New Steam UI coming soon

Just want an improved detail library view. It's weird that detail view lacks info like if the game has cloud save support or metacritic score that list view has. Unless I'm an idiot.

There's a huge amount of dissonance between different sections of the client and it's ugly and overly masculine, a product of the bygone era of PC gaming pandering almost exclusively to Exxxtreme Gamerz.

What?

Lol, I agree with outdated and perhaps a lack of refinement, in addiiton to not showing enough information... but overly masculine product of a bygone era?

Don't ever change GAF.

I don't even know what default steam looks like anymore, all I remember it being super ugly.
Been using #air for steam for years.
Hope custom skins remain an option.

UI isn't all looks, it's to do with usability as well.

A good UI needs both—and the two aren't as separated as you might assume.

They've done studies; show different groups of people the same UI with different skins, and the group who sees the prettier skin will say it's easier to use.

I've been trying to organize my steam library by genre and it's ridiculous how stupid annoying it is to have more than a few categories in your library.

I've been talking shit about Steam UI for years now. It sucks. I'm glad they're doing something about it.

Steam UI was never made to handle the number of friends/games/categories/events that happen now. Will be nice to see how they refresh things especially the non store elements.

I feel like this has been imminent for a year or so. I can't believe it's taken this long to update it, hoping for something cleaner than the UI we have now.

So I guess they're sticking with badges. I hate them.

One thing I wish I could do is to just hide all that crap. Achievements, too.

There's a program called Depressurizer that will automatically sort your Steam games by genre if you'd like. You can also sort by other options. Saw it in another thread last night and it is awesome. Even if it's not perfect it is a hell of a lot better than nothing.

Let me rename and reorder my games, client side. I'm tired of series being out of order or some games having random caps and symbols while their sequels or prequels do not. I know you can alter some text files to rename them, but it isn't permanent and still doesn't fix the ordering issue.

Doubt it'll happen, but I wish they'd add a few extra specific gaming features in the update. Specifically a Rivatuner-like framerate capper right in the in-game Steam menu so that you can easily work with it to adjust a game to the level of performance (FPS) you want without leaving the game window.

I appreciate the recommendation! I actually ran into Depressurizer a couple months ago and gave it one shot but was dissatisfied with the results and didn't bother to try it again, I really should have because now I'm so blasted deep into this there's no point in turning back.

I wish they would remove news articles from the game launch page. I have gotten spoilers about games I am currently playing multiple times because of it.

I'm pretty nervous about this. I want things to remain minimal. Usability could definitely use an overall improvement, but I don't want to end up with a bunch of bloat (Like you see in some of those mockups that were posted).

Definitely.

is crazy to think that Steam really feels almost the same as it was when it launched years and years ago. I know its not, but its not much different. Its loooooooong overdue for a UI change.

Having an event calendar seems pretty cool. Good way to check out games you haven't played in a while or check out for the first time. Hopefully it's easy to use for both devs and the end user.

about time!

i know there are skins but most i've tried aren't done well at all and really it's just papering over the cracks. the entire steam client needs rebuilt from the ground up.

Just use .pngs instead of lossy .jpegs for the banner pics (no way am I replacing them all myself) & I'd be happy. Hate list view.

I've felt for awhile that Steam needed to revamp their achievements. It's weird that PlayStation and Xbox's achievements feel.. more.. important in a way? Simply by how they're designed, and how you're notified when you get them. Steam achievements deserve to have that same feel to them.

The stuff they're doing with VR achievements giving you interactive items and mementos for your SteamVR Home is really cool. Not at all relevent to 2D gaming, but they're doing some great stuff with evolving achievement rewards in VR.

What I would like added is in the Steam overlay, have a section showing which of your friends are playing the same game.

Quite an odd inconvenience to alt tab or look at my friends list just to see.

The "feel" is whatever to me because they're ultimately unimportant regardless of platform, but at the very least there needs to be a way to get a comprehensive view of your achievements through Steam itself. Right now, I can have a profile showcase that displays how many games I've completed, but that's it. There's no way to click on it to view a list of which games they actually are. I shouldn't have to use a third-party site like AStats to get that info.

I use a skin and I'm overall ok with the UI right now... I like pc mode more than big picture though.

What attributes to this: 1) no overarching level/gamerscore system and a list per title. 2) a pretty tame popup that doesn't have any sound. This more minimalist approach to achievements is probably done deliberately to not make them into as big of a deal as they are on Xbox/PS.

I just want to use the current desktop client but have the game automatically launch with the BPM overlay.

I PC game console style form the couch, and the desktop client is perfectly usable, but I like the BPM notifications in game.
