeshikute and Let it Go still clawing on for some reason??? Why is that here when there's two Disney Animation songs still arcade exclusive? I'm just baffled that this is the longest gap between CS Taikos ever and there's barely anything new so far. The initial reveal is usually where they cover CS debuts and exclusives in the Anime, J-Pop and Variety genres, but there's so little here. I guess if Switch Taiko is really dropping before March, these two are gonna be released awfully close together, so maybe this is a product of the songlist being split between the two?

Anyways, on the good side, the PSN features sound great, comparing scores with friends is a loooong time coming. Full-on Donder Hiroba support would've been cool but I know that's not gonna happen, so this is the next best thing. And thank god we're finally getting a USB Taiko controller. No idea if Sony/Nintendo would allow it, but it'd be aces if it worked with both the PS4 and Switch games. If not, at the very least it'll work great with sims, which is awesome. And hopefully because it's Hori, it's significantly better quality than the Wii one.

But yeah, exciting stuff. I was absolutely not expecting a new Sony Taiko when we've been anticipating any word about Switch Taiko for half a year now lol.

Congrats!

It's hard to really offer any definite advice, unfortunately. If you're already hand switching, that's pretty much the most you can do in the "technique" department. My biggest period of improvement really just came from playing lots and lots and lots of different songs. Playing Taiko well is all about familiarity with note patterns, which means both reading them and executing them. And of course, that's all only gained by playing.

I think it's helpful to find a low BPM song that, for the most part, consists of patterns you can handle, but has a few trickier ones you're not as good at interspersed. For instance, Natsu Matsuri is almost all same-color clusters, but has a few kkd patterns thrown in as well, so I think it's helpful for practicing kkd's.

Yeah it is, for sure. I figured I'd update - I have gotten better on Oni, but nowhere close to perfecting 7 star songs yet - however, before it was I couldn't complete most of them. Now I can complete most of them. Even some 8 star ones are doable but I stumble through them. Saitama 2000 is helping me with Oni quite a bit, even though I'm aware it's the easiest 2000 song by far and I had it perfect on Hard within a few tries. I can do the entire first part flawless (that k note in the middle string tripped me but I've gotten that down) but it's got a ton of ddkdd after that which I can sometimes make it through but other times I break and start to do ass. On Hard if I break, even on the most difficult stuff I can recover, but Oni I sometimes ruin the entire song if I fuck up once. 3DS3 seems to have way harder Hard songs than the older games. I've been mostly playing 3DS2 and DS2, with some Wii U 3 thrown in every now and then and even from 2014 to 2016 it seems to have gotten near 7 star Oni level difficult, just without the huge note chains. I have perfected some of them but Outride a Crisis is kicking my ass. I can get like 600 in and break. I've noticed overall there are songs that go way over 3 minutes now and it might be that too that's tripping me up with 3DS3.

I want a Switch, but Taiko PS4 is making me want that too. I don't own either but honestly unless the online support in PS4 is really good I'll skip it and get the Switch version, which I really hope isn't regressed like 3DS1 was. I'm a little scared it will be and it won't be worth playing.

3DS3's Game Music section is particularly marathon-y for whatever reason. Outride a Crisis, Rising and Ghosts 'n Goblins (which uses a shorter cut in crossbeats) all hover around 3 minutes, which is pretty nuts. It's definitely normal to get tripped up by songs that just keep going on like that.

It's tough to really comment on Switch vs. PS4 for Taiko right now given the total lack of info on the former and the tiny amount we know about the latter. First entries on new platforms are often rough, but most recently V Version ended up mostly avoiding that. If I had to comment now, PS4's currently revealed tracklist has me thinking that, at least in the license department, most of the goods are being saved for Switch, but who knows when it comes to NOs and DLC. But we don't know if Switch will have a single player campaign or comparable online features or even support a Tatacon soooo... yeah, who can say

oh and of course other games in each's library should be factored in lol
